I stumbled across yours and others pen turning videos. I know of only one person locally that does this. Was not able to get into detail at the time and was only slightly interested when the subject came up. I believe I may have found a new hobby. As with any venture, one has to do their homework. I have an art background and some what mechanical. My experience with lathes has been minimal. I think what really caught my eye was what can be done with resin and in combination with wood. My family will probably say, "great another hobby". Thanks Looking forward to more.

Isn't that just STUNNING! My husband and I are looking at various methods for finishing. We've been using a friction polish over a sanding sealer and while it's nice, the shine achieved varies from pen to pen and all the while, I know that friction polish doesn't last. I've tried CA polishing but haven't used any specific method. Now that I'm looking at your finishing method, it looks great and we're going to go ahead and get some buffing wheels and get One-Step Plastic Polish too. My husband just began watching your videos and pointed them out to me, saying, "I really like this guy's videos!" And you know, I have to agree with him! ;D He was watching a video you made in 2014 detailing your CA polishing process. I mentioned that you now use buffing wheels, and looked for a recent wood pen turning video to show Steve how you'd updated the way you do things. (BTW, you might consider adding a note to your 2014 video to point people to your more current finishing video :D) I have to say, the shine you get on your pens is totally spectacular! Incidentally, I do have a question for you. At one point you moved over to using buffing wheels with rouge...I don't see a specific video talking about this addition to your process, but it would be nice to see what you have to say about it. Also, I wanted to ask, have you ever tried dipping polish? This looks really fantastic and the process seems pretty easy to do...here's a link if you would like to see: www.penturners.org/forum/f13/tempest-cocinnia-burl-149779/ (I think your method yields at least the same quality of shine though, so perhaps it's not worth investigating.)

My grandmother had this beautiful cabinet made from a red cedar tree that was on her parents property when she was little. That cabinet stayed with her, her whole life. When she passed, my dad and uncle cut it in half with a chainsaw to remove it from her house, then brought the pieces to me and asked if I could fix it. I proposed turning it into 4 small trunks that each could have, which they agreed to. The smaller unused pieces I'm using for pen blanks and they are absolutely gorgeous! Every family member will receive/cherish these pens. It was a pity to lose the original cabinet but what's done is done. Silver lining. ...

@RJBWoodTurner7 жыл бұрын
+Chris Thank you Chris, I'm glad my videos have helped. With Thin, it usually dries in about 30 seconds. I use it as a sanding sealer almost. It soaks into the wood and solidifies the fibers. After several coats, usually 5 for me, probably don't need that many, I switch to medium. Medium takes several minutes to dry so I always have something else lined up like blanks to drill or cut so I go do that. I start with three coats of Medium then check the blank for a smooth level surface. If there are any indentions from grain I apply more until they are gone. Once level, I micro mesh the finish. Regards, Bob

Your videos are very instructive, and I enjoy your patient delivery. in a future video, would you show how you sharpen your pen reamers? How to deal with the situation when CA gets into the inside of the brass tube and prevents the blank from sliding on the mandrel? How to deal with a brass tube that gets stuck part way into the blank while gluing it in ? I always bevel the inside edges of both sides of the tube as insurance against binding when pressing in the pen kit parts...I've had acrylic and wood blanks crack when not doing that. I've started turning blanks without the center busing, and always get perfect alignment of the two pen blank centers.

@RJBWoodTurner7 жыл бұрын
+Chris Hello Chris, It could be that the blank had some moisture in it and the heat from the C/A curing caused it to surface. Also, if you use Activator it can cause this to happen as well as cracks in the surface of the pen. I try to avoid Activator on all but the last coat. Even then I wait several minutes before applying it. I hope this helps. Regards, Bob

I think that is Juniper Bob. Juniper smells like cedar. The wood you have is not red enough. I got a ton of cedar from trees that were knocked down from the last hurricane. It is still too wet to use reading 30% on a moisture meter. I have cut it into boards to speed up drying. Some of it is figured and that makes amazing pens. Your pen is awesome, now I have to go find some juniper. Cedar is hard to turn as it is relatively soft and wants to blow apart just about the time you get to the bushing. I have about a 30% failure rate.
@beehappywoodworkingandhone4397 жыл бұрын

RJBWoodTurner not a problem. juniper is in the cedar genises. simalar properties. the oil and the smell. it's hard to tell the difference. the only give away I could find was the twisting of the wood. juniper has graining simalar to sweetgum. it twists as it grows.

So did you find that you did not need to stabilize the cedar before you cut up a piece for turning?
@RJBWoodTurner3 жыл бұрын
Got lucky and in this case I didn’t have to stabilize it. Regards, Bob
@leselym14073 жыл бұрын
New to turning. How do you know if you need to stabalize the wood or if you can just go for it? Does it need to be completely dried or 6-9% moisture content ok?
@johnhuggins50213 жыл бұрын
@@leselym1407 Hi, I'm no expert at stabilizing wood yet (but I will be in time since I now have the equipment), but some woods such as cedars tend to be what many call "punky," or so soft and full of air holes inside that experts strongly recommend you stabilize (harden it with acrylic material under pressure) the wood before you turn it. The reason is that as you turn woods that have a lot airy holes in them - especially soft woods like cedar - you could "blow out" chunks of wood as you turn it and carve into it with your turning tools. Which woods are more punky than others? To be honest, there are websites that can explain it much better than me. Suffice it to say if you google "How to stabilize wood for woodturning" or "What woods should be stabilized before woodturning them?" you will find lots of interesting KZbin videos on the subject. It's really not hard, but it does require a small investment in a pressure tank and other ancillary equipment. And it's an interesting subject that is important for us woodturners and woodturner wannabees like me and possibly you to understand. Afterall, you don't want chunks of soft (or hard) wood flying up at you any more than absolutely necessary. LOL.
@leselym14073 жыл бұрын
@@johnhuggins5021 thanks! Not quiet ready to go that far in to investing in the equipment for stabilizing. You did clear it up some for me though.
@johnhuggins50213 жыл бұрын
@@leselym1407 What makes stabilizing punky wood is that you can find some really cool patterns in woods that otherwise might not work well when turning; or worse.... you ruin an otherwise beautifully unique piece of wood that would really make a nice project - whether it's a pen, a bowl, or some other item that you want to create by turning it. Making sure the wood is stable for turning at high speed, though is key. And suffice it to say, some woods are naturally better at it than others, but not necessarily as wicked looking once they are made safe to turn. Hence.... the importance of stabilizing. Happy woodturning!
