Woodturning - Spalted Beech Bowl using Milliput as a crack filler. Part 1

Great job Mike and many thanks for the shoutout. When filling cracks with Milliput I have found that it is best to paint a bit of slow set epoxy resin into the crack first and immediately pack the Milliput in on top of the wet resin. The Milliput then fills the bulk of the void and pushes the resin deep into the crack ensuring a good bond to full depth. Cheers Jim

That was a big chunk of spalted beech but a testament to how effective the glue block is! I too have had issues with some cracking into the project when moisture readings have shown below 10%. The use of Milliput is a good idea, I've had some very results with it. I just wish they made it in more colours! Looking forward to Part 2!

Great video. It was just what I was looking for, have just turned an oak bowl and wire brushed the outside then scorched it but have now got a crack, I’ve got some black Milliput so am going to try and fill it while keeping the texture I’ve created.

I have experimented with colouring Milliput using acrylic paint. It needs a lot of working in but it works well to change the standard green/yellow to whatever you want.

Tony Campbell - the standard seems to be white, black or grey. I see Mike using terra cotta. Ive also seen turquoise as an optional color, but not from the UK vendor.

ARC Wood Craft - I just wish Milliput was cheaper, available in more colors & sold at HomeDepot or Lowes. Our Hobby Lobby has the same old tube of white on it’s shelf. It does turn nicely & finishes well.

Great video Mike. Curious why you chose not to seal the blank with Anchor seal or PVA glue on the end grain. How do you expect the Milliput to work with high moisture content, if you are concerned?

Fantastic job mike as usual does a hot melt glue gun really hold that well I have one but have never used it any tips greatly appreciated cheers buddy 👍

Thanks Clive, I have 100% faith in the integrity of a hot glue joint providing both surfaces are dry and the glue is properly hot, with a good quality gun and glue sticks. I have had wood fail due to a catch but the glue joint remained intact. Hope this helps. Cheers Mike

Hi Mike, I often use Milliput as a filler, as it's much cheaper and useable than resin. What was the starting moisture content? Did you take a measurement from inside the bowl as well? Although it depends on the wood, Ive had a lot of seepage of the CA glue into the adjacent wood that will not go away, just with sanding. Now I've started to apply sanding sealer locally to prevent the seepage and it seems to work. The only downside to Milliput is the limited colour range, you can add colouring to it but it takes quite a bit of dye to get strong colours .BTW that is a lovely piece of wood and will make a wonderful present...looking forward to Part 2
