Stay with standard Medicare if you don't want to be screwed over by the for profit insurance companies. Just pay for the standard Medicare 80% - 20% plan, then buy a supplemental insurance plan to cover the 20% Medicare doesn't cover. For profit insurance companies can simply deny services you may need. They are trying to make the MOST profit for the shareholders. Every one of you guys on an HMO plan should already know how this works.

@@SarasotaTim the key is "If you can afford $200-$250 a month for the supplement). If you have a couple of thousand in savings, you might consider a G high deductible plan ($50-$60/mo where you are) or an N plan (has small copays) for $125-$150/mo. If you can't afford either of those options then Medicare Advantage is your only decent option, but do try to put at least your plans annual maximum out of pocket in the bank just in case. I take care of my mom who has heart failure, and we live in a county in Missouri that has just 2 clinics for primary care but we live 6 miles from the Iowa border. It's so valuable for us to be able to cross the border to go to a more reputable clinic and not have to wait 6 weeks to see her PCP in this county due to a shortage of doctors. Her chiropractor is 12 miles away in Iowa, and she can see any specialist that has better care in Iowa the same distance as the nearest town within her "netowork" if she were in the advantage plan. Plus, for any catastrophic events or even broken arms, etc, all of our family resides in Iowa and not this 6 mile sliver of Missouri that an advantage plan would restrict us to. The nearest large hospital to us in Missouri is 75 miles SOUTH of us in Columbia, MO - even farther away from family. Advantage plans work well if you have a lot of choices in your area, but in a more "medical desert" in a rural area or on a state border, they might not make sense.

If you go with Medicare "Disadvantage" you're screwed. When you get older and health fails - then get denied by insurance, you CANNOT go back to Medicare!! My wife & I went with plan G... we travel and can go to ANY doctor... and it's 100% covered. Yes, it's more expensive and there's a deductible... but if you were to get cancer or catastrophic expensive illness... you won't be denied... and you'll still pay the same amount. The insurance industry bribes politicians to not allow affordable public healthcare... like 99% of the rest of the world. That's why it's SO frickin expensive!!

On the upside, right now, I still have 3 minor children and a wife who cares for them in our home. My wife and 3 daughters also get monthly money from Social Security. We receive just over $3,100 monthly and we have a bit of a side hustle but are careful to stay under the annual limit of income. Our family is currently enrolled in the affordable care act and pay no monthly premium here in Florida. Doc visits and prescriptions are nominal. I dread decisions about healthcare at 65. Maybe the Lord will return before that! 😊

The Medicare Part B premium is $164.90 in 2023. A couple of things about Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. First, they are not all zero premium. There are two basic types of MA plans - HMO plans and PPO plans. Both PPO plans have copays and what are called out of pocket maximums (a limit on total out of pocket expenses each year). The out of pocket maximum for an HMO plan can be up to $8,300 in 2023. PPO plans have the same out of pocket maximum for in network costs but can be higher for out of network costs. Note that plans can have lower out of pocket maximums. Also be aware that the out of pocket maximum for a plan does NOT include copays for drugs from the included Part D drug plan. I would recommend that you have at least one or preferably two years of your plan's out of pocket maximum in savings just in case. Both have networks, but HMO plans give you ZERO coverage outside your network with the exception of emergency treatment. PPO plans allow you to go outside your network, but the costs to you are higher both in copays and out of pocket maximums. In addition to having networks, MA plans ALWAYS require plan approval before you get expensive services or procedures. In summary, if you are healthy and don't go to doctors much or at all a Medicare Advantage HMO plan will only cost you the Medicare Part B premium, but if your health deteriorates you can end up with thousands of dollars in copays every year. Before you commit to an MA plan be sure to check out what the copays are for various services. Supplemental plans do NOT include eye exams for glasses or any dental or hearing coverage other than what is medically necessary. There are about 9-10 different supplement plans that provide different coverage. $200 is going to be near the top of what you will pay for a supplement. If you go the Medicare Advantage route in most cases if you decide to go back to original Medicare you can not get a supplement plan without going through health underwriting and potentially paying much higher premiums. If you have any health problems you will likely not be able to get a supplement plan at all. Finally, if you go with original Medicare only (no supplement plan) you are responsible for paying the 20% that Medicare doesn't pay. However, you are responsible for 20% of the Medicare approved charge not what the doctor/hospital charges. For example, I just had a prostate biopsy. It was billed at $7,900, but because the Medicare approved amount was much less than that my total responsibility was $475, not 20% of $7,900). Before I went on medicare my lifetime medical bills were about $300. Since going on Medicare my health has deteriorated and I have had more than half a million in medical bills. I am very glad I have an F supplement (not available to you young guys) that covers 100% of what Medicare doesn't pay. No copays, no deductible, nothing.
@todddunn945 Жыл бұрын
@@doninmichigan So you must be low enough income to qualify for Medicaid in Michigan. Those plans are great for low income people since they provide very good coverage. Where it gets expensive is if you have just a bit too much income to qualify for that kind of program. Then you either somehow manage to pay for a Medicare supplement plan or you go with a Medicare Advantage plan (with all its negatives). I make too much to qualify for plans like Healthy Michigan, so I had to choose between Medicare Advantage and a supplement. I chose the supplement and it has worked out well for me in that what the supplement has paid out so far is more than my premiums will be unless I make it past 95.

