I know this is a 4 year old video now but it has just solved a crazy double nat and lack of qos functionality issue ive been having in my home network. My new isp gateway suffers from terrible buffer bloat and has no modem only or bridge mode. Plus it uses carrier grade nat. I have an asus router running openwrt firmware and have had a nightmare trying to bridge them without either double nat or a los of qos. Now have a managed switch running pfsense qos and prioritizing traffic and have reverted the asus back to og firmware and running in ap mode and it seems to ve working well! @soulcheese71495 жыл бұрын
There's a bit of misinformation here unfortunately and quite a bit to address, but the major points being: QoS *only* makes a difference if you're running into some form of contention and want to prioritize traffic. It's also not recommended on most consumer grade equipment and usually does more harm than good. QoS will *NOT* make traffic any less latent under normal conditions. I would advise heavily against its use for most consumers. The double NAT thing isn't a problem in the scenario you provided. Double NAT is an issue when both DHCP servers are on the same network. In the diagram, the ISP provided equipment is only leasing a single address to the consumer router. It's better to put the ISP device into bridge mode, but stating that this scenario will cause problems isn't true unless you're attempting to port forward. The "gateway" is really a 3-in-1, Router/Switch/AP. Usually poor versions of each. The idea of having a "high performance" access point with a "low performance" access point is nonsense. I would never in a million years spend that much money on lackluster Netgear equipment. If you're serious about your network but don't want to spend a fortune look into something like Ubiquiti.
@soulcheese71495 жыл бұрын
Correction on double NAT, I don't know why I was conflating it with DHCP in my head, lack of sleep and all that. It's still not a problem unless you're port forwarding.

I'm kinda new to his videos, mainly because of doing research for tech he happens to have videos for. And one reoccurring theme I notice already is a consistent form of Misinformation. Even the title here where it claims to teach how to turn an ISP router in to a Gaming router, is nothing more than a video about how to buy another piece of hardware to get the functionality out of the original hardware one tried to use in the first place. I tell myself at least he is only effecting PS4 users, I mean they are on PSN so who the hell cares what their connection and online gaming experience is like. 😅

I have a cable modem and connected it to a router to make it useful for more than one device. My modem is an Arris from the ISP. The connection as sold to me is 100 megabit but I often get more. That is only because I got rid of the old router which had no gigabit Ethernet and got one that does have it. I was not expecting gigabit speeds and was not really sure if I would see more than 100 megabit. To my pleasant surprise the better router allowed an extra 70 megabits to come through. Not all people will have the luck I had. I am using a TP-Link C7 router and they are usually good. Some people who reviewed them said they had problems with them but it is very difficult to know what they did to theirs, I had no problems at all!! I already had that extra boost in speed before the epidemic so that wasn't just my ISP being generous and making quarantining easier for me and other people. In a way I am glad for that extra bit of speed because they (like all the others) slowly raise your bill higher. It seems to me that the slowly rising price is more for TV service really.

I just want to mention real quick on the part with the gateway to proper 3rd party router, if you cannot get your provider to provide you with a modem, most gateways do have a feature called "bridge mode" this feature will essentially turn your gateway into a modem and then you have no problems when connecting your 3rd party router to it.

This doesnt work for every provider unfortunately. Also, testing with bridge mode I've found a huge cut in speed/ throughput when using "bridge mode" on a high speed connection. Also, I encountered errors with IPv6 compatibility. There are people who have very good results using bridge mode but for me it was inconsistent and I wouldn't recommend it
@backjonas5 жыл бұрын
John Glasscock the reason to use bridged mode is that you are then free to use whatever routing gear you want. It’s not going to work well if you just put the bridged connection straight into your managed switch. You should try Pfsense if you haven’t already.
@JohnGlasscock5 жыл бұрын
@@backjonas I'm not saying to put a bridged connection into a managed switch ( which would actually work the same) I'm saying you can avoid bridge mode all together utilizing a different hardware set up. If you want to use your own hardware, see if your gateway has some form of modem mode, mine does, it shuts down all wifi and ethernet functionality and just acts as a modem and this means that you don't need a switch, most modern wifi/ethernet routers have some form of ethernet and wifi based QoS or something that will allow you to set priority, netgear actually has an amazing GUI for wifi based priority but it does carry a premium.

