You guys are lucky, by the early to mid fifties and the United States virtually all portable record players used either one power tube while using the motor to drop the rest of the 120v or else if it did have a rectifier, power tube and preamp tube it was a transformerless design using series string filaments like a 35Z5 rectifier, 50L6 power tube and maybe a 12SL7 for the preamp. I suppose that was due to the higher line voltage. Most of the radios by the 50s add Siri string filaments and transformerless designs

It seems the speaker works well for guitar. I briefly tested the speaker on mine out from a jack lead from my laptops headphones output to the speaker and obviously being the headphones output, it was'nt very loud but at least confirmed that the 70 year old speaker was working.

I bought one of these off of fleabay a couple of weeks back. My one is a slightly earlier version that does not have the red power light, but apart from that looks the same. There is hardly any noise coming out of the speaker, so I need to change the 4 paper capacitors for probably film capacitors and if the audio is still not working then it is probably a faulty output transformer. I plan on turning it into a guitar amp. The capacitors I need to change - from the booklet photos = C1 Paper 0.15uf 125v C2 Paper 12,000pf 125v C3 Paper 12,000pf 400v C5 Paper 4,700pf 1,000v