Hi Tim, I just stumbled onto your You Tube channel. You seem to be a straight shooter which I like and subscribed. I also am turning 65 in December, but am still working fulltime. I will sign up for Medicare part A this fall and wait on part B until I retire. We might be in good health today, but we have no idea what might happen in 5 - 10 years from now? Its all about the "what if's". The Advantage Plans seem like a low cost option as long as your remain healthy and stay in Network. Say you have back, neck, or heart problems just to name a few, down the road and may need surgery, are you now dealing with an insurance company instead of a Doctor that is deciding your options and what they will cover? That's where having a supplement part B that you pay monthly for can make sense in the long run. We are all like classic cars with high miles. We try and keep up with the maintenance and hope we have many miles left? At least we have some choices! Keep up the good videos!

Class of 76 here. Just started Medicare this month. I live in Mississippi. I got the plan N medigap. Plan G goes up 10-15% per year. Plan N average is 2-4% per year. That's why I chose plan n over plan g. My policy is $83 per month and my drug plan is $11 per month. Plan G is $122 per month. Advantage looks like a good deal until you look at the out of pocket expenses per year - About 7,700 per year in network and around 11,000 out of network compared to $226 for a plan G medigap plan. Plan N medigap plans has an additional charge of $20 copay for each doctor visit and a $50 copay for emergency room visits. Advantage also takes major health decisions out of your hands. Lets say your Doctor recommends a hip replacement. Your insurance may decide that you need to try physical therapy for a year or two instead of getting a new hip. Your insurance company makes that decision, not you or your Doctor. There's a lot of good info on KZbin, but when it came time to purchase a policy, I went to a local agency that specializes in Medigap and Advantage plans for retirees. I had all my questions written down, and they took their time and explained all my options. This is one of the most important decisions you'll ever make, so take your time and make sure you have all your questions answered. My opinion is that the medigap plans are a much better and less risky plan. But again, that's just my opinion. There's a reason Medicare only allows you to get a medigap plan the first year with no questions asked. Good luck getting a medigap plan after the first year.

