Mike: For what it is worth, I bought the Amazon version. I'm clearly no Bill Pentz, so the technicalities of air flow elude me. However, I know how to use a basic anemometer and checked the CFMs before and after installation (adjusting the size of the opening being measured from the original 4" to 4.75" on the metal bellmouth). Essentially no difference in CFMs when holding the meter in the same relationship to the opening each time. But when using the bellmouth while sanding now, you can literally see the vortex created by it - which I did not see before. And, most importantly, it seems to suck in the sawdust from a much wider area than without the bellmouth. So a bit healthier of an atmosphere while sanding. Anyway, I'm sold on the concept! Thanks for bringing this issue to our attention.

Thanks for validating the results! Looks like the commercial version is a good choice.

This project is now on my to-do list! Having been around aeronautics and aviation most of my life, the boundary layer info on how it works is perfectly reasonable. The same or similar shapes can often be found on aircraft.

Nice job, Mike. I need to add this to my project list.

Thanks, Mike. Saved it so I can make one later for my lathe, and one for the bandsaw extra hose.😅

Whilst I have no data I am very pleased with my own design, Mike, reducing smoothly from 4" (102mm ) to 67mm PVC terminal pipework with a collection hood measuring 220x150mm x80mm deep ( a strengthened 2 litre ice cream box). Velocity with this geometry is greatly increased and visible dust collection very effective. The hood can be tilted 3D over the rim of most of my bowls or close along spindles, leaving just the irritation of motor fan noise. I wonder what I am losing. Thanks. Bernard.

I guess there is a certain amount of engineering on these things to get close to perfection. Sometimes close is good enough.

OMG Mike - as you've done so many times in the past - perfect timing ! My DC setup is now very noisy (new vacuum) and i think a Velocity Stack is the way to go. My mech engineer son might be able to help in the design so ... Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike

Neat idea Mike. Can you show how the DC hose is connected/supported behind the lathe? Love your videos.

I used a bungee cord to connect to the support in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWnHqoCKlq2kgZI

Most of the time, we try to avoid making funnels and are annoyed with ourselves when one happens. It will sure feel different doing one on purpose. Thanks.

I was impressed by your decision to eliminate the step where the bell mouth fits into the plastic pipe. Then I saw that it was to be fitted into a corrugated pipe, with possibly hundreds of larger steps, and I thought 'Why bother?'

Nice one Mike. I am currently using a black plastic hood attached to a 4" duct fitting hose. I will have to give this a try this spring. Going through some chemo treatment and it will be a bit before I want to venture into the shop Take care my friend Cheers Harold

@@MikePeaceWoodturning Have you done a test to see how big a bowl you can use the setup on and get decent dust removal? I have one of those formed plastic hoods, maybe 4 x 12 and it does not seem to get very much dust for a 4: unit from a 1 1.2 P Delta duct collection unit. I know watching Richard Raffan, he uses a 4" duct which is similar to what you have. Cheers Mike Harold

Thanks, Mike...what a great improvement. I'll have to turn one of those for my dust collector. QUESTION: Where can I buy the flexhose?

Gee - I've made a number of bowls that turned out to be funnels. That's what we call a mistake. This is different!
