Woohoo! Finally testing new art supplies. This is the long awaited review of Turner Acryl Gouache from Turner Colour Works which many people compare to Holbein Acryla Gouache. Both brands are from Japan and very beloved and popular there. Since they have gained popularity in western countries as well I will compare Turner to Holbein which is still the most known and hyped. Even though they are both Acrylic Gouache paints and look similar at first glance they are different at closer look.
I got various paints from Turner, including their Pastel line, some Japanesque paints and even a Retarder Medium. They were shipped from Japan. Watch me try them out, test them against Holbein and paint a portrait with them.
I hope this video not only entertains you but helps you determine wether or not Acryl Gouache from Turner might be for you - find out if it is the best bang for the buck! Grab some snacks and paint along with me, you're all invited into my tiny yet cozy art studio.

I like them both but tend to lean towards Turner because they are half the price of Holbein in the US. Your video says Turner dries slower than Holbein and and there are others that say it dries faster. I add both Golden's Acrylic Retardant and a couple drops of water in both and use them interchangeable on a stay wet palette so I am not sure because I really don't notice a difference.

@@MoniDmajor Same here! I just bought the holbein and it just arrived, and I am disappointed to see that in your review it doesn't work with coloured pencil :( Because that's what I was going to use it for. But I only bought a few colours so it's not too bad, it's good to have in my art studio. I would prefer the turner to be honest, but luckily I did buy some traditional gouache from Russian master class, I heard it's really good gouache and one of my favorite artists from Ukraine uses that on the same paper that I am planning to also use with coloured pencils. But I am tempted to get the turner acryla gouache! The toothyness that it creates is very interesting and can grab onto soft pastel and colored pencils! Your review was very eye opening and I hope your channel grows! Your art is absolutely amazing too, I come from a digital graphic design background and am trying to get into fine art because I love working with my hands and using real pigments and tools.

@@dreamrabbits5072 Your comment made my day! Bear in mind, though: I only pencil tested 6 colors and some colors (the lighter ones) did work with colored pencils it just looks really unpleasant and you still have to use force. And if you want the toothiness you talk about, Turner Japanesque is what you should get - that one is grainier. The standard Turner is similar to Holbein when it comes to the touch

Another great review. Your reviews are some of the best I've seen, where I actually feel what it would be like to use this paint, all the small nuances that matter, and also the big picture. Your painting is great - the amount of control you have is impressive. Do you ever use a limited color palette and mix your own colors? Do you still also use traditional gouache? I've been using traditional gouache and I love that it's not acrylic paint - I can get up mid session and no paint is wasted and no cleanup necessary.
@MoniDmajor
@MoniDmajor 2 жыл бұрын
I cry with joy 🥲 I use all the colors available to me but rarely do I use them as they are but mix my own values instead. With this many colors I find it really overwhelming to make a quick decision, that’s why I always pick variations of primary and secondary colors plus some extra colors (that fit the color scheme I have in mind). Actually, I do come from traditional Gouache and only got into Acrylic Gouache this year. Traditional Gouache is still my favorite medium, look and feel wise! However, I am still not very good when it comes to picking and mixing the right tones and values, and I messed up so many paintings after many hours of work because I couldn’t fix my mistakes, muddy colors or the paper couldn’t take any more layers anymore. That’s why I needed to try Acrylic Gouache. That being said, I still think Traditional Gouache feels magical and there is something about how it looks when the colors blend and create something beautiful and unexpected. And then, sometimes, it just looks like crap 💩 The wasting paint aspect and not being able to just go to the bathroom or cook dinner mid session really drives me nuts with Acrylic Gouache. Thank you so much for your encouraging words, it means the world to me

Hey Alice, I will review Holbein Gouache and The Heikala art box. Currently I am fighting one sickness after another, and also my drawing desk broke and I have no alternative drawing surface, once I have dealt with that I continue with traditional art, meanwhile I am playing some with Digital Art but I am afraid my audience wouldn’t want to see it, might give it a try and upload a digital speedpaint. Regarding Turner: Yes, they deserve more attention, they are just so damn good, I don’t get why everyone prefers Holbein. But maybe it’s more a matter of availability, maybe Turner is less available in some countries. I don’t regret the Holbein purchase at all, but like I said, I will buy Turner Acryl Gouache from now on. Thank you soooo much for your kind words and have a great day!

