Do you have a Homebiogas 2.0? How are you working with the anaerobic overflow? What are your plans?
Do you have blackwater you can treat? Or a compost toilet?
How would you handle your waste in an emergency?
These are incredibly important and VITAL skills and understandings!! If you'd like to learn more, please join the Kickstarter for Permaculture Soil Science & Solutions:

This is so cool! Please keep us informed on both the biogas and the fertilizer.

Excellent work making waste a resource... I remember when the first home biogas unit was being pitched on indiegogo - talked to the team a little bit at that point. It's good to see they're growing and reaching out! Did they give you this unit to play with or did you purchase it?

Taking the Terra Preta approach, of sorts! I like it!! EM taking the place of kitchen middens for more effective use of space and cutting down the time factor involved in composting! Woot woot!! Seriously though, really cool approach, Matt!!

I forgot to ask before, but what's the dirt on prescription drugs and humanure? (See what I did there? 😋) In a perfect world, I'd be able to phase them out as I reclaim perfect health from eating perfectly clean food from my own garden, but to me that just doesn't seem realistic. Is it really a concern that they will accumulate in the soil and work their way back into the food? P. S. Have you seen the studies showing that eisenia fetida can be used to take up heavy metals in a compost pile? I'm not sure if I should believe it or not. Thanks, Matt.

Great info man, is the gas ready to use yet, and do you feed it everyday?

Just finished the 3 week initial ferment - now I can feed it :) Gas is just starting up, so not much going on

Matt Powers - The Permaculture Student I’m a farmer here on big island Hawaii, also running a restaurant and we have 25 gallons every day of scraps , I just compost it , would love to get another system going, great show, would like to talk sometime 808-640-5117, I’m growing hundreds of crops in the rainforest no chemicals only minerals, I could share some amazing information too, I can talk on the phone and work same time. Aloha

I almost assembled a biodigester of solarcities but I am composting with the bokashi composting method making my own IMO3 (solid EM) with sawdust, biochar, bran , LIMO (EM) and molasses.... going straight to a IMO5 with my kitchen scraps... 🌞🤠🌱 3M materia organica , minerales, microorganismos 3S sol , sombrero , suelo 3M organic matter, minerals, microorganisms 3S sun, srtaw hat ,soil 😂

I'm intrigued by this biogas digester. Does it produce enough for heat, or just cooking? Do we know of anyone who has converted their camper from propane to biogas? I'm living in a camper right now (stationary) that uses propane, but I also do humanure, and this has got me thinking... 🤔

You can absolutely cook with the gas and heat but not for very long so it's not a daily heater.

@@ThePermacultureStudent That's too bad. Hopefully it's on the horizon. I don't use much, but I still get pangs of guilt everytime I refill these tanks.

You could if you, well... "contributed" enough to it each day, but the small model he went with is designed for two people and apparently averages enough methane to run a gas burner (basically a camping stove) for an hour or two per day. In theory you could get some kind of pump and slowly fill a propane tank throughout the year, and then only use it in winter... assuming it doesn't degrade. To heat a living space in the winter, without saving it for a long period of time, you'd need a much bigger one and be adding manure from something like a few cows/horses, a bunch of pigs, etc -- as well as some people. I have seen people do that, using custom biogas systems that work the exact same way, using livestock and human manure to fill up large containers, then use it to run propane generators that can be modified to run on methane.

How much/often do you have to feed the digester to get steady gas flow? Do you solely use biogas?
@ThePermacultureStudent

Great question! I just got it going - gas is about 30-40% filled now. I'll know more as I use it over time, but it's just the first stages of it and I'm sure what I feed it will influence the gas output and quality. I want to figure out what it's output is to see how much we can rely upon it - I also want to see what it does with a gas generator! How much electricity is inside one of the filled bags of gas? Right?? :) I'm having fun with it! It's a living experiment!

@@rafaelnavarro5522 You'd want to build what is essentially a very big septic tank, made of concrete, that has a dome at the top of it and a tap that siphons out methane, then use a pump to push it into a tank for use. You can find designs for exactly that online.
