It’s so interesting to me how turn-based combat has been around for such a long time and yet there are still new directions and innovations to explore. This combat sounds amazing and I’m really looking forward to it but I can’t help but wonder how has nobody tried any of the stuff before?
@OmarO_7214 ай бұрын
@@alexdeeter5789 Well technically this stuff isn’t new. Super Mario RPG I believe was the first turn based game to use timed attacks. Final Fantasy VIII also has a similar mechanic with Squall, where you can get a manual critical hit by pressing a button at the right moment. And of course Lost Odyssey had the little attack ring. Yakuza: Like A Dragon, is also notable for allowing characters to parry enemy attacks during the enemy’s turn. Though I’m not sure if it’s the first one to introduce this. But yeah it seems this game is definitely expanding these mechanics! 🔥
@Zeik564 ай бұрын
@@OmarO_721 Timed attacks are nothing new, but it does seem to have its own unique quirks more on the dodging and parrying side of the equation. QTE's in RPGs tend to lean heavily into the offensive side while defensive mechanics are often an afterthought. Apparently, it's possible to do a 100% no damage run if you are good enough at the dodge/parry mechanics, which I can't think of any other turn-based RPG that does that. Usually it just reduces damage or situationally negates damage. So it seems like there's a big emphasis on that in this game.
@aarons.23234 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's not really new with Super Mario RPG, Legend of Dragon, Shadow Hearts, and Lost Odyssey out there. But it definitely feels like it's been inspired by more than that, even Soulsborne games. It's still an interesting mix and will be wonderful if they can pull it off well.
@Swillo4 ай бұрын
This has been done decades ago. Also final fantasy has FFX-2 and FFXIII which pushed action mixed with turn based to the next level and we also have xenoblade chronicles series as well which has incredible timed attack and action elements. Remeber back when Ghost of Tsushima came out and a lot of Japanese devs were saying "I love this, but we should have made this"? Basically lamenting that they hadn't taken the steps to make a similar game. That's more or less how I feel about this game. It's so clear that the devs on this "understand the assignment" to such a degree that they're going above and beyond to make something that is such a brilliant refinement of things we've seen in the genre for years, but never all in one place. The fact that a Japanese company didn't make this absolutely blows my mind. A previous commenter said "you don't have to be mexican or in mexico to make good mexican food" and they're right, but it's still always a surprise when someone outside the culture you'd normally associate with a thing does that thing in such a way that even the folks who are known for have to nod their heads in respect.

I don't know how I feel about being able to dodge or block every attack in the game. Because from what I see, the only "skill" required is to press one button. Feels like it'll trivialize the entire game and really undermine most boss or climactic battles, and render the character builds almost unimportant. That being said, for those who complain or are afraid of the FF9 remake going the way of FF7R, this could be a solid way to update the old turn based combat

I will say that I hope it’s more challenging than it looks so far in marketing material. I feel like in every footage they’ve shown, the party EASILY parries and dodges every attack and that concerns me. Even the boss attacks that hit the entire party all got dodged or parried by all three members so it’s not like each member dodges individually, the dodge button applies to the whole party. I like the more interactive aspect but if every battle can be tackled by simply dodging then it will get boring soon for me. The devs even said that you can do a zero hit run of the entire game. One of the reasons why I love turn based combat so much is figuring out how to beat tough opponents KNOWING I will get hit by devastating attacks so I need to prepare for those attacks. If it’s a poison-based attack, stock up on some potions or equip armor that lowers the chance of getting poisoned. If it’s super strong, make sure a character has the strongest armor that can survive the attack so they can revive the other party members. Things like that which make battles more like a chess game rather than checkers. Knowing there’s gonna be some sacrifices to be made, knowing that if you make a wrong move that can cost you. If you make a wrong move in this game and the boss counter with a devastating attack but you can simply dodge or parry the attack, then it makes your wrong move not be a big deal at all. There won’t be a risk of having a “bad turn” because you can easily recover by dodging the counter. Think back to the Seymour fights in FFX and how you’d have to strategize to make sure you survive his strongest attacks and are able to fight back. There won’t be the risk of that “oh sh*t, I shouldn’t have done that” moments because if you make the wrong move you can just avoid the damage and try again without any consequences. If the #1 strategy for these battles is to simply time the dodge button accordingly then it’s less turn based and more Dark Souls; just waiting for the attack to dodge and strike back. I really hope it’s more challenging and battles require more than just dodging and parrying otherwise this will be the biggest disappointing game ever for me after all this hype and potential.
@kyosan234 ай бұрын
I hope that the dodge/parry mechanic doesn't make the game too easy. Enemies should hit like a tank for missed dodges/parries to at least balance that out. I love a challenging RPG! and I hope this is one of those games.

Very excited for this, but I'm not sure how I feel about the dodging and parrying parts yet. Could the game be way too easy if you can just dodge everything and not take damage? I feel like taking hits is a big part of turn based combat, as you then have to strategize around that