@@MoniDmajor I'm very sorry to hear that, fingers crossed that you get well soon, being healthy is the most important thing especially nowadays. Personally I would be interested in s digital art tutorial/speedpaint video since I like your style, be it in traditional or digital media. I think Holbein has a bigger following because it was well known in the first place for its watercolors, so it was a snowball effect. Turner is definitely Acryl Gouache king though, considering they offer a whopping 200+ colors in various finishes!

The best way I've found to keep these paints from drying is a stay-wet palette. A home made one is perfectly fine if you have the discipline to finish a painting within a day or two. I'm don't so I bought special ones for miniature painters and I am not exaggerating when I say I've had paints for months in there. Game changer for me. I've never had any sheen so maybe it's a thing that happens when the retarder builds up? Because I don't use that so maybe that's what causes it?
@MoniDmajor
@MoniDmajor Жыл бұрын
Okay so now I know you got the miniature painter stay wet palette, it’s exactly the one that has been on my wishlist for a year, I am considering getting it now thanks to you! Which size do you have? And regarding the sheen, I don’t think it’s the retarder, over time I noticed it’s the paints that have white in it seem to have a slight sheen
@Auhsa
@Auhsa Жыл бұрын
@@MoniDmajor I got the large (blue) one because I suspected I would want the space. I guessed correctly, since the colors lasts so long I can use any accidentally excess paint for other projects. Feels so nice not to waste such expensive paints, huzzah! Tho some experimenting with the dampness of the sponge is needed, if it's too wet the paint turns very liquid. Which is good for miniature painting but can get messy with lager quantities of paint. I honestly can't see any sheen on any of my works, how very mysterious.

I've watched a few of your videos now since I'm debating jumping (back) into acrylic gouache. Had to comment that your videos are some of the best I've seen for 'art KZbin' - no b.s., chill, excellent lighting, great asides, just the info I want, a nice speed paint and no stupid fillers. Maybe it's because you're German, I get along great them :) [ As an aside, I've debated the Japanesque line as I can see the advantage of having some built in texture if you have a very graphic style...but I have yet to pull the trigger on that one. ]

You know, it’s tough to talk about it on social media but I have been going through a dark phase for weeks now (RL problems) and even though I never planned to be a big art youtuber and started this channel casually now that I put up a few videos I suddenly feel so much pressure to perform well and I don’t feel like I am able to at the moment. Which is why just yesterday I decided to delete my channel. Hipstery Vlogs and weekly content is just neither my style nor realistic for me schedule and mental health wise. Most videos take 5days+ for me to record and edit and even though it is my passion I later on question myself and feel like it’s pointless, because neither am I a unique good artist nor do I believe my videos are special in any way. I ramble but point is, you have absolutely no idea how much your comment means to me. I am overwhelmed, what you describe that you like about my videos is what I have been doubting or feeling uncomfortable about. So speechless and at a loss of words. I am so glad to hear I did not waste your time. Acrylic Gouache is awesome but I am currently considering to go back to watercolors and traditional gouache and to use Acrylic Gouache for clean opaque flats and first layers. You asked me about watercolor paper and I just use it because I haven’t been too lucky with acrylic pads yet. Besides, I am used to being a mixed media artist and using watercolor, gouache, colored pencils and acrylics in a piece and making these decisions as I go. I feel watercolor paper works even better than mixed media paper even though it is absorbent. Whenever it is too absorbent or I want even more texture I use a thinned wash of Gesso. It’s probably not smart and I’m sure this is not what professionals do, but I am not wealthy enough to buy new art supplies all the time so I try to wing it with what I got. If you have Acrylic Gouache and Gesso maybe you can get similar results? Japanesque really feels like Gesso. Thank you for your honest and kind words of encouragement, Jennifer

@@MoniDmajor I’m sorry to hear you’re going through some dark times. In my experience, those dark times are the source of the most personal growth, and the darker they are, the more transformational they can be. My advice would be, try not to dwell too long in it. Find some space, go for a walk in nature, laugh with *real* friends, fill your creative well, so to speak…..Re: deleting your channel, it’s okay to let it go. It’s too easy to end up doing something you’re great at but that is not serving your fundamental needs/goals. I learned way too late in life to take my mental health seriously and to size down my goals and priorities. Your concerns are precisely why I’ve hesitated for so long in launching a channel of my own. Kind of old school but I think I’m just going to blog about art instead - it leaves more time to actually make art!

