Nearly every source you find will tell you not to use QoS, even for gaming. There are pros and cons for it, and sometimes it just comes down to your own specific setup, so I would recommend testing with and without QoS to find out which performs best for yourselves.

I've tried google, open, and cloudfare dns to see if changed download speeds, which is did. My isp dns was around 43ms and the other 3 are at 21so it was ideally "faster" but then I saw 4.2.2.1 and I tried it. It boosted my upload speeds and I had a 21 ping to it. But my question is this, semi unrelated, when you do buffer bloat testing, do you let dslreports select your servers or do you choose them? I've used googles in the past but it's not even the closest serve to me and could add slight jitter or BB because of distance. I'm closest to Texas so ideally I'd want to use them instead but I just wanted your opinion.

That XR700 which I have is a monster. With aggregation ports. Your switch will benefit. However not a big deal unless you have LAN parties. Its overkill since we're nowhere near speeds that high. Since even fiber speeds are still limited per city. QoS is a big factor in all this. DUMA OS which has just hit the market with the XR500 or XR700 Netgear routers help even further lowering ping for gaming. And bufferbloat is the most important thing to have consistency preventing jitter/ping spikes. Which benefit for smoother gameplay as well

You have to tinker with the number you choose. Go too low, and you won't have uplink to spare, choose too much and you'll choke out the router. It needs a bit to spare too. This is why he said 50%-60% but again it all depends on your connection. As someone with rural, satallite internet I've seen major differences when raising or lowering the number by 500kbps increments. And I'm a DBFZ player. So the slightest ping spike or jitter is very noticable. Your best bet is to experiment and judge by the the quality in your GAME. Not your speed tests. The only exception would be high detail speed tests that grade your buffer bloat and what not. The purpose of QOS is to reduce spikes and jitter, not increase your speed.
@Juloww4 жыл бұрын
@@Darkseany hi you seem really good at it i have 26mbs connection download, how much should i put in qos ? whats the basics of it, what should i try, experiment etc.. ( i just the lower ping possible)
@Darkseany4 жыл бұрын
@@Juloww well first off, your download is kind of irrelevant. You don't need a lot. Download speed is for things like watching videos or streaming or downloading updates/games. If gaming is your goal here, then upload speed is the focus. Your upload speed plays a much larger role in gaming than download. It depends on your situation. If you have others in your house using it, then I'd say in the range of 40% to 60% of your max upload speed. However if you're the only one who really needs the upload speed, for example being the only gamer in the house, you could go higher. That said, since I made that previous comment I've found something much better than standard QOS called SQM. It works in a similar fashion except it is designed to alter the way your data transfers, not just how much it can do so consistently. Lag in games isn't just caused by drops in upload speed, it's often, if not mostly caused by "bufferbloat". It's not the easiest concept to explain in brief terms, but there is a website completely devoted to explaining it. Just google it. The ONLY site you should ever use to speed test is DSLreports because it allows you to select your type of ISP to get the most accurate results (cable, satellite, WISP, DSL heck even mobile and public hotspots). Always test with a laptop directly connected to your router or modem. ;] More importantly though,it displays your bufferbloat in milliseconds and gives it a grade. This is literally the lag you experience in game and sometimes it can be caused by something as simple as how your router transfers packets. SQM(Smart Queue Management) can GREATLY improve that. There's a bit of a catch though. Most routers often don't have SQM and often times it requires you to install a custom firmware on your router, typically Openwrt. BE WARNED. If you've never installed firmware onto a router before MAKE SURE you do all your research and have the CORRECT and COMPATIBLE build/version for your specific router. Also make sure that the router is not reset or turned off during the installation process. Failing to take these measures has a strong possibility of bricking your router. By that I mean it will no longer function properly if at all. If you are somewhat tech savvy and brave enough to take the risk, read up on bufferbloat, Openwrt, and setting up SQM. Then research the exact model of your router and see if you can find it on the compatibility list at Openwrts website. The process isn't all that hard or long, it's just a bit risky for someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Whatever you choose to do, good luck. :]

I lowered my mtu down because of packet loss using a dual band router as an access point through a dual antenna two way extender that is connecting my router to a main router over 1000 ft away. Getting 50 Mbs Down, 18 Up, with a 10 to 15 ms ping. 5g wifi using Ipv6 through Starlink ISP. Best Dns server I have found, is the new; Control D (unfiltered) or Control D + Ads & Tracking. Only real issue is a frame rate red line, once and a while, which usually clears up in a couple seconds. Seems to only be an issue, in the early morning hours 3 to 5, when Riot pushes Eastcoast users onto Westcoast servers. Thanks for your explanations of network topics, you keep the dialog simple and easy to understand.

Just set game ports or "service port" to highest priority and set port 80 and port 443 to lowest your router will do the rest. If you are using bandwidth percentages use 67% for highest and 33% for normal. I would avoid settings for "medium" priority I think this just makes your router not sure of what it's doing. Hope this helps please give me a like if it does.

