yeah I learned how to use bearings before building this, then I figured that using bearings on this was just overkilled. even with the friction of pvc, paddling it is effortless, at least for me. Using pvc no only make it much simpler, you also don't need to deal with any corrosion issue, nor any oil adding is needed. (I hate to add oil on things that constantly expose to rain)

I was out in my kayak today, thinking about motorizing it, and the hassle of batteries, then I thought why not do a paddle wheel setup, I like your simple and effective set up. Add it to the project list. Wanna make it easily removable for the drive there and back One idea was to have independent paddle wheels so I can steer with them, I might try that out first I might even put hydrofoils on it, we'll see

The only major downside seems to be the annoyance of splashing water all over oneself (as one can also see mentioned in the reviews of similar projects found in the suggestions here on the right side=>). So your video would be even more helpful and inspire even more viewers to give it a go, if you could add a very rudimentary description (a couple of sentences) about 1-2 potential work-arounds you found keeping oneself dry, which you mentioned in the comments below, thanks! Just as a metaphor: there is a reason why spraydeck protection is a BIG deal/or even a must-have for kayaks and packrafts for covering longer stretches of flat-water (independent of paddling skills).

That is really fantastic man. Do you have the exact measurements for the pipes and everything? Like diameters of the wheels etc?.. Do you think your measurements feet all kayaks? How did you measure the sinking of the wheels in the water? How deep must sink in the water? Thank you! I was trying to find a solution for my fishing kayak. And I believe this is perfect! for the dimension i would say you really need to figure it out yourself as it's different from boat to boat. you can preinstall a T pvc connector on your boat and then hang a pipe or stick on it, make it perpendicular to water surface, and then measure how long the arm of your wheel needs to be. just make sure your water paddles are completely submerged under water at the lowest position.

Very nice project ! How hard is it to pedal ? I’m thinking of putting 6 propellers instead of 4 like you did, would you recommend ?

1. for me pedaling it is effortless. 2. in theory, the more propellers, the more smooth pedaling experience you will get. I just don't have a good way to make a strong pedal wheel with 6 propellers from regular PVC pieces. if you got an idea on how to make it then go ahead. but you need to make sure the wheel structure is very strong.

depends on how you define "long time". I had my rudder system, which is made out of 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch piple, built some time in August last year. it was placed outside in my backyard and directly expose to sun every day, and it has been thru -15 C winter and 40 C summer, and yet it still work just like it's new.

but be sure to use the thicker pipe, dont use the thin ones. not sure what's available in your local store, but it's called Sch. 40 Pipe in my local stores.

bike paddle system will definitely works. However, a paddle system with pvc not only make the building process much simpler, you also don't need to deal with any corrosion issue, nor any oil adding is needed. (and I don't think oil dripping on a boat is a pleasant thing)

yes, it does, and there are a few solutions that i was going to post last year, but I didn't have the time and energy due to my new marriage, kid and some other things going on in life. hopefully get some time to post it this year
