You'd be amazed at all that you can get from roasting a couple of chickens. Even one chicken! Not only can you enjoy supper and then maybe some leftovers the next day, you can get several pints of delicious, nutritious bone broth AND more pints of chicken soup to have on your pantry shelf.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!! The day after Thanksgiving, I will be doing this with most of the leftover turkey. I turn canned chicken & turkey into soups, pot pies, shepherd's pie, casseroles, stir fry, make a gravy from broth I serve it over rice, mashed potatoes, or over toast (open face sandwiches). Amounts to small to can, I put in freezer to add to jar pasta sauces that I doctor up. I absolutely love canned meats and poultry on my shelf for quick meals. When I get sick I always crave Mrs. Grass's chicken noodle soup my grandmother would give me. Back then there was a little blue "chicken egg" in box that contained the bouillion! Now I just open jar of chicken in broth, boil a small amt of noodles in it and I'm satisfied without going through a whole ordeal. I do can pints for those days.

I have never canned turkey before but I've already told my mom that whatever we have left over after a couple of days of meals she ought to let me know so I can can it up for future use. 😁 I probably won't put much in the freezer because I just don't have much room in there.

Enjoyed the video... loved that you brought up cross contamination multiple times, I'm very cautious about food. As far as the bone broth, was that set on high or low? My favorite thing to do with left over chicken is "chicken and dumplings". Have a great Thanksgiving!

I put my slow cooker on low and just let it go overnight. I get to it whenever I get to it the next day. Sometimes it cooks for about 10 hours, sometimes longer. The main thing I'm looking for is for those bones to get crumbly. It can certainly be put on high if you want to cook it for less time, but I've never done that with this. Sometimes I also pour the leavings from the pan into the slow cooker, but in the end, you don't want a bunch of fat in the broth or soup you can up because it can cause a faulty seal. If I do that, I usually let the broth come down in temperature then put it in the fridge when it's done and skim off the fat before canning.

Hi Sara, I can imagine your kitchen smelt wonderful when you were roasting the chicken. You certainly use every part of the chicken which is lovely to see. I have never heard it called bone broth before... here in Australia if we are getting the flavour out of meat bones, we know it as chicken stock or if you are using beef then beef stock. Chicken stock is so versatile and can be used in soups, stews and casseroles, risotto's etc...etc..., and so handy to have some in your pantry. Sara, it was lovely having a look at your well stocked pantry, and you have such a variety of canned produce. For me it is so weird seeing chicken at room temperature and is safe to eat due to the canning process. God's blessings to you and your family. Love and hugs from Aussie Gloria! 🥰🐨🦘🌻💖

Yes! I honestly think that a roasting chicken is one of the nicest aromas you'll find in a kitchen! Absolutely delicious! We do make chicken stock here, as well, but for stock, there's not as much of a focus on cooking the bones until they're crumbly. At least not that I know of! God's blessings to you, as well! We have our American Thanksgiving here this Thursday so I will wish you a Happy Thanksgiving even though it's not an Aussie holiday! ❤🙏 Really, it's just about giving thanks to God for all of our blessings anyway, and we can do that any day!
