My hearing aids were a grand total of $8,000 and I'm grateful for having my parents pay for my hearing costs cause if I was on my own I couldn't. Insurance companies see vision and dental far more important than hearing. I wish I had the option to switch vision cause I have absolutely no issues with vision. Contact lenses per box average $50-$100 vs hearing aids that are average $4700 per hearing aid. I'm paying extra for my insurance to cover something I may never need.

I’m 63 and have Re-Sound hearing aids. They are behind the ear hearing aids. I work in sales and was embarrassing myself not hearing customers questions or answers clearly. Also got sick of not being able to hear and understand my grandchildren. I never realized how poor my hearing was till I swallowed my pride and had myself tested. My Audiologists got me first class hearing aids for much less than stated in this report. He provides adjustments to the frequency band I’m having trouble with the most and infrequent repairs for the life of the aids all for $2600. Thank you Al Wilson you changed my life for the better.

My comment is on my own experience. In my fifties I was having trouble understanding speech. Volume wasn't a problem unlike it was for my mother who used a simple set of sound amplifying aids that cost around thirty dollars each. Seven years ago I bought a set of $5000 hearing aids. They helped some but not as much as I expected. Originally they were the molded in the ear model but I couldn't tolerate the pressure of the in the ear aid and had to go to the behind the ear. They were small and most people never even noticed I was wearing them. Over the years I had to have them each repaired at a cost of $700 dollars each. I finally replaced them with the latest model that has many more channels( rather like a sound graphic equalizer with more channels) and I actually hear clearer now. Downside is they are bluetooth and to get the ability to really use them for my phone or tv or simply to adjust the volume without taking them in to the store I have to purchase an iphone as they are made to work with one. Proper program and you can adjust sound fields and volume where ever you are. They will also work with android phones but not all functions will work. Here I am scrimping on prescriptions and yet manage to buy these expensive toys. But what's it worth to be able to carry on a conversation with your wife or friends. Sure the inexpensive sound amplifiers will work for many but for those who have trouble with separating sounds they don't offer much help. They still have us over a barrel in that some of us need hearing checks and aids that can be adjusted to only raise certain frequencies to hear better. It's high time the govt. reign in windfall profits from hearing aids but I guess it's like the drug industry where they actually pay our congressmen to allow them to keep on stealing from us all. Good luck and I hope you can find the money somehow to hear better.

Ziontrainism if it was as easy as handing someone hearing aids then the price would be much less. However, there are countless adjustments that usually take place as the patients adapts to their new hearing. All of those follow ups cost money. I have my practice arranged where the hearing aids are less than half the price and then the patients just pay for whatever services they may need as they go.

I have always bought my hearing aids from E-bay! i took my Hearing Test on line with my PC and Headphones. I bought a kit to mold my ear pieces. I sent my signed waiver, printed Hearing Test, and molds to a company in California who molded my 'in the ear" Seimens Digital Hearing Aids. That set cost me $1200. That was about 15 years ago. Since then my hearing has worsened and I needed more powerful hearing aids, so I went to "Behind The Ear" aids. Always staying with Digital. Always being on E-bay because of price. My latest set were Signia Fast P, CE, which cost me $85 each. Almost all E-bay hearing aid suppliers are overseas now which has lowered the price but also made shipping take longer. I have told this to many friends and older people but no one else I know does this! I also buy my eye glasses on line but that is another story.

They are the very best I've ever owned. The blue tooth option makes talking on the telephone easy. Also the option to adjust the volume with my phone is nice. There is a difference between needing amplification and needing clarity. Cheaper "hearing assists" like the Bose "Hearphone" and others sold by hearing centers like Miracle Ear are NOT for people who need clarification. Unfortunately, this means people may well be spending money on the wrong device with the DIY method of ordering online. I got my hearing checked by three places - to make sure they all agreed on the diagnosis. All the tests were comparable in results, so I knew I was on the right track. The ENT doctor didn't recommend hearing aids for clarity, only for amplification, when that in fact clarity was my problem. The other two hearing centers (like Miracle Ear) agreed I needed the hearing aid for clarity. In other words, the doctor was not astute in recommending the correct technology, and had I chosen not to get two more opinions, my hearing would have deteriorated to the point I may not have been able to stop the progression AND hear better, too. Be careful to self-diagnose, even if $5000 does seem ridiculous. It IS ridiculous, but you need to get what is appropriate or risk losing your hearing for good.

