Turning a Figured Cocobolo & Hedge Duck Call

This is a step-by-step video of how a duck call is turned on a lathe. Cocobolo and Hedge woods were used. And, stippling was added to both barrel and insert for a decorative effect.

That is true craftsmanship. Is that a screwdriver your using to cut the lanyard ring?

I started making calls just a few weeks ago. Love your videos I have learned so much. Can I ask "only because you do not show it" do you use an insert or do you make your own board? If you do what jig do you prefer for board making? Thank you and hello from Michigan.

Thanks, Erik. I’m glad you like the videos. I do make my own inserts and toneboards. I initially developed my toneboard shape by freehand. I then made a wooden jig that I used for a few years. I currently use a PJ1 public jig from Webfoot Game Calls. I picked it because it was close to my wooden jig shape. I use the jig to cut my toneboards and then freehand file them down to my original shape. Public jigs are a good starting point but aren’t designed to give you a final toneboard. I may try to make a video about cutting and tuning inserts.

@@bayoulegacy Thank you so much for the response. The few calls I have made I purchased a jc 100 insert from woodturners catalog. I would love to see a video on making your own tone board or a video on making your own jig. Thank you keep up the great content.

Bayou Legacy Game Calls Awesome! I’m just starting into making calls, and have a lot to learn. I’ve been using mainly tung oil. I tried doing a CA finish on one, but the plastic fake feel isn’t my favorite; I like feeling the grain of the wood. Beautiful work you do, definitely subscribing!

What size lathe is that and how does your drill chuck fit?

It’s an 8x12 mini lathe. It’ll turn a piece of wood up to 8” in diameter and 12” long. The drill chuck has an MT1 taper that fits into the tail stock.

Why do you use teak oil as opposed to a linseed oil or other oil? I’m also just starting out to make one for a friend. Mostly I turn pens so this is something fun to learn. Thanks!

Linseed oil is also a great finish for calls. I use teak oil because it’s easy to apply, dries relatively quick, and has proven to be extremely durable when exposed to the elements. Teak oil also has a small amount of lacquer which helps to build a nice satin sheen on the wood.

Beautiful. Do you give the cocobolo any special treatment before applying the finish? I have used it a couple times but it seems the sap keeps leaching through the finish

Thanks, Ryan. No special treatment done prior to the oil finish. Cocobolo is an oily wood to begin with so it may be the natural oils you’re seeing coming through. What kind of finish were you using?
