Don't use mineral spirits, use acrylics and make washes! 1 : 1 Acrylic Fluid Medium to Water + Acrylic ink for desired strength. Look for the consistency of 2% milk. You can also add some drops of flow aid if its not washy-enough. Use acrylic paint instead of ink for a thicker, but less pigmented wash.

To safe your sculpture against painting mistakes, something a lot of miniature painters use, that should be applicable to project like this as well, is to layer on varnish. In minis, this is usually done after the clean paint is on, before using weathering effects, but it should work just as fine straight onto the baked clay, before paint. That way, if you're unhappy with your paint job, you can strip it off without damaging the underlying material. I would also recommend using acrylic paint, as it's easier to strip off than enamels, and requires less aggressive chemicals if you want to strip it.
