Everything is ok just handle dont you think its a bit too round small diameters of hanle is too small and round so to control the edge of the knife since its realy sharp it must have bigger and lighter handle

Quick ask as a newbie but the heating at the start was to “untemper” it ?!?!
@leor2830
@leor2830 4 жыл бұрын
A file is hardened upwards of 50HRC,, it is quite hard. The operation at the start was to back temper in , it was basically annealed ( only as hard as the steel's chemical composition) He then proceeds to remove metal whilst still in the "soft" sate, and, then he re-hardens it ( raises the steel above approx 850C and quench in oil. However,, he continues to make the knife with the material still in the "as sequenced hardness ( at a guess approx 60 HRC ) . What I don't see him do is to temper the "knife" to a reduced hardness - heat to about 250 - 300C and allow to slow cool in oven / furnace. Because of all of thesis, the knife is very brittle, and, the edge will chip ( if not entirely break / crack ) if subjected to any impact - like chopping at wood / bone . Hope this helps

That was Normalizing process for steel.
@leor2830
@leor2830 4 жыл бұрын
@@metalhurts1635Whilst I am not a metallurgist ( but only a "humble" Mechanical Engineer ), Normalising process is when the item is slow cooled OUTSIDE the furnace in still air ( to refine the grin structure ). In the video, it is allowed to cool INSIDE the furnace ( whilst it still has latent heat ) - this is annealing and it serves to soften the material back to it's "as rolled" condition.

I gave you a thumbs down because ( like in the other video I saw) , you do not show the knife being tempered after hardening it - the materiel is still in the as quenched hardness and subject to brittle failure.