I was in a business dinner with about 20 people in a "high-end" restaurant. Literally, I could not hear the person across from me at the table and I do not have hearing loss. This happens almost every larger business dinner! I appreciated the comment from the Starkey rep who mentioned "hearing someone in a noisy restaurant," and I honestly don't think anyone but the restaurant can solve the way-too-oft issue of TERRIBLE sound management at these expensive establishments! Hardwood everywhere, closed rooms -- and the loudest males shouting so they can be heard. If I take my wife to dinner the ability to TALK with her is the main decision on where I go to spend my money!

I have the Bose Hearphones (approx $500) and they are in many ways superior to my almost $4000 (4yr old) hearing aids. When I just need to hear voice in a crowded environment the Bose Hearphones are about equal to my hearing aids. The draw back is that you can definitely see them. Where they really shine are places that you can cancel ambient noise and just use them like Bluetooth earbuds. They provide outstanding fidelity when listening to music. I use the hearing aids for times when I don't want my hearing aids to show, but in general the Bose Hearphones provide a better hearing experience. I have what the audiologist called "significant" hearing loss.

I do use Starkey for my hearing aids using the Micro tech Essentia brand. These are expensive, yes. I had to finance them, but to tell you the truth, they are not only a bit better than the cheap Amazon or non prescription ones you buy without the audiologists prescription and setting, but better by miles. I've tried several less expensive ones, but truth be told, they really cannot even come close to the quality of the ones I had to finance for. In the end, for what I needed, for what I do, and in spite of price, I couldnt be happier with the more expensive hearing aids over anything of less in price, less in quality, or without a prescription. I will however admit I was lucky to finance them, while others are not, so I think insurance carriers should be a bit more understanding to the actual need of a hearing aid and start to cover them for everyone in need....from one end of the financial spectrum to the other.

The KS-8 is their latest version. You get a money back guarantee if you're not happy. Clearly, if you need them they're a lifesaver. If you're hearing is bad you'll just start to feel isolated and embarrassed in social situations. Holiday parties use to be a problem for me. Not anymore. These babies were cheap at twice the price.

Costco has helped a lot of people that otherwise could not afford hearing aids, to join the conversation again.

There is a company, new to me, named Audicus, that sells hearing aids over the internet. The hearing exam is done over the computer with ear phones. I did mine with just my iPhone. Not even any ear buds. They have a membership plan that has 3 levels of cost. The basic level is $49.99 per ear, per month. That covers everything repairs, everything. Every 18 months you get a new pair!! I have the mid level, just received them. For $118.00 per month I have my hearing aides for both ears, plus all the needed equipment, & the charging case so I don’t have to pay for or mess with batteries. The charging case is an extra $10.00 a month per ear. Well worth it to me! The batteries are tiny, hard to handle, expensive & need to be changed every 2-3 days. At least they did on my old ones. These hearing aids are relatively affordable, you don’t have to take out a loan to get them and as the technology improves, you get a new pair every 18 months. No contract to be locked into. If you don’t like them or decide that you can’t afford them, just return them and you are done with it. How about that?!? I think it is a fantastic deal!!

