Tuna, I'm a retired graphic artist. I love Holbein Acrylic Gouache! I've been painting with this paint for years. I paint on Ampersand Aquabord. I use the Masterson's sta-wet handy palette. My paints stay wet for days. I'm old and slow so this helps me save colors I've mixed. If I need to save some larger amounts of mixed colors I put them in SMALL glass jars. They keep for several days that way also. Sometimes you may have to add a drop of water to these containers if they've set awhile. You can also use Berol Prismacolor pencils on top of the acrylic gouache for fine details. I was going to add a photo of a flower painting using this technique but can't add a photo here.

I love that you showed a side by side comparison like this 😍 honestly these were a lot more similar than I thought they'd be! I feel like often when you buy expensive art supplies, you're paying more for the ease of the process than the end result ❤❤

Have you done a video comparing Holbein and Turner 🤔 I have heard good things about Turner too of how it isn't as cheap as arteza but cheaper than Holbein

Thanks for this video! I didn't even know Arteza made acrylic gouache. Seems like they might need to go back to the drawing board a bit, especially with regard to opacity. I had a general thought, though. It's been my general experience with acrylic gouache (I've used Turner, Holbein, and Golden) is that the texture can vary quite a bit. Turner liquefies very fast and flows freely off the brush, whereas Holbein feels almost sticky in comparison, even with a good bit of water. Golden trends to land in between. I prefer the flow, so Turner is what I go for, but it's still just as opaque as the other two. But either way, I feel like opacity is/should be a defining characteristic of acrylic gouache, so it's sad that Arteza fell a little short there.

Neither did I - when someone mentioned it, I IMMEDIATELY purchased to see what it was like! I only have experience with Holbein, Turner, Liquitex, and Sakura - I agree there is variance across the brands, with many skewing towards that "slipperier", no-water-needed design. I prefer my Holbein 😂 I will have to check out Golden, I do like having experience with as many options as possible. Thank you for watching!!

I used arteza gouache for my Peachtober paintings this year. Once I figured out how it worked, it wasn’t too bad and the paintings came out pretty good. But i definitely noticed that some colors were more translucent and had to be mixed with white (or another neighboring color) to up the opacity

This was very interesting! I tried Arteza years ago when everyone was getting sponsored or gifted stuff from them. I got the 24 pack of watercolor tubes, and while it’s very affordable, the watercolor was really chalky and dried with a gross paper texture. The worst part is that you couldn’t reactivate the paint on the palette after it dried. I know they have other watercolor paints I could’ve tried as well, but it was really disappointing so it kinda turned me off to the whole brand.

I had the same experience with the watercolours! I feel because of the influencer marketing, the company got very big, despite the generally low quality of the materials. It’s a shame, obviously people want affordable options but at what cost?

Super-dooper interesting! Loved seeing the full painting process as a side-by-side comparison, as it gave a proper feel for how you had to work differently to account for the limitations (at least with regard to your usual technique).

Not sure if I can get this across correctly. But the Holbein cat looks more smooth and ‘level’? (Not sure that’s the correct word) where the arteza cat looks like paint on top of paint. The area I notice this most is the purple between the eyes. The arteza looks like its color on top of color where the Holbein looks more all even. I hope that makes a little sense… I LOVE these paintings too, btw!! I have a 3 legged black kitty and the Holbein one kinda looks like him!!!

I hope you donated the Arteza paints to a community center or a school or something rather than throwing them away. Lovely kitties btw

Something that isn’t immediately apparent is if you use a wet pallet (like I do) Holbein hold up the opacity super well. Arteza has a tendency to almost… split? Becomes more lie, a watercolour feel but with very chunky pigment blobs

Ah! This is what was happening as I added water to thin the paint for the whiskers!! Fascinating to hear the effect on the wet palette.

This vid was great! I have used both watercolours and acrylics, so gouache always felt like the perfect mix. I have used water-based gouache and I did not like it very much, it was very streaky and difficult to layer values, kind of like your experience with Arteza

I haven’t used it much, but I find it is a little watery for my personal taste! I like the thicker paint I can adjust myself.

I picked up pretty early on that. You did not care for the Artesa brand, have you tried turner? I have not tried acrylic glass, and am wondering if I should save for Holbein or Turner is a good beginner brand.

I love my Holbein and Turner Acryl Gouaches but I dislike Arteza Acrylic Gouache VERY much! It is SO splotchy! I have found no use for Arteza Acrylic Gouache except as fixed base layers under my Arteza regular gouache. That is it. However, I like Arteza regular designer gouache just fine for budget projects I am just practicing but while I do like Holbein and Turner regular designer Gouaches, I do not LOVE them so much that I will pay the top dollar for them. They are awesome no doubt but I like my Shinhan regular Designer Gouache just as much and they were half the price and are professional grade with good lightfast (I have 48 Shinhan colors for less than what I paid for 24 of Holbein ( both 15ml tube sets). I just can not justify that high price when others are as good at a lower price point.

Sorry, but the Holbein look so much better… the colours are way richer and vibrant… the brushstrokes are so much cleaner… the Arteza look so muddy… and while watching it felt more like a struggle… to get the colours where they’re supposed to be… 🫠
