I am trained as a tech editor. It's been hard to convince crocheters that an editor is different from a tester and needed if a designer wants to gain the trust of consumers. I just entered retirement, so just starting up...ANY side hustle WILL take time, energy and effort to get it going.

Congrats on the retirement, that’s awesome! And yes editor is sooo much different than testers! I will admit, as a member of the yarn community, I have found some fiber artists can be stubborn when it comes to changing something from the way they’ve always done it….

Speaking of side hustles… I’m working on an order and was listening. lol It does take time and work. Patience is Key. It doesn’t hurt to take that leap and give it a try. When you started talking about digital products, my gears were turning a little. lol Thank you Shannon for the inspiration!

I like your point about bringing skills from other areas of life to yarn stuff. I’ve been wondering - do you think your experience as a stylist laid the groundwork for your KZbin approach? I keep thinking that you’re so good at chatting to an audience of all kinds of people, which I could see being a skill that would come in handy working with hair clients! 🤓

It’s very possible Helen! I guess when I’m filming, in my mind, i am just talking to one person. You might be on to son there!!!

I really want to start a yputube channel, I don't just crochet i enjoy paper crafts and bullet journaling too I was thinking of doing those 2 things on my channel, I don't think I want to be on camera though I have chronic illness and want to inspire and support people who also suffer like I do I need some guidance on how I can do it do you have any top tips or tricks?

Hi Clare! 👋 If you’re thinking about it, I would recommend giving it a try! You won’t know if you like it unless you give it a try! I would suggest two different approaches. First, making a several videos on each of the topics you enjoy and seeing which one is easiest and gets more views then niching down in that subject. Or look at it from a different perspective, meaning, the niche is talking and encouraging other people who have chronic illnesses. You can offer tips, show products that help you, share an emotional experience, and give glimpses into your daily/weekly/monthly life and how your support your mind/body with activities including crochet and paper crafting. I definitely understand being hesitant to be on camera. It’s hard sometimes for me to find the energy to “be camera ready” what I have found is that I’m most comfortable looking like myself but turning up the dial about 30%. Basically in real life I wear less make up and I’m a little bit quieter and slower but I find it helps when I’m filming. You don’t have to go all out to be on camera. The other thing I do is pace myself. I generally only have the energy to get ready and film one day then another day I’ll edit and then another day I’ll upload it and do the little KZbin Studio settings. It makes it much more manageable for me. I’m excited for you and hope you give it a try! 😃

There are also videos out there showing you how to film but not be on camera, which you might research. Also with crochet and paper crafting, so much of that is working with your hands, so really the only thing that has to be camera ready is your hands. Some crochet videos I watch I don't even know what they look like, but I keep watching their videos because of the value of their content that is offered. If you have value to share then the views will come in time. I hope this helps! Also, I'm chronically ill myself, and totally understand your feelings, I'm not just pulling this advise out of the air.

I LOVE the Supernova in the Terraform Colorway (that you have), I've worked up almost an entire project with it, but as we're heading into winter I wasn't sure to finish it or wait till the end of summer next year to finish. The yarn itself it lightweight and wonderful to work with, it has a bit of wool in it, but oh... the colors! LOVE IT! I got it in Mars Landing, and Mother Earth Colorways too. On sale of course, cause... $5 is kinda pricy too. Just saying. 🙄

@ShannonTalksYarn I will as soon as I am able, I finished the shawl portion of the project (yeah that pattern 😉, it's the last one honest) but it worked up so beautifully with that pattern. 😀 The granny stitch really showcases the color changes.