I have 500 down and 20 up from my isp, but when I input 80% of that and run a dsl test the bufferbloat is bad. I have to reduce the speed to 300 for it to be good. Also You said to use dynamic QOS its better. John Glasscock true, and John you know what I’ve noticed? Is that yes you can subscribe to Comcast and get let’s say, a 400MBPS down and 25 upload, (what I have) just regularly. They’ll cap you at one terabyte of data for the month and if you go over you have to pay. Thing is, whenever I speed test on my modem when I’m hardwired directly to it, it got only 80-120MBPS download while 25 upload, and yes I know in the real time you won’t get all of your bandwidth but what I’m trying to say is if you subscribe to their unlimited data plan, you’ll get a more consistent stream of data to your modem to supply your network with. Now when I speed text my modem I’m getting all my bandwidth, and even doing more well in games, consistently, than I already have. It’s a theory but worth trying it out. I upgraded my modem and router to the latest firmware and when the router was connected to the modem, without the unlimited data plan, it got my full bandwidth but it wasn’t consistent all the time even though it was great internet. Now, I get it consistently. Looks like they’re holding out imo until you subscribe. Just a thought, hope you have a good Christmas my guy!

Like I’m not able to connect with friends and if I do we take long to find games assuming because of me. By the way, I’m not from the states. I stay in Guam, so relatively I always find games with 150-200 ping, which is the usually for where I stay at. Any tips settings recommended for me?

How do you get a 1000mbps upload speed? Mine is 10mbps.. 😅. Also, I've been looking everywhere for the bridge/router mode stuff and you finally answered my question ;)

Appreciate the content, would it be more advantageous to run your ps4 through a router or through the network switch? The nighthawk s8000 does give me some qos functionality.

Depends on your setup IMO

hey i love you channel i was wondering if maybe you made any videos that have to do with the R8000 or if they are pretty much the same? and i would really love to try and make my internet run better or at least setup which devices get internet first or the most power or anything like that. thanks so much have a good one. :)

Hey glasscock I did everything you said in the video, now I’m having this weird problem where I set my PS4 to the highest priority and everything else on low and when I test internet speed on the PS4 it won’t go above (7mbs/2) I have a 200mbs internet connection. However the devices that are on low priority are acheiveing 200+ which is weird. PS4 is wired and I have the exact same router as yours (r7000)

Your ping does not reflect your uplink and downlink speed. It reflects the actual time it physically takes for the handshake between your end and the server to complete. A dying router, a damaged or extremely long ethernet cable can cause it even if your speeds are high. Like if you were bridging through a second router that has to jump to the main router, then to your satellite or whatever you use, you will see an increased ping because the connection has to travel through more things before completing a handshake. Not the best explanation but yeah. Ping is the actual physical speed of your connection, not the data transfer rate.

Hello, I've enjoyed watching many of your videos. I'm hoping you can confirm a few things. I have an Arris Xb6 and I am going to be buying the Netgear s8000 and r7000. Is your router the r7000 P 2300 or the r7000 ac1900 ? Is there a difference, does it matter which one I get ? I only ask because your Amazon link goes to the Xr500. If I understand correctly I don't put the Arris Xb6 in Bridge Mode with it going to Netgear s8000 for Qos with the r7000 in AP mode. Is this correct ? Thank You for you time sir.

Or would it be better to get the xr500 and put my Arris XB6 in bridge mode. You have mentioned before that it cuts your speeds but below you replied to butcherx that Duma OS is a game changer and you would use it if your ISP supported Native bridge mode. My arris XB6 does bridge mode with a tap of a button but I cannot find if it is "Native Bridge Mode" What is Native Bridge Mode and do you know off hand if the Arris XB6 has it ? I've been googling it but can't find out.

Yeah you're pretty much spot on with everything. Sorry about that, yeah mine is the ac1900. In my opinion if your provider let's go change your modem I'd recommend a cm1000 and xr500 instead. A switch and AP is really only useful for more complex networks or people who cannot use their own modem

If I'm wired, is there a lot of changes I need to make my router? I have a linksys but I recently got a nighthawk but haven't set it up yet. I play a lot of BO4 and I normally run around 60 ping at 80 megs

Does it matter if you use UDP or TCP? I couldn't get mine to work with TCP. I've read that UDP is better for gaming. On the Black Ops 4 network screen, it said it tried to use UDP 3075 to open my NAT. I changed my settings, on my router, to UDP 3075 and the NAT Type opened up.

John just curious I have 1GB fiber internet, all the correct hardware to include a fully bridged NETGEARXR500. That being said I can’t get a ping lower than 30 when playing Fifa19 and experience up to 1sec delay. Is it true that my distance from a server may be a factor I can’t overcome?

Hey @JohnGlasscock I purchased a Nighthawk r6700 v3 Router. I've also raised my speed with Spectrum isp from 200/10 - 400/20. I do notice a very slight increase in speed playing Xbox-X.. (killing with leas bullets-dying less) Probably due to the raise from 10ms to 20mps. However my latency still averages 57-62ms. Before I ditch Spectrum for AT&T (my only 2 isps where I live) Do you recommend I purchase a new Modem as well to enhance the Nighthawk and/or lower my ping? If so, which modem would you recommend? It would be nice lower my ping a bit, anything lower would help. (A steady 37-47 I'd be a happy camper!) Should I also swap from Cat 5e cables to cat7... would that help? I did watch your newer vid on ping tests youve ran, but still lol. Heck.. Ive watched ALOT of your vids, YOU ROCK!! Youre so efficient, Ive never had to ask anything, this is my first question ever. Thanks.
