@joescarborough18 жыл бұрын
+Stephen Johnson There are companies in the USA selling Milliput so you don't have to pay to ship across the pond. Other alternatives-some think better-are made in the US. Ten minutes search reveals several and you don't have to wait for Carl to make a platter.
@MrYingvar8 жыл бұрын
I searched and fell short. Alternatives I found had very short working time, which is not compatible with this method. Did not find US retailer for Milliput. Perhaps you could post the link you found?

+Stephen Johnson Don't know if you have access or not, but Amazon ships four grades of Milliput from the US to the US. As far as finding the alternatives think sculpting-particularly star cruisers and battleships, war gaming miniatures, museum fossil displays and a bazillion other fields that use sculpting epoxy. Brand wars have been waged just like Coke/Pepsi, Ford/Chevrolet &c.

Thank you very much Sivadasan. Yes, once I cut and sand the putty back , I re apply sanding sealer to the wood and putty and re-polish. great vid thanks, 1 thing id like to suggest though is it might be better to do the inlay as 1 long strip as opposed to 4x quarters as it would be easy to have duplication of stripe thicknesses every 1/4 turn, maybe use a rolling pin also or an old mangle when making the squares ;) very nice work and i would easy buy the large bowl from you if I would have the money left over to put in it ;)
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Many thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I'm glad you like it. Milliput is very sticky and is difficult to roll out, it can be done if placed between sheets of baking parchment, but for most of my projects I am trying to achieve a more random/organic look. It does tend to crush rather unevenly when you cut it, so the stripes will tend to distort. All the best, Jim.

No probs mate keep up the good work :) Ive only recently bought an old axminster wvsl from 2003 and only turned 2 items so far and I do enjoy it, especially when I sharpen the chisels, the centers are only about 4 1/2 above the bed though so when I get a lot better Ill be looking at either buying a new one or making a single spindle bench end mounted one :) needless to say Ill be trying out milliput fairly soon ive just got to get the actual lathing good first :)
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Hobster . you will get the hang of it in no time. All my turning is done on a Jet mini lathe. I am getting a much bigger lathe soon, just waiting for Axminster to get it in. All the best, Jim
@Freefallpilot658 жыл бұрын
Question Jim. I just inlaid a bowl with the superfine white and it was terribly sticky when packing the putty down into the recess. Yours doesn't seem to stick to your fingers when applying it to these bowls. Did you let it sit a bit to get to the rubbery stage before you applied it? I have a good seal and wax on the bowl so I went ahead and dampened my fingers just a tad to keep it from sticking with no fear of it bleeding into the grain of the wood. Thanks in advance, Kurt.
@JimsonMakes8 жыл бұрын
Hello Kurt. Milliput is very sticky generally although sometimes it is stickier than others. I usually mix the white first, so it probably does sit for 5-10 minutes. A lot of it depends on temperature and how long you mix it. I mix the white for longer than the other colours to make sure it is thoroughly mixed. I always fold the edges and ends in with each fold as these are the bits most likely to be poorly mixed. I have started dampening my fingers slightly when packing. The more you use Milliput, the better you get at mixing and handling it. All the best Jim
@Freefallpilot658 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. Going to put it on the lathe this evening for the reveal. I glued in slices of polymer clay canes. Lemons, Limes and just for fun, one kiwi. lol. Hopefully the milliput will hold it firm enough for the lathe chisel to cut it cleanly as the polymer clay is slightly soft. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108508148/764d578dde9d07f813a8c8f9b81fdf67.jpg

Now, go to a craft store and pick up some of the embossing powder folks use for doing their gift cards. I picked up a bottle of turquoise. Next, crab some oyster shells (haven't tried clams yet, but suspect they'd work as well) and crush them down so you have pieces ranging in size from 1/8" to 1/4". Mix all this in a two part epoxy (I use some requiring a two to one mix, but suspect any would do), then press it into an inlay. When I did this, I could only do about 1/5 the turning at a time, because it would droop, but you can buy thickeners that solve that problem. Once done, back to the lathe, like you did and watch the results. You'll end up with genuine fake turquoise inlay. You can get an idea of the effect of using this at the Router Forums site: www.routerforums.com/finishing-touch/92522-genuine-fake-turquoise-inlay-material.html#post1170890 . If that doesn't work, try Lumberjocks: lumberjocks.com/projects/242834 P.S. Thanks for sharing a good tip. Kelly
