I can’t believe Gene passed away only a few months after this. He looks pretty good here in the video. Regardless, he was taken too soon. So was David and Michael. Rest in peace to all 3 of them.

It was the last time all five original Byrds took the stage, I wonder why Crosby sat down and you can tell Michael Clarke was really soused, it was sad Gene passed on not to long after and then a couple years later Michael passed on and both died from alcohol related illnesses.

Well Jackson looked and sounded good. M Clarke, "Its not too late for pizza. I mean wth? Its only rock and roll, right?" lol He did quit drinking before he died but too much liver damage. He spent the rest of his time talking to young people about the perils of alcohol. Seems alot of people dont know that about him. I found that on utube sometime ago inan interview w him

Gene Clark was thrilled to be inducted, but he had been in a drug and alcohol spiral for decades, much of his stomach was removed as a consequence of the abuse, and he had just been diagnosed with throat cancer. Impoverished for years, he was suddenly flush with cash from royalty checks after Tom Petty covered one of Clark's songs on his debut solo album. Gene was doing copious amounts of crack and heroin at this point, closing in fast on a death wish forty years in the making. His story, and the story of the Byrds, is really depressing. Yet somehow Clark made haunting music, and he is a tragic legend in my eyes. And yes, he is dancing with real joy on that stage, even as he is dying.

@@christianhahn1299 you hit the nail on the head with that one. Agree with you, Gene Clark was living it up that night, sadly he was living it up each night for the majority of his life. Tragic

Also sadly, Gene’s throat cancer was never fully diagnosed with a biopsy and examination of tissue. He was told he had throat nodules. Terrified, Gene thought this meant he had cancer and did not pursue further treatment. He just continued to drink. He was so scared and could not handle the possibility of cancer. Whether those nodules were cancerous or not is really irrelevant, I guess, because he was told that if he continues to drink after so much of his stomach was removed, that he would die. If only he loved himself enough to stop and get help. He was a beautiful person and had such a tremendous gift.

Gene doesn't seem to mind Roger's singing lead on this. Then again perhaps he was relieved. I saw Gene's Byrds on Solid Gold in 1988 [ too young to grasp the fact that they really weren't the Byrds ] and Gene's voice was awfully weak. Mike probably should've kept his mouth shut [ Reportedly he had a few too many beforehand. ], but, well, this was his day in the sun and his last hurrah so to speak.

@@jasonsmith-bm1sv Yeah, I think seeing Gene's faux-Byrds on Solid Gold in 1987 or 1988 with Gene singing it convinced my teenage self that he was the original singer of it and that just stuck for some reason.