No CC and all about Hearing aids... ? Also, those tests don't do much. You sit in a totally silent booth and focus on whatever they sound to you right? Real life isn't like that, it is loud... all the time. My hearing is going, badly, and I hear a lot less if there is a lot of noise bouncing around the room rather then when there is just one noise. Again, need CC
@jrstf
@jrstf 5 жыл бұрын
More than cost, I don't buy because I don't think the understanding of hearing loss has developed beyond the most primitave stages, I base that on the tests they give with a single pure tone in a quiet room. For me, it does give some useful information, but I really think it misses the most important characteristics of my hearing troubles.
@pstreicher
@pstreicher 5 жыл бұрын
Those tests will provide you a graph to show how much loss you have and at what frequencies. I have had it done twice now and a copy of each test in hand. The Audiologist was knowledgeable enough to explain to me a few things that I did not know. Firstly, as you get near to or crossover that 20% hearing loss line on the graph you begin to lose the ability to understand speech. Yes, that's right. Your brain cannot make out words at times. After hearing this I now find many times where I cannot understand even the simplest things said and have to ask for a repeat or two. This with hearing aids, still. I will say though that my hearing did improve remarkably enough to where I do not have to ask for people to repeat themselves nearly as often as I did. I also find that I am not quick to respond as it seems my brain is delayed in the understanding some speech and I have to pause to think about what was said. This happens more when people do not talk loud enough and are not directly facing me when talking. It is amazing to me to find so many people that do not speak up and they believe that you can hear their every word no matter what direction their lips are pointed. Okay, so I bought into the Seimen brand. Yes, they were overpriced but at least the first pair lasted over three and a half years. One finally just died so I had to order a second pair. I bought the second pair from an online store in Colorado. Here's what happened. I bought the second pair at the local hearing store and paid over $5,600. These were an upgraded version from what I had before but not much different. Only thing I know is the battery is twice as large and I get about a week out of a battery now. So, I took the local hearing store ones back. The manager asked me why I want to return them. I got a song and dance until I stated to her that since she is the manager she should be able to transact this return/refund. She turned and proceeded with the transaction. No more B.S. So, I called the online store in Colorado, so much more polite and helpful. They set me up with an appointment with an Audiologist not far from me and shipped the new aids all fully programmed with the test/script that I emailed to them. I picked up the new aids the next week and walked out of there a new man again. I have not had to go back for a follow up appointment, exam, whatever. Okay, so the other month I had a problem where I couldn't hear out of one of the aids. I called the online store and the phone was answered promptly and he began to tell me what to check. It was a build up of ceremen or earwax that I missed in my sometimes cleaning. I now look carefully at these before putting them on in the morning. Cleaning by swishing around in a capful of alcohol and using a little brush works well. I think I covered everything. I cannot mention store names here but you get the picture I hope. Oh, and the tinnitus, once you wear the aids for a bit they help to balance or block out the noise somehow. I rarely notice mine any longer but sitting here right now my ears are singing. You never know, there aint no cure for sure. We just have to deal with it the best we can. Professional aids can be programmed to help with a lot of these problems. Non-Programmable not so much. You are on your own and you might wish you had not spent the money on the cheap ones. Do your research, make some calls, ask questions. Did I tell you I have the bluetooth audio streamer with these aids? I plug in the transmitter to my stereo amp that the t.v. is connected with the left and right audio hookups and with the phone app I can put this streamer on around my neck and once it connects to the transmitter, I can hear t.v. so much better. I can leave the volume low where the wife likes it. Yeah, aint cheap but you can get another credit card to slap it on, right? ;)

