Greetings! I am a 68 yearold "new turner," literally at the point of making shavings for my wife's chicken coop. I have a 1960's Craftsman lathe that came with the original spur chuck and face plate. I have seen several turners doing projects where they used waste blocks and a face plate instead of a chuck... yet I have never found a video showing how to actually install the waste block. Thank you for the helpful teaching!

Always good to get back to basics, Sam. There are probably thousands of woodworkers out there with a midi lathe and no chuck that can be inspired to turn a small bowl without one.

Great video! Just a little hack that My high school shop teacher taught me 50 years ago take a brown paper bag and cut out a circle the same diameter of the waste block put glue on both sides of the paper glueing it to the bowl bottom letting it get good and wet or saturated then glue on the glue block clamp it like you did with the tail stock after drying put on your face plate and you are good to go after turning your bowl leave on the head stock take a sharp chisel bevel side to the block and tap the chisel until the block come free from the bowl put a towel under the bowl on the lathe bed just in case the bowl comes off completely all my years I've only had a couple come off completely the rest are held on the bowl simply pry the block off then sand the bottom of the bowl and you are done! It sounds like a lot of work but it's simple and saves time and I have never had a bowl come off prematurely yet in 50 +years my shop teacher was a wonderful guy he taught me so much that I used my whole life as a retired contractor and cabinet maker having my own cabinet shop his past on information has served me well in Life thank you Harvey Leighton ! May you rest in peace Sir! PS don't recess the waste block glue the entire surface of it !

When you called your last video “notes from the turning shop”, was that a reference to “notes from the underground” by Dostoyevsky? I wouldn’t expect that reference in a woodworking video. Great video either way!

Excellent video, Sam. This is the best face plate advice I have seen. One word of caution though, when tightening the lag screws with a drill driver; I always do the last of the tightening by hand to prevent strip-out. Happy New Year to Cheryl & you!

Sam, very helpful. I like the idea of using the extra face plates, I’ve struggled with leaving enough wood for tenons to finish my projects. Your way will take a little longer, but that’s OK, it gives you more options. Did you use pine for your waste blocks? That’s for all your videos. Roger D.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 2 жыл бұрын
Roger, thanks for watching my video. I don't believe I have any pine in my shop. I am sure this is poplar. I buy poplar in long, 2" thick planks. It is really cheap and last a long time. One more thing, I always use them in a cross-grain orientation. Sam

I was taught to glue the waste block to the workpiece with a sheet of newspaper between them. Then when you want to remove the block, you place a chisel at the joint and the paper splits. Some light sanding removes the paper residue from your work. Would this not work?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 3 жыл бұрын
I am not a fan of this approach. Worst case......the paper does not allow for a good bond and the bowl separates from the waste block. I think the original intent was that the two pieces of wood would come apart easily. I think this is a better approach for a spindle. I will talk about this in my January Notes from the turning shop video. But a very important question. Thanks Sam

Is the finish you used food safe? Thanks for sharing
@DerekCadmus
@DerekCadmus 3 жыл бұрын
All finishes are food safe once cured. If you are looking for one that is food safe right out of the can, try shellac, Mahoney’s walnut oil, velvit oil or Odie’s oil. With the exception of shellac which is a surface finish, these are all polymerizing oil’s which dry in the wood vs something like mineral oil which would not dry at all and may leave a residue

@tjraymer

Yes I saw another video where a guy did a small plate using hot glue for the glue block but haven’t seen anyone else do it
@bassrun101
@bassrun101 3 жыл бұрын
@@tjraymer Garry not Linda. Mike Waldt uses hot glue a lot. I believe Mike Peace does also. If you have a high temp glue gun and high temp glue sticks you should be fine. If you don't have a high temp gun I would check with one of the tool suppliers like Woodcraft, Woodturner's Wonders, Rockler or someone like that and they should have one that fills the bill. Having said that it's time I take my own advice. I have an older industrial unit by Parker that is going to die one of these days. It has started to leak where the stick goes into the heater. It now takes a very long time to get warmed up to the point where it's useable.

Greg, I paid $9 for shipping. Yea, I would not pay $30 for shipping. That is a big problem with EBAY. Here is the link to my purchase. www.ebay.com/itm/402487876874 I will mention this in my next "Notes" video. I have paid upwards of $30 for ONE role of tape. So I was happy with $12. Could you not just glue the waste block onto your piece and then mount the faceplate eliminating having to use 2 faceplates. That way you only have to true up your turning once and still have enough access to round the bottom of your bowl.
@NitFlickwick

You need a way to flatten the blank for that to work. If you have a jointer or are comfortable with hand planes, it would definitely work.

OK you caught me- although at 23:29 into the video I did mention, apologetically, that I was using a scroll chuck with the crew center.
