Sam turns a small Ash container: spirit form. He takes you through the steps in making this small box and pays homage to the spirit within every work made by hand and heart.

Sam: I could not help but notice how much you use scrapers. I like to use them but have a devil of a time getting the burr correct. Do you have a preferred way to sharpen scrapers?

I really like the shape and wood of your box. I always find it difficult to get minimal jaw marks on the boxes when gripping them by the base. It looks like yours was all good.

True oil is a brand name for a gun stock finish. I just bought some and started using it lately. I like it a lot thanks, Sam.

Well done, both your video and the box. Curious, why the choice of the tenon on the lid vs the body? Most all videos and books I read have the tenon on the base.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
Eric You are very observant.... First the base-I intended to NOT put a tenon on the bottom but chuck it up directly in my 3 inch jaws. (This is a Richard Raffan approach). This worked very well. On to the top: I sometimes chuck and rechuck and reverse chuck an element in a project. I put a tenon on the lid where I eventually put the handle detail. It may seem I have extra steps in a project but perhaps it is just how I do things. I put an area (expansion recess) on the underside of the lid as well. When turning one must look forward and anticipate turning each element. Thanks for watching my videos. Sam

Is this one of the exceptions for using a spindle gouge on cross grain work?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER Жыл бұрын
I don’t feel there are hard and fast rules about using or not using a spindle gouge on Cross grain work. Watch Richard Raffan’s videos and he turns bowls, and everything else with the Spindle gouge.
