I got something to add to this. A lot of people see marshalling as a bad thing and I'm not sure why. You know you will have to marshal, its part of racing, so just get out there and do it because if you had to hold your race for a marshal you probably wouldn't be very happy. While you are out there, use it as time for scouting. You have to be out there anyways, so make the best out of that time ON the track. Don't just look for the "easy" spots where you can be lazy. During your race, make mental notes on zones that you aren't doing so good with. When you are up to marshal, got to THOSE zones and marshal. Then you can focus on how each and every car is taking that zone and study their lines, especially if the race after yours is a group of faster drivers. Who knows, you might see something in the track from that perspective at ground level that you didn't notice during a track walk or from the drivers stand. You may even get hints as to how the track is developing so you can be more prepared for your next race. Use that time as an advantage, you payed for it anyways so why duck out of it?

Same goes for practice. We all know that guy that will run tank after tank during practice and then go immediately back to the pits to "wrench" on his car instead of marshal for the others for the time he had on the track. Don't be that guy. I'm sure the reason he didn't find that tenth of a second isn't going to be found by going over his car immediately. If you study the lines people are taking and seeing how the track and cars are reacting to each other, it can make all the difference in the world to your practice sessions.

Exactly use it as a chance to really get a close up of the track. My advice is that if you are having issues with a certain corner or stretch of the track go marshall that turn or section to see how others get through that section or turn.

Great advice. I would also recommend that you wear some sort of gloves. I wear the cheap black mechanic gloves from harbor freight. Believe me they save your hands from burns, cuts, etc. Definitely worth the $6-$7 dollars.

Agreed! I got cut by an outdrive once. I aways try to use gloves after that. Helps keep dirt & oil off your hands too.

Awesome video. Great topic. I am a little different and enjoyed marshaling. And the best advice I got was marshal the way you would want to be marshaled. Thanks for making that point on a video. It can just kill the sport when you have middle aged dudes on the stand screaming at marshals, and then they go out and do a terrible job marshaling.

Why people don’t want to turn marshall baffles me! You can learn so much…of what to do & what not to do while you are racing. You can see what the track is doing. And also you can see & hear when the “fast guys” are in & out of the throttle, etc. So much you can learn but some people just don’t get it!

Hey Adam! Great and a definite necessary video. One would think it would be self explanatory, but no. Nothing is ever that simple! Oh, btw, you’ve currently got one of my engines, and I know you’re awaiting the other, I’m getting it out to ya! Thanks!

Race Directors should be aware and let racers know when there is a situation on the track on the track.

The race directors to watch all the cars on the whole track. It’s impossible to watch every corner and every car at the same time which is why we have marshals. Some Marshalls job to watch their portion of the track not the race Director

This is such an important subject. Everybody knows (and complains) about the difficulty of having enough turn marshals but it's rare for anyone to talk about turn marshal best practices. Things I see that I think are problematic: turn marshals flipping over cars one-handed without making sure the car points in the right direction, improving a car's position by dropping the car on the other side of a jump or corner, putting a car down in the racing line causing other cars to slow or swerve, and the big one, turn marshals following the race and taking their eyes off their corner/section. Of course there are others, and some gray areas about whether turn marshals should attempt to repair or restart a car, but the sooner we have consistent, clear expectations for turn marshals, the faster the situation will improve. Also, on the subject of adding race officials to enforce rules, there needs to be some sort of penalty for drivers who harass turn marshals or drivers who are on throttle while the car is in a turn marshal's hands.

sense of urgency and car placement are the biggest. throw the car towards the downside of a jump instead of the face. small things like that are appreciated!

I had some of my best races in a competition we have where there are only 3 marshals (is a 3 drivers race kinda like a showdown after the proper race) and it's one per each driver and the marshal has to pick a spot in the track so you can do way less mistakes and pushing hard really makes you feel on the edge, imo that's the best way of racing RC cars cause you pay for your mistakes hard and can't blame the marshals cause the only one you have is specifically for you (the marshals don't have to pick up cars that are not theirs, they could but no one does obviously)

Race directors need to start calling out drivers names for marshaling duties and if there not out there dock a lap.

Hey Adam, off subject question here, can you steer me in the right direction for gearing of my MBX8Te Truggy (Spur and Tekno Traktion Drive kit clutch bell)? Currently have 46 T Spur and 13 T Tekno clutch bell and with turning the center diff 180 it doesn’t line up at all. Thanks for the Help.

I am often shocked at the verbal abuse drivers on the stand spew over a marshal not doing a good enough job in their minds. It gets really bad. I have had some bad marshaling in some of my races too, but hey it happens and is part of it. Like I say to those who get mad at marshals, “ guess you shouldn’t have crashed” Not to mention most of the time they don’t marshal any better themselves.

Although I’ve never actually raced, I’m fairly sure they’re the guys who flip over flipped cars. Hence why he said where to grab it and to be a bit more nimble as to avoid getting nailed by an oncoming racer. If you’ve never watched a race, there are plenty of them on here and you’ll see the guys doing that.
