Sorry but I have to heavily disagree that the Ğ letter ain't pronounced. It adds a tone behind a vowel (this is also the reason why no Turkish word starts with an Ğ !!!). The vowel (a,e,o,i,u) before the Ğ defines the lip posture for the Ğ, while the Ğ sound is produced where the normal G is produced, at the far back of your tongue. The difference between a G and Ğ is that for a G the airflow is momentary closed with the tongue while for the Ğ sound you just narrow the airflow similar to the Y letter. That's why Ğ is also often compared to Y because the airflow is tightened in a similar way, just not with the tip but with far back of your tongue as said. PS: Don't mind my nickname, I'm a 100% native Turkish speaker. I live in Germany and barely had any Turkish lessons at school (like 5-6 years) compared to those living in Turkey. It's kinda funny and sad at the same time that I have to explain to you what the Ğ sound really is, while you try to teach the people here... ^^ I would kindly ask for a new and better video on this topic. I just recently discovered dozens of videos struggling to explain the Ğ letter to non native speakers and imho they all fail very hard at this. It ain't magic nor is it difficult if you know how it works.

Ok for those who still didn't get it, and come from a non-turkic west asian country or a country that uses Cyrillic alphabet: Ğ used to have a sound: soft q(or gh), but the sound lost its usage in modern turkish. In persian, arabic, and ottoman turkish alphabets that sound(gh) is/was represented by غ , but ğ in modern day turkish is more like ع in those alphabets(Note that ع has no equivalents in Latin alphabet (except of course Ğğ in turkish) but its equivalents in Cyrillic are Ъъ and Ьь (with the latter being softer and/or shorter than the former) and also in central asian Cyrillic alphabets such as tajik or kazakh, the sound gh( غ ) is represented by Ғ)

Ğ is not 3. (Sorry, I don't have an Arabic keyboard enabled in my phone) 3 does exist in some Turkish accents but only in the beginning of words beginning with phonemic vowels. Ğ can make no sound at all, a "y" sound, or a "v" sound depending on the vowels around it. When it is not followed by any vowel,it lengthens the preceding vowel

Thank you for this video, it's very helpful. Actually there are Wikipedia articles that insist that the situation is a bit more complex. They say that the pronunciation of this letter in some words depends upon the speaker, the surrounding vowels, and cite exceptions like eğlence ('fun') [ejlænˈdʒe] and proper names like Olğun [oɫˈɡun]. I also have a friend in Azerbaijan who insists that only non-native Turkish speakers can believe that this letter in Turkish is not pronounced at all, that it is pronounced but very mildly even between a vowel and a consonant mixing itself with the preceding prolonged vowel. I also realize that many Azerbaijani people, both in Azerbaijan and Iran, learn Turkish through very popular Turkish soap operas/TV series. So I wonder if the actors in them tend to be old-fashioned in preserving this letter in their stage pronunciation thus making impression upon the Azerbaijanian audience that this sound is still pronounced in Turkey... There may be also differences between Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, and Antalya dialects in that request as well.

Question: how was the word yoğurt pronounced back in the 16th century when the Arabic spelling was still used? By comparison, in English the now silent gh in words like light used to be pronounced and the vowel sound was a short i. Once upon a time the word was pronounced more like the modern Dutch word: licht. In Old English the first person singular pronoun ic was pronounced like the modern Dutch ik. Then by Middle English it had changed to i like the i in machine and it wasn't until modern English that the pronoun I became the diphthong ai like in the word like.

I guess I need to watch one of your other videos to find out why you're pronouncing "r" three different ways? Also (English tip): The way you're pronouncing the word "vowel" sounds like the English word "wall" or maybe "wowl", and that's not how we say it. If it weren't for the context in which you're using the word, I wouldn't be able to recognize it as "vowel". Try pronouncing the letter "f" while humming. That's how we pronounce the letter "v" in English. I read that you actually have a similar sound in Turkish; it's like how you pronounce "v" in a word like "kartvizit" (and not like the "v" in "tavuk", which is pronounced like the English "w"). Also, the word "vowel" should have two distinct syllables (with the stronger emphasis on the first syllable), like "VOW-el" (or, in Turkish phonics, I guess it would be more like "vağvel", but with the "v" from "kartvizit" at the starting of the first syllable, and the "v" from "tavuk" at the beginning of the second syllable).

As a Syrian arab with a Syrian Turkmen mother after learning Turkish I realised that the letter “ğ” is the same as "غ" in Arabic but when the Turks switched from Arabic to Latin alphabet there was no such thing as "غ" it’s an impossible sound for Latin speakers to make so they made it silent. You can realise when Syrian Turkmens and Iraqi Turkmens speak Turkish they pronounce “ğ” as “غ".

I like your channel and your very nice videos. This one, however, is not completely correct. Try these words: "Diğer" (other), "Ağız" (mouth) or"yoğurt" (yoghurt). These are very basic Turkish words that don't fit in this explanation. There are many others: Kağıt. yağız, ağıt, değil, eğil, yoğun. "Ğ" doesn't lengthen the previous sound in any of these words. The reality is, "ğ" is really hard to teach to a non-native speaker. It's similar to the throat sounds that exist in French, like when they say "Bordeaux". But in Turkish, it's extremely subtle that you can barely hear it as a listener. But a native speaker just naturally brings the voice down to the throat for a very brief moment, which may or may not be heard from the outside.
