Great work. Just cut out and shaped a blade from an old circular saw blade yesterday. Took forever but it looks pretty good. Still have to drill the handle and make some nice handle scales and hopefully it'll come out nice.

Many of us are quick to point out our flaws, it is KZbin after all and if you don't, someone else will. But be proud of the fact you made that knife. Most men don't have the knowledge or skill to make things with their bare hands, especially when it comes to repurposing. Great job.

Hi Jimbo, you did really great on the knife making. I actually really like how you made the knife. Knife turned out great! I am actually planning making knives myself with no power tools, and all by hand. All i know is that it’s ok if your knife doesn’t turn out perfect, at least if your happy the way it turn out then that’s good! And i am also planning on making knives with maybe only saw blades. You should do more of knife making videos, you did great!

You did great, Chief, considering that you went for a fairly advanced and more complex knife design after only one previous project, lol. And it's a perfectly functional and practical knife design, good for slashing and chopping meat and kindling.

A couple of things. I made my first few knives with a B+D “PowerFile” (12mm - 1/2” belt, you can get air powered versions). Does a great job with curvy blades. To make the metal hold an edge (the whole point of a knife) you need to quench and temper it. Essentially heat the metal until glowing cherry red, and then dunk it in a suitable quench fluid (most likely an oil like Parkes for this project, each steel will have a specific quench agent you need to research), this is the Quench process. The blade will then be very hard, but VERY brittle, so don’t drop it. You need to temper it for two 1 hour sessions in an oven at 100’c / 210’f. This will take out the brittle nature, leaving you with a blade that can hold an edge.

Nice work Jimbo! You need to soften the hard steel saw blade first to work it by putting it in a forge or a heat treat oven and slowly cool it down afterwards so it won't crack. Then it will be a lot easier to cut and remove all the scratches. And when you're done you need to harden the steel again.

It's a nice knife that you ended up making there. I've done the same thing I've made knives out of angle iron and saw blades. I typically use (ipe) wood for the handle. It's an extremely dense wood from South America. Mainly Brazil. It's difficult to work with but looks great when you're done

You now have a Texan size letter opener :-) B.T.W. the padauk will turn brown on the surface as it ages, a quick sanding returns the orangy color.
@jameswilliams50156 жыл бұрын
Sir the reason the blade wouldn’t hold an edge is because you needed to temper the metal. What I mean is hear the metal till it is glowing red and dip it in motor oil and then you need to bake it after that. This will hardened the metal and it will hold an edge

I think a hot blue with a torch before you did the handles would have really added to it, would have gone great with that wood too in my opinion but I'm a welder not a knife maker, might try this out though, time consuming but a very straight forward project.

I've worked with padauk on my wood lathe making pens. I like it, but I advise the use of a respirator, because breathing the dust is like inhaling chili powder. maybe that's just my reaction to it since dust from exotic wood affects people differently.

Thanks for watching Andrew, I agree the dust is fine. Jimbo!

Don’t know if its been suggested yet. You should take the other saw blade you have, clean it up a bit, mount some pins or something and turn it into a display holder for your knife. BTW I think the knife turned out great. I’m a woodworker and have a ton of old 12” miter blades and am trying my hand at making one now!!
@williamdunn25257 жыл бұрын
Great video Jimbo. Never seen a knife made out of a saw blade before. PS theres a diamond cut off wheel at lowes for 15 bucks called Lenox . Little pricey but worth the life of 100 cut off abrasives and goes through tool steel like butter. Best regards.

For the bevels, you could have used a 60 grit flap disc. That would have been able to get around the tight curves.
