So glad to see you have had chance to review these English designed and built speakers. I would love to own a pair of ATC speakers. Their attention to detail in the manufacturing is really inspiring. They take the copper wire for winding the speaker coils and run it through a bespoke machine to slightly flatten it so that the wound coils have a higher density of copper to reduce the air gaps between the coils. The domed mid-range speakers seem to give them such an advantage in reproducing the realistic midrange and spectacular vocals. I wonder if, once converted to active speakers, they will be even more impressive at low listening volumes. You are such a lucky lad having those on loan. It must be like Santa has visited you early Merry Christmas

Haha, got the ATC bug Terry. After trying some Wilsons and Magicos at home I visited ATC with a friend who wanted to hear some 40's and ended up buying a pair of active 50 Towers myself! I had them less than a year when a pair of active 150 anniversary towers came up second hand and I couldn't resist. I run them off of an Audio Research valve pre which adds spaciousness and a bit of warmth. Job done. Atc's sound nothing like the vision I once had in my head, I thought they were going to be detailed and clinical being studio monitors but that couldn't be further from the truth.

Thank you and well done for this wonderful and accurate review of the ATC system. I agree with every word. I am a lucky and a very happy owner of the special ATC EL 150 Actives (with the P6 amplifier and the ATC tweeter). In fact, I have been listening to ATC active speakers since 1998 and the actives do sound better than the passive counterparts, due to better integration and matching of drivers and electronics. I will be looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the active ATCs.

Great review. About 25 years ago I went to a hifi show in Manchester at the Plaza I think. But Manta Acoustics I think they were called had a room and to this day I’ve never heard anything like it. It was incredible 🤯 They had so big ATC speakers with enough Naim to rival the factory. They’d got them on that much isolation the speakers were closer to the ceiling than my ears. Camouflage netting everywhere, neon lights etc Not your usual room but man it was something else I’d love to know the music they’d been playing as it’s stuck in my head now but it rocked like nothing else So fast and transparent.

The criminally under-used soft-dome midrange.... I have Wharfedale EVO 4.2's and their "special sauce" is definitely the way they pair the dome mid with the AMT tweeter. I know soft-dome mids can start to distort at very high volume with hard rock music (but really, it has to be LOUD), but for 99.9% of listening...they are fabulous.

The atc scm50 sound better triamped, as there is more of everything, better detail, dynamics, slam and control, but with a smoother and calmer delivery at the same time. The 50asl has 200 watts just for the bass alone, then 100 watts for mids, 50 watts for the treble, and because they are active, they don't consume the same amount of ultimate power needed that passive versions do. Driving the 50 passives with just 200 watts for all 3 drive units watts does not go that far in a big 3 way passive crossover loudspeaker like the 50 passives have. They would sound far better with 3 p1 power amplifiers than with just the one p2 driving the whole 3 drive units, which all af this just perfect sense. If you bought the passive 50's and 3 atc power amps to control the drive units properly for loud levels, they would end up been a more expensive outlay than a pair of the 50 active super linear. It would come down to what you actually hear and perceive as better sound quality, as to what sounds better in the end, triamped passive or active 3 way.

Out of interest, what preamplifiers did you try with the SCM50's? I reckon an EAR valve pre, balanced connected to the P2 could work well. Also, for those with a slimmer available budget, the ATC SCM19 + ATC P1 combination is well worth considering; it definitely shares the ATC family sound. Personally, I prefer the sound of the 19 over the floor standing 40. There is something just right about a large ATC monitor on a sturdy stand positioned at the correct height.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem Yes, a few preamplifier reviews would be great. All things being equal, I still prefer a separate pre-power amplifier combination over an integrated one. @@PursuitPerfectSystem it sounds very metallic for a lack of a better word. It just sounds off. It sometimes even hurts my ears (low volume) Of course I do discount bad recordings. It’s almost like somethings missing somehow.

I like the looks of ATC! They look like serious speakers shall look in my opinion, not pretending to be anything else. The KEF's on the other hand....looks like shiny piece of modern kitchen appliances....or whatever, I don't know.....nah, not my taste at all..... +1 for the ATC!

Have ATC SCM 40 and 7........including ATC P1 They nead a high volumes to sing beautifull. In my opinione....not for apartmants.....because , neighbours will not stand such a volumes. For houses👌

The major problem with ATC speakers is that you simply cannot live inside them: they simply lack all basic amenities that make modern life what it is and I dare say, they're not even comfortable. I'm sorry to point this out but, nope, even council flats offer much better value. [Edit: At the time I wrote this I thought the price of ATC's systems was 2 or 3 times higher than they actually are.]

Mate, wait until you try the SCM150s. I’ve lived with a pair for 15 years, so.. They’re partnered with an ARC Ref 40 pre. I’d bypass the SCM 100s though.

Not alot of hardware for $16k passive or $27k active. Look a 9 inch driver can only go so loud at 50 hz. I dont see a horn enclosure, so, yeah..it is limited in air movement. I'll take the Legacy Calibre or Classics and save 10k.

does the word 'midfield' means anything to you?
@markceci98963 жыл бұрын
@@ssspppify I'm not sure what your point is. Do you want to discuss distance definitions, or are you implying that midfield listening makes for easier requirements? Regardless, they are super-expensive in my world. LOTS of competition at that price and much lower.