You'd make a good Salesman for an Advantage plan! It's just that you don't have all the information correct - as Salesmen for Advantage Plans often do not, either. If you trade in your Original Medicare for an Advantage Plan, you not only have to work within a network, but you give them the right to deny coverage if the treatment plan is not profitable for them. With Original Medicare, only your doctor can make that decision. Adding a Supplement (or Medigap Plan) is totally your choice. Supplements do not include Hearing/Dental/Vision coverage under Medicare, but the 20% cost above what Medicare pays is covered. By the way, even Advantage Plans require that the $165/month premium be paid. There will be a time in your life that $400/month will seem cheap. As medical costs rise, that is just reality. Choose wisely. It's hard to switch back if you make a mistake!
@MrStan0630 Жыл бұрын
There’s some risks with Medicare Advantage. You can only see a specialist by referral from your primary care doctor. The insurance company may not approve a certain test or procedure that your doctor recommends. If you move, there is a good chance you will need a new plan, and’s you will have to have the new company review your medical records before they accept you.

READ THE COMMENTS BELOW and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH On Medicare. DO NOT blindly take advice on medicare without doing THROUGH research and understanding it. Healthcare is COMPLICATED. My mother was on a Healthcare plan (Humana) and MANY nurses I spoke to (In South Florida) advised me at that time to get her back on Medicare. I still to this day have a difficult time understanding it all but I believe the reason to STAY on Medicare is you are not limited to a particular Doctor or which procedures are covered. When you use one of those other plans, you have to stay IN NETWORK and use only certain doctors. In other words....you are LIMITED. For some this may not be a concern. For others it very well could be. When the time comes, I will stay on Medicare and Buy a Supplement to cover the other expenses. NOTHING IS AS IT SEEMS ANYMORE.

It’s the luxury plan but those that need every dollar they got the advantage plan offers more than standard Medicare, and the network is huge. I wouldn’t be concerned about that, especially South Florida Maybe other regions it’s not, but it’s not that complicated you have a choice 1,2, or 3 😎

@@desireerailine8220ike he said “if you can afford it”. I will be turning 65 in a few years and don’t know what to do. Paying almost 400 a month would kill me, couldn’t afford it

A Medicare supplement or medical plan along with original Medicare is way way better than an advantage plan. Watch Chris Westfall an independent insurance broker. On the advantage plan if you get really sick and need outpatient treatment ongoing for day like cancer or wet age macular degeneration the deductible is like 7,000 dollars each year. Those private insurance companies deny people treatment and you need referrals and they control everything.

Also all doctors are not the same just because they went to medical school! Some are much smarter and know what to do with situations more than others and some are neglectful and don't catch something until it's too late and I know this from someone who this happened to. I have a job that I had to be licensed for as well as everyone else that I work with but I can tell you some of us are better at our jobs than others much better!

Advantage costs 0 premium but if you have anything it costs $5k deductible. A supplement G or N costs nothing but the premium with a $200 deductible with no copays or co-insurance. When you want to change to a G plan later you will have to be underwritten and you probably won't be able to change because you're old and have problems.

Keep in mind...Regardless of the profession, someone had to graduate AT THE BOTTOM of the class. So remember that when choosing your Doctors...The "COVID" BS brought that to the forefront when I showed up to my Doctors and some were pushing the useless masks. I dropped them immediately.
@bigjohnson7415 Жыл бұрын
Amen to that! I've always said that not everyone, including Doctors graduated at the top of the class!

I could be mistaken but the EXTRA's provided in the Advantage Plan may be limited. So a patient who needs use of a service beyond 1x maybe disappointed to find that the Advantage plan extra's could be seen more as an enticement to get people to go on the plan. I found that when speaking to a representative for my Medicare coverage that they are very persistent to promote the Advantage plan over the other offerings of coverage. Of course, I am a bit suspicious of any government promotion that gives the impression that you get more for less and the time is NOW to become a member. Government and Enticements are not necessarily an Advantage when it comes to medical coverage and your future needs. Do your research.

You will still need to pay the $170 when on an Advantage plan. Just no extra for the Advantage plan.

Please note. Our lousy politicians (especially the GOP) are raising the age you can get SS and Medicare. They are also trying to cut the benefits you will receive!

Advantage plan is not Medicare😂.. Recently their where some politicians trying to Pass a bill stating the truth and trying taking the term “Medicare” out of the Advantage. A,B,D and G is the best decision.
