You might consider doing something more with the grout issue, since there’s now a direct path for spills, mop water, etc., to run down into the subfloor. Doesn’t need to be grout, but maybe some caulk or what have you to prevent infiltration.
@regahj2 жыл бұрын
That doesn't look like grout you removed. It looks like "Sanded Ceramic Tile Caulk" colored to match the grout. Custom Building Products makes one to match what you removed. It is less than a $10 fix at home depot. Just keep your finger wet as you spread it along the joint.

Awesome. We did the same thing but with two differences. We were installing new cabinets (Cabinets to Go) and because we are both taller, I set the cabinets 2" higher which then gave me an extra 2" in the kick. Then used push-to-open full extension glides. My wife loves the extra storage.

I did this same trick under a bathroom sink cabinet 35 years ago in a house I was renting. We kept valuables in there should we have a burglary. I reused the toe kick board, but didn’t put any pull on the drawer. There was enough space to get a finger over the top of the drawer face to pull it out a little, then pull it out the rest of the way from the sides. It’s probably still there in the house. In the kitchen cabinets I built from scratch for our present house, I used a base that was first leveled, then the cabinets set and screwed to the base. I considered designing the base with drawers, but instead elected to make the toe kick only 3 inches high instead of the usual 4” (I needed the vertical room for a custom trash/recycling drawer that had taller buckets). The base is screwed with multiple pocket holes, and is 3/4” solid poplar with cross-bracing at the cabinet divisions. I also sealed the base with silicone to keep mop water out. Obviously, this type of base wouldn’t work in the same manner. I know how I constructed my cabinets, but how would a homeowner be able to figure this out before causing untold damage? I’ve been a subscriber since your early days of your channel and love your ideas! Thank you!

April, I am absolutely going to do this! Thanks for the idea, it had never occurred to me how that space could have any usable depth. Our own island is in need of some work on the bottom anyway, so while I have it emptied and flipped will be the perfect time. I do think I'll add some stick-on weather strip to the underside of the cabinet directly above the drawer edges to help close that gap. There must be a permanent wind storm happening in our kitchen 3" above the floor or something -- the other low-down drawer is in the bottom of the oven, and we often have to clean that drawer and its contents due to dust coming in over the gap above the drawer. I don't know, the kitchen doesn't _seem_ that dusty.... :)
@thomasarussellsr2 жыл бұрын
I don't want to scare you, but is there any evidence of small critters in play? Any small "chocolate drops/rasins"? If the under stove drawer is the only dusty place, you may have vermin or bug issues that like the warmth. Or maybe pull the range/stove out and see if anything chewed a hole in the wall behind it?

Depends on the cabinet construction. Some have a built in toe kick like yours or are boxes placed on a platform.

That is a great idea. Unfortunately here in England it can't be doe. The cabinets each have 5 legs holding them up. 4 in each corner set in by about 5 centimetres and one in the very centre of the bottom. You could do it but, they would be small drawers. I had thought of a similar idea with drawers made in a 'Mathias Wandel' style, with wheels to maximize height, but because of the cabinet legs it was a no go. Your idea still ROCKS!
@culmalachie2 жыл бұрын
EH? In Scotland, we are more advanced: use Cardboard boxes as in Salad or fruit box/trays to slide BETWEEN the legs. Jobs a simple one. but our stone slab ( Caithness slab ) in the old kitchen doesn't lend itself to wooden drawers unless we rig up special runners over the uneven floor., we have a 6" space but is reduced by user longer / deeper doors....

Always respect for your hard work. However I must say we had a cabinet with drawers in the same area years ago. We did away with them because we discoverd that they tended to be used for things one needed very seldom (we all tend to not want to bend down a lot) and were just always filled with dust and dirt from walking back and forth. Years after I got the thought that sealing the draw fronts with felt (or other material) on the back side may reduce this problem or eliminate it altogether. Just a tip for those who may want to do this project as well.

I have been doing this for a while. What I really would like to do in the bathroom but have not been able to figure ou is; A toe kick drawer for a bathroom scale. It must meet the following criteria:1. Self opening and closing with the press of a toe; 2. And when you go to stand on the scale contained in the drawer the drawer will settle on the floor to stable it self ( very much those rolling step stools that one sees in kitchens that have retracting casters when weight is placed on them and thus allow the step stool to rest on the floor. Well the same principle here. I have experimented with spring loaded bearings as the rolling mechanism that when you step on them the drawer settles on the floor...but have not had an elegant solution. Go for it.
@thomasarussellsr2 жыл бұрын
What is the flooring? Felt glides may do the trick instead of casters or wheels. How nimble are your toes? An appropriately shaped pad or pull could work to pull the drawer out. Like a small(ish) pad/peddle sticking out, low down, that you could put a couple of toes or even the ball of your foot on to pull the drawer out, or a loop/pull you could grab with your first two toes? Just remember, depending on your drain configuration, you may have plumbing in your way if you want a base board bottom drawer under the sink area.
@robertthomas61272 жыл бұрын
Why so complicted? Just cut the exact form of the scale out of the drawer bottom and attach felt or synthetic gleiders to the bottom of the scale, place the scale in the form and your fit to go. Any sort of rollers will only damage the flooring with the time and the first time you stumble getting on or off the scale you will break the draw one way or the other .... so keep the cost down. 😉 Just my humble opinion... Go for it! .... and ... Good Luck!
@willemkruger45642 жыл бұрын
@@robertthomas6127 So how do you get the drawer to open? If you use a self opening release for the drawer in your scenario I think the friction of the scale sliding across the floor would be sufficient to prevent the drawer from opening..I am not convinced that a roller will damage a tile floor as found in bathrooms.
@robertthomas61272 жыл бұрын
@@willemkruger4564 ... One, probably better two springs on the rear side of the drawer which would push it out,weil it is guided by bearings (flat or round) on both sides. It would then open and close like a "Jack in the Box" if you know that that is? Older people amoungst us here should know what I mean. Yes, the springs have to be strong and long enough to transport it all the way out and you would have to use a bit of force with your foot to push it back in. You would also need a lever to press down with your foot to release the drawer so that it is moved forward. Which would then either click back in or be pushed up again to secure the drawer when closed. Ok, agreed that a good quality tile flooring may not be damaged from a roller moving over the tiles within a generation of usage. Particularlly when the roller is synthetic. However when you stand on it you will be applying your complete weight on the roller(s) which will be multiplied by the full length by a roller bearing and maximized to a point if you use one or more ball bearings. Could this not cause damage with time and possibly daily usage? ... Another option could be as I stated above with gliders on the bottom as well as on the sides. Generally when we weigh ourselves we have no shoes on so if the drawer front has an upholstered opening in the front one can stick a foot in and pull the scale out and then push it back in. No rollers or springs necessary. Gleiders always have the advantage that the weight is spread over a surface and would minimize damage. All just sudden ideas that may be good or bad without any previous trial.

Push to open slides? Also, cool when people do this to stairs for shoe storage.

Yup, that's a great idea when building your kitchen from the beginning. Might be a bit more difficult as an add in to existing cabinets like April just did. Not a lot of room to work under installed cabinets.

Except when someone leaves one of the drawers open on the stairs.

A push-to-open option would be a great addition!

Great idea 👍 Your channel is full of inspirational ideas. We are going to have a refit of our small kitchen later this year. I'm going to ask the company to incorporate this idea.
