Hey Bob! I know this is a month old but would you be interested in organizing a pen swap sometime this year?
@RJBWoodTurner3 күн бұрын
Hello Brent, Thank you, but I respectfully have to decline. I get several requests every month to do pen swaps. I would love to do them all but I just don’t have the time. I haven’t made a personal or a video pen for several months, too little shop time and more than a little burned out at the moment. A few years back I did a pen swap and I got bombarded by people. I tried to do as many as I could but the requests were overwhelming. I had turned many people down and ended up losing friends and followers over it. It’s such a fun thing to do but if I do one that opens the door for many more. I hope you understand. Regards, Bob

Love watching you and I sure learn how to make pen turning easier? I especially like your Atlas lathe but mine was a wood lathe. I had one that I rebuilt and used for 15 years or so. It was given to me when my father-in-law died. After rebuilding it I gave it to my brother-in-law who happens to be the wood shop teacher at Aspen Colorado high school. I then rebuilt my Delta wood lathe and that is the one I use now. BTW I feel your pain regarding the excessive heat. I live in Mesa AZ and have had two of my citrus trees die recently. I have one of the portable a/c’s on wheels that I roll into my shop in the summer. WHEW! I hope to get back to AWAT in 2025. Love going there and meeting other turners. Hope to see you there this year, if you will be there?

i realize this video is a year old now, but ive been watching a bunch of these recently, and i have a few questions. first, i notice a lot of videos ive been watching (they may have all been from this channel, didnt really pay attn) say to use a m13x.8 tap and die. i con only find m13x1 and m13x.75. yes, i KNOW it wont make a difference in teh grand scheme of things, but this prompted me to check the link in your info and the "m13x.8" set you link goes to an amazon page of a complete tap and die set, which just so happens to only go up to m12. is the .8 pitch a specialty thing? ive been looking at some jinho 100 replacement nibs, but it doesnt specify what thread they are. i didnt catch you mentioning what nibs you used, and there is no link to them in the description. i want to make sure i can get the correct sized tap before i spend on nibs/feeds. also, on the subject of taps, iirc it was a 7.5x.4 in the video? another odd size. all amazon has is a 1mm and .5mm pitch. where do you go for your specialty taps? even my machine tap supplier only has sae special thread taps, and i daresnt request a quote on a custom made metric tap, as im sure i wont like the numbers coming back.
@RJBWoodTurner13 күн бұрын
Hello, The M13.8 tap and die I refer to in the video has triple start threads. When you start out you can use a standard tap and dye to practice and learn. If you start selling these pens you will want to use triple start. Example why: let’s say it takes 3 full revolutions of the cap to secure it onto the body. With triple start, it will only take 1. This is preferred by the people who pay serious money for custom pens. The .8 in M13.8 refers to the pitch of the threads. Once again you can use anything when you are learning and practicing but the finer threads will give your pen a much cleaner finish. The M13.1 & M13.75 on Amazon are just standard single start taps and dies. You use to have to participate in a group buy on IAP.com to get these items but Chad at Turners Warehouse carries them. Here is a link to a Google drive where I list the tools in detail that I use to make my Bespoke pens. drive.google.com/drive/folders/1S1ucE-e2IF50FhYoSh8mkLDhLD0gTnn0 There are two lists, one for Bespoke on a Budget which is to get you started without having to spend all the money up front. It allows you to learn the process and techniques on common cheap tools. Over time you can upgrade your tools to improve your pens and the same processes will apply. I have several videos on this topic as well on my channel here is the link to a play list: kzbin.info/aero/PLd8OGJeP3PxmPnL4pzwBqeDheKCENtnId&si=WdFC1wa1ftMPB8c6 There is also a Bespoke Tool Listing on the Google drive which has all of the info on the actual tools I use to make my Bespoke pens. They are pricey… The play list also has all of my Bespoke videos. Regarding nibs: I don’t know anything about Jinho nibs, never heard of them. Contact the manufacturer for details about threads and diameter to determine the proper tab needed. I use Jowo #6 nibs and get them from Turners Warehouse, they are listed in the Bespoke document. The 7.5-4 tap is specific to the Housing and thread pattern of the Jowo #6. I also get these from Turners Warehouse. If they’re out of stock, contact them for when they expect to get more, their customer service is excellent. They also sell other nibs but you will need to make sure you purchase the proper specialty tab for the specific nib you are using. You will also need to use the proper drill bits and drill to the proper depths. Chad can help with the above. He not only sells the stuff, he is an excellent turner himself who makes Bespoke pens. He uses what he sells and will be an excellent source of knowledge about turning them and the tools required. I hope the information helps you. Regards, Bob

@@RJBWoodTurner ive made kit pens YEARS ago, and have been a woodworker and metalworker usning lathes for decades, so i do have most of the tools needed, but i am just getting back into pen turning, and if these kitless pens were a thing back in teh day, i never heard of them, so this is all very new to me. the tap and die being triple start makes sense. the nibs and feeds i found on amazon, because i didnt really have any suppliers for this (i didnt buy them yet). i'm going to check out the google drive lists for these specialty taps and the nibs. this was a BIG help. thank you!

Since the shelves are attached with screws to the 4x4 post, we unbolt them and store them separately. The post unbolts from the base making is east to move and not need that much space to store. I am currently upgrading our shelf. After all the years of service, it is showing some ware and we are getting rid of the metal shelf braces and adding wooden corbels. Regards, Bob

My issue seems to be something different. There wasn't anything wrong with any of the connections there, they were tight (mine is a type 1 and in fact the nut on the short eccentric arm was staked). My knocking sound seems to be coming from the upper arm assembly, when the 'speed' setting is above 4.
@RJBWoodTurnerАй бұрын
I haven’t experienced that. I hope you’re able to figure it out. Regards, Bob
@fredmeyer3063Ай бұрын
@@RJBWoodTurner Turns out it was the outermost part of the upper arm. There is a housing 'top piece' that was banging into another part at speeds above setting 5. I had to file it down; from Google research it is an issue that some owners have to deal with. I also shortened the tension rod by 1 turn because the upper clamp seemed to be grabbing the blade too low. Now it seems to work well although it still vibrates more around speed setting 6-ish.
@RJBWoodTurnerАй бұрын
Great fix, thank you for explaining it here. Lots of people read the comments and maybe this will help someone.
@kevindflowers234Ай бұрын
Do you turn the blank the same day as you glue it up? Do you wait 24 hours, and the glue holds strong enough to do multiple glue ups the same day, but you wait before you turn it? Using CA glue, even BSI, my pieces are "shrapneling" during center drilling and turning.... I've been using 2-part epoxy for everything but if there's multiple glue ups or complex glue ups, it's taking a day for each step and just seems like there has to be a better way.
@RJBWoodTurnerАй бұрын
Epoxy is better. You can give it a little time to tack up and hold then perform additional glue ups. I always like to wait overnight before drilling and turning.
