Great video. Thanks. I have a dozen or more 1/2x1/8" rare earth magnets with a center hole. They have been sitting around for a couple of years with no further use. I had purchased a lot of them for another project. Now they have a use. I appreciate the good camera work and the clarity of your demo.

I have about 200 pen blank pieces, i think I will try to turn some of these as little Christmas presents or something. Thanks for the video!

I made dozens of these a couple years ago. They are so much fun & useful, too. Everyone needs fridge magnets. Great way to use up small scraps of nice wood.

@9inety9, one thing I failed to mention in the video is that I make one magnet jig for the "re-chucking" and use it to turn the tops of multiple magnets. I have done it both ways, but using the magnetic "chuck" allows me to apply the friction polish to the top as it is spinning on the lathe which gives a much nicer surface and gloss than applying by hand. Also, for me, turning to a small diameter then sanding the entire mushroom is a much more delicate operation which results in more breakage.

@pojotyler Mylands is a good product for what it is, a quick finish. The gloss is good and if you build it up using two or three applications, the finish appears to be deep. I use it on pens as well, and it seems to be durable.

What is the chuck that you are using in this video?

Leah, sorry for the late reply. It's a Oneway Talon with "pin" jaws.

@mrbyarshall, Yes, this is a great use for those little bits and pieces left over from making other projects. Thanks for commenting. Chas

what kind of grind do you have on your spindle gouge? I like it and would like to reproduce it. Any more info would be great.

You could have sanded 99% before you parted off and saved a magnet, nice video though