Thank you so very much! Yes, if it is cheaper stick with it! They have an amazing colour range and are really awesome! It’s easier doing glazes with them as well. Holbein Acryla Gouache is designed to be used straight out of the tube whereas Turner is supposed to be diluted with water (2:1 paint water ratio). Which is just great! I made a review on Holbein, but it’s just too sticky without water despite looking runny, watered down it behaves funny.

@@MoniDmajor Hey! Sorry it took a while for me to reply. I've been all over the place lately--I'm a scatterbrain. Maybe you speak slower than other youtubers, but so what? You are probably comparing yourself to native speakers, which isn't fair to you. I actually prefer youtubers who speak more slowly; they feel more genuine to me. Your videos are actually the perfect length. I'm not sure you need to shorten them. Your videos are also very concise! You just need to believe in yourself, because your videos are very good in my opinion. And I am hard to impress, honestly. If there's any advice I'd give you for future videos, it is to be true to yourself. People in this world are starving for authenticity. Be honest about your insecurities. Be honest about your linguistic challenges. Viewers will relate more easily to you because of your honesty. As far as advice for what to talk about, I would personally like to know what German culture is like, regarding art. How do Germans receive/appreciate art? Is it a big deal in Germany? I love that youtube creates a global community, and I would love for everyone to talk about where they're from and what makes their home special, regarding art. I don't understand Russian, but I watch art videos in Russian because art is a visual language. Art brings us together! Just like right now; I am in America and I'm watching videos from an artist in Germany. How cool is that?

@@emmasheppard2639 It's preference really, they look so solid and even and the colour selection is gorgeous, but what I don't like is how sticky they feel even though they look runny, it's weird. They are great paints, but I prefer using them out of the tube for thicker layers, they don't like water as much, so you gotta work really fast and make sure they don't dry. Turner dries quickly as well but at least they are made to be mixed with water, which instantly increases the drying times

@@MoniDmajor it will kill me needing to squish the tube so hard. I think I’ll pick up a few tubes of each and see which is easiest I guess. Thank you for your advice xxx

Great video, thank you! Your reviews are maybe the best ones I've found in my search for the best acrylic gouache to order. I live in Finland so I have the same situation as you that I need to research as much as I can and then order probably from England Jackson's art supplies so I need to triple check what I am ordering so I don't waste that money and shipping. I had already my eyes on Turner acrylic gouaches and your reviews made me feel reassured and very much more informed about my choice, So a big thank you! :) Also you paint so beautifully it is just out of this world!

This made my day! Glad this helped with your decision, I do not regret getting them and some came back to tell me they are happy with them, hope this will be the case for you as well :) Greetings from Berlin to Finland!

@@MoniDmajor Thanks! :) Yes Im pretty sure I will be, a very respected finnish illustrator uses them and I kinda just stalked his video interview where he was painting like zooming in to see what he used hehe. And it was the Turner ones :)

Hey Monika, I know this is an older video but I wanted to thank you for your guidance regarding acrylic gouache. I work primarily in watercolor, ink and digital so I was not sure I would like it. I got a basic turner set (not Japanesque) and love how flat and matte the paint is, it's ideal for the clean and crisp style that I'm mostly drawn to. Also your work and editing quality and aesthetic is super gorgeous ^_^ Thanks again for the quality content.

Hey Magenta! I saw your amazing art on Instagram (I hope this was you) and let me say I am so super impressed to see how artsy you are and your skills are amazing! This comment made me so happy, I am not the most experienced and skilled artist myself, there are so many people who know a lot more about art supplies and techniques, but I try to provide as much help as I can and give something back, so hearing that my video was helpful really made my day! It’s so great you take time to give me your feedback on it, being depressed and having so much self doubts it just means so much to hear that I don’t suck 😆 I am glad you do not regret this purchase, suddenly it’s the reverse situation for me and it’s easier to get Holbein Acryla Gouache at least here in my part of the world, Turner is currently sold out all the colours I am interested in, but it definitely is the best Acryloc Gouache out there like I said in this video. It was quite the learning curve but now I have gotten used to it so much, it’s suddenly much harder for me to work in watercolours ☺️
