When turning acrylic, I don't bother with the CA glue and continue on with sanding thru to a 12,000 grit and applying water at the same time. The finish on the acrylic comes out like glass and saves you from the CA ordeal with ridges and cacking around with that. Great video by the way.

Good video...one of the best. I sand the tube with 150 grit and wipe with a paper towel and acetone to remove any oils, fine particles, etc. I was pondering using the skew for the final dimensions. Thanks for the demo. I also made a tool from HDPE to insert the glued tube. No-stick bushings from the HDPE, too. I tried MM but the CA gummed up the grits and wouldn't wash off. More water? Thanks.

Is there any alternative to using a barrel trimmer? Would sanding the blank down be ok?
@CraftSuppliesUSA5 жыл бұрын
You can sand it, but make sure you're sanding on a square surface. Keep in mind that barrel trimmers will clear out any excess glue in the tube and sanding can't solve that problem.

Is there another way to clear the excess glue from the tubes without a barrel trimmer? Would pushing it out using a skinny tool be enough?

Why does Mike's voice sound deeper in different parts of the video?

Mike got a cold and we shot this over multiple days, so when he got sick his voice sounded different. 😒

I am just staring at lathe turning but all the cuts are scraps, no planning cuts. Maybe I am to new but that was to much sanding. I hate sanding. Very cool video, I am excited to try and make some pens someday.

What sanding is the best part

Sanding is the most relaxing and productive part.

Sanding in any type of woodworking is time consuming yet where a great woodworker can learn to shine😊. It makes a huge difference in the finished product. I am just returning to woodworking after many years away and can’t wait to see the progress time has made. I have never heard of CA glue as a finish for instance. I don’t even know how that is a finish.
@wartlme Жыл бұрын
@@4acrehobbytfarm If you know how to use a lathe and your tools, you can get a better finish with a blade over sanding. Sanding is a cheat.

Very nice result. But pretty dangerous. If you spin too fast while aplying CA it will find your eye for sure ...

Agreed. Keep the speed low and always wear eye protection!

Good video but “traditional tools”? Not all the tools you used!