You didn't explain how to turn off the wifi on the gateway. Also, if I'm understanding this correctly, I would need to purchase a router in order for this to work? Or could I just buy the switch and set my PS4 to high priority? I play with a LAN cable.

It’s usually in your settings. You can access gateway settings with the URL that your ISP tells you.

Do you just use the switch then or do you always need the ASUs router because you only showed the ASUS in the diagram when connecting via WiFi? Please

Dude in networking the only thing that helps latency and ping is to have the best solid connection to a good isp, working cat 6 cables, and only one person on the lan using the wan on a good day for the isp that hopefully takes care of its dns and mapping for its outside router directions.

Cat6 will not improve latency over Cat5e but I agree with the rest

Noobie question here. My cable modem has 2 ethernet ports (A and B) at the back. Is it perfectly fine for my desktop pc to directly connect to ethernet port A and have my wifi router to occupy ethernet port B? what are the implications, pros and cons of this setup? thanks in advance for your response.

Michael Cui I don’t think anyone can answer your question here, try posting it on Reddit or a forum.

I have a gateway and R7000 and im the only one using internet in my house just for my ps4 pro, pc, and phone. Cant I just bridge my Gateway and use my nighthawk? I left a comment on your last video about this in a little more detail but you put out this video today

You can. It's just not something I recommend for everyone after doing enough testing with it

Don’t get me wrong you’ve done a good job explaining everything, it’s not really true reflection of your title though, and definitely not cheap when your talking managed switches and a pairs of routers etc...

Some gateways allow modem mode usually it’s hidden away in setup or administrative settings

So you don’t need a switch if you have extra space on your modem?

John, Recently, I tried to set my system up as you have but I seem to be running into a fee kinds with my Xbox One S. I use a fiber provider in Des Moines Iowa called CenturyLink. CenturyLink is a parent company associated with AT&T. CenturyLink uses a modem/router combo gateway (either Actiontec or netgear if you are extremely lucky) i have 1G speeds with fiber but usually only get on average 300 down and around 700 up. The gateway I have to use per the ISP is an Actiontec c3000a. I have logged into it and set my port forwarding and tried to change my DNS to Either a Cloudflare or OpenDNS server as that is what is recommend by Benchmark. When i plug my ethernet into my PC i get a ping of 2ms with a download of usually 200mbps and an upload of 700 to 790mbps. When i do the same test on my xbox one s i get a ping between 25ms and 52ms and a download of 80-150mbps and an upload no higher than 60mpbs with 0 to 1% packet loss. I also change the DNS of my xbox from automatic to manual and enter the DNS of the respective Cloudflare or openDNS servers to match what my gateway is using. This has little to no effect even when clearing the xbox mac address between changes (which i have read can sometimes help) Ultimately, i am trying to reduce ping in multiplayer for games such as Battlefield 5 and Cod but, i seem to have issues replicating the low ping on my computer to my xbox. From my gateway c3000A i have ports forwarded for battlefield, apex, and ghost recon games for better connectivity. I have the netgear S8000 switch with the gaming profile enabled and hardwired into my xbox. I then have my NIGHTHAWK 3200ACS in AP mode to handle all of my wifi concerns which is what I saw you do in another video. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to lower my ping or get better speeds on the xbox and I have a suspicion that even though I am changing the DNS on my gateway, my ISP isn't really allowing the change. Can you offer any suggestions on what to do from here? I dont understand how one on Microsoft based system (PC) i get one result and on another, it is completely different.

I have xfinity modem and router combo. I'm thinking about getting the netgear cm1000 and the xr500 . What do you think of the set up? I hardwire my ps4 upstairs but downstairs I use wifi for my xbox one . Should I get a different setup?