@@jrstf Have you tried aids? If not you will never know for sure. Yes, some individuals may have hearing problems that aids cannot help but I only know of my tinnitus and some loss of speech understanding. Are these some of the important characteristics you are talking about?
@jrstf
@jrstf 5 жыл бұрын
@@pstreicher - I have not tried hearing aids. I know they would help sometimes. They measured a dip at 6KHz in my hearing, simple eq problem there, but even with the dip fixed I have trouble with speech in the presence of noise, that I know from eq'ing sound files on my computer and playing them back. I also have many other troubles, like distinguishing the acoustic guitar from the keyboard, and when the electric guitar spews its clipped vomit over the whole spectrum I tend to lose everything. I've been working on training my ears for 18 years, only a little improvement. Amplification will help sometimes, like in a group meeting, but it would be a big failure in a live band setting where it's already so loud as to cause pain in my ears (but apparently not in most people's). I hear much better with headphones or earbuds than listening to the room directly, so with bluetooth aids I could be piping the soundboard directly to my ears, totally oblivious to the sound in the room, bet that'd go over good with the audience! I don't like that only the vendor knows what the hearing aid is doing (or claims to know) and I can't adjust it myself. I do expect to get hearing aids some day, I will keep your online experience in mind, and that you can test locally and send results to online store. When you mention 20% hearing loss (which would be a very small loss), I think you meant 20dB (which seems big to me, but they call it moderate). I was 26 dB at the worst. 20dB is a factor of 10, doesn't seem moderate to me.

I used to wear in the ear amplifiers which were off the internet. They used batteries. I did it for about a year but they are way too loud. It amplified sounds that my brain used to filter out. Like the sound of my shoes walking. Finally got the over the ear inside the canal. It is programed for loss for each ear. It's been 6 months. No one can see them they are beige like my hair which covers my ears. I've had two adjustments and on a second program and have tried two sizes of ear buds. I hear most everything but am still not understanding some speech. Some people speak too softly. After ten years My brain no longer listens for conversation and concentrates as it did when younger. I'm 73 my hearing got worse ten years ago. I use captions but was missing so much in conversations. My doctor says it takes time to program my brain. My daughter became hard of hearing after a very high fever at age 4. She wears the latest over the ear like mine. After 4 years she hears speech very well. She says it takes a long time to train your brain to listen again for one thing. Your audiologist need to work with you because they've heard every kind of complaint. I like using my phone to reset volume and I lije hearing my phone ring in my ears no matter where my phone is. Then I hear the other person directly in my aids and don't disturb others like in a grocery store.

I had to retire early due to not being able to physically do my job after a severe back injury at work. It's about F'n time.... Hearing aids have been a scam monopoly for years. There is no reason a individual can't open an app on his cell phone and move sliders up and down like an equalizer with level controls for the frequency loss range he has. The cost should be under $100, fit in both ears and run off an app. Of course I am assuming we are talking about general hearing loss not due to a medical problems.

I paid $5,000 for hearing aids that have directional microphones and can be controlled with my phone. They also have rechargeable batteries. My main problem was hearing in a noisy environment like a restaurant or a house party. I've had them for 3 years and have recently given up on them, as they are of no help in a relatively loud setting. It's also a total PITA to change the click domes, the part that goes into your ear, and wax guards.

The directional modes on the Bose Hearphones work pretty well, i used in parties and subway, and hear better than my friend without it haha. I think the key is the Hearphones have the ability to produce a lot of amplification without too much distortion, something the tiny heating aids just simple cannot do . worth a shot for $500, plus they are great noise cancelling bluetooth headphones... with return policy .

I've owned several hearing aids for my moderate hearing loss, yet I rarely found myself wearing them besides in class and at work. First and biggest issue is the quality of the sound. Sure it amplifies sound of speech, but other unwanted sounds such as air conditions and background noise in crowded environments also get louder. The noise cancelling hearing aids I've tried are not viable as they dampen the sound to the point where it hinders my hearing of the person I'm speaking to. To me, the priority is advancement in technology over cost. I want hearing aids that work within your biology rather than act as an amplification medium.

You won't know which product is better for you. That is why these OTC devices are only for people with mild hearing loss. The problem is, without a hearing exam, you won't know what kind of hearing loss you have. You may not have hearing loss at all (wax impaction, fluid)! Or you may have something that can be surgically corrected (otosclerosis, perforated eardrum). If you choose to try an OTC device, it would be wise to get a hearing exam by an Audiologist first. Baha devices will not be OTC, of course.
