Nice to see some one else who drills a recess for mounting. Much more efficient. I turn exclusively green wood and use it for bowls up to about 16 inch diameter, though most are 14 inch and less. Most of the time, 1/4 inch deep is plenty for a good secure hold. On some of the more uneven blanks, I will drill down far enough so that the face of the chuck sits on the face of the bowl blank. I haven't had one come off in ages. They never go back on exactly true when turning the outside of the bowl. I do use scrapers for all of my roughing cuts because the tool never comes out of the wood till shape is done. Then one or two passes with a gouge is usually good enough.

Nice to hear from someone else who does it! I've been sharing this method for over a decade and almost every turner I speak to sees it as some kind of revelation. Do you have some fairly long jaws for this to work on green wood? I'm using the standard jaws (about 20mm long I think) and have found that the grip is occasionally not sufficient when I'm turning green timber. Any time there is a knot, the blank can easily shift, so I've decided not to recommend the technique for green timber. Although to be fair I've not used green wood for such a long time I may be misremembering. Can you tell me if your blanks are straight from the tree, or are they 12-18 months old and a bit drier? I have some log of that age in my to-do pile but was expecting to start them off with my screw drive insert. I'd be interested to find out more about your setup.

@@woodworkscoracles6540 I have a bunch of mostly bowl turning videos up. One is Mounting things on the lathe, which shows how I mount my bowls. I use a Vicmark 120 chuck for most of my bowl turning.. I think I got the tip about drilling a recess from a Richard Raffen video, but can't remember it was so long ago. I prefer to get spring harvested logs, and turn once to final thickness and let them dry and warp. Favorite wood to turn is Pacific Madrone, which has a texture like pear, a reddish color, and warps in unpredictable directions. Water spraying everywhere.... We have very dry summers here in Western Oregon, and even under tarps in the shade, logs dry out too fast and crack. 12 to 18 months after harvest, they would be mostly useless. The only problem with mounting a green blanks with a drilled recess, minimum 1/4 inch deep, is if you try to leave a blank on the lathe over night. They don't like that, and may crack even inside a plastic bag. Bowls are dry in about a week, and I use a power drill and an articulated arm rest, another video. so I can actually spin the bowl by hand for sanding. Check out my Scary Scrapers video on how I use scrapers for all of my roughing.
@woodworkscoracles65402 жыл бұрын
@@robohippy thanks. I had a look at some of your videos and I can see that your scrapers are very effective on the green wood you turn. I work the majority of the time with kiln dried timber, although here in the UK nothing dries out that quickly regardless of the time of year. I confess I'm rather attached to my gouges for roughing out and shaping quickly although I do sometimes employ a scraper for help with the finishing touches, but you hardly see them being used in my videos. I discovered the recess drilling method by myself about 15 years ago when I first got into turning, but I'm glad that it's more widely acknowledged than I had realised. I'm just surprised not to have ever seen it mentioned in a woodturning book or anything, although to be fair I don't have a very large library of literature.
@robohippy2 жыл бұрын
I like the scrapers even in dry wood. I do use a smaller one for dry wood though, 3/4 inch wide, compared to 1 inch wide for green wood. Preference for turning dry wood is air dried. Vacuum kiln or solar kiln dried is almost identical. With standard kiln dried woods, if you rip it or cross cut it on a table say, you get dust. With the others, you get shavings. Huge difference in how it cuts. I love teaching as much as I do turning....

Had to stop the video at 3:44 to write this. That first cut with the gouge and I was saying, wow, this guy knows his stuff. Then you freehand with a skew(?). Really good, thank you.
@woodworkscoracles65406 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dennis Hughes. It was a technique I discovered by accident one day and used for some time. The tool is a skew, but cutting like a negative rake scraper which eliminates the risk of a catch. Since I shot this footage I've changed my lathe and the grind on my gouge, which have speeded up my process and largely removed the need for this technique. Here's a more recent video of a similar sized bowl kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmSwqp-wnJWEnJY yet taking almost 30% less time to produce.

I have watched a few of your videos and they are amazing. On mounting the blank, it looks as though you have used a drill so that you can hold it on the lathe. I am a novice so please can you describe how you have done this. Thanks Nikkos
@woodworkscoracles65403 жыл бұрын
Hi Nikkos, thank you for your feedback. I do indeed use a drill to prepare the blank for turning, actually it is a Forstner bit (or sawtooth cutter) which has a size the same as the fully closed diameter of the chuck jaws. So the hole it makes is a bit like having a faceplate ring, except it is not dovetailed. You can see some more detail of the mounting method if you have a look at this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/lai7mKtsebiFhK8 Not being a dovetailed recess means that the blank will probably come loose - or even fall off - if you are prone to getting catches, therefore it is a mounting method that rewards good technique and will help you learn to avoid making the kind of mistakes that cause the chisel to dig in. I use this method rather than a conventional faceplate ring, or screw chuck, since it is a very fast and effective technique to prep multiple blanks for production turning. However this method is not suitable for use when turning green (not yet seasoned) timber and I would not recommend you try it without tailstock support on very large or heavy pieces. Safe turning :)

Great work!!! Does anybody know would the wood crack (even after you have dried it) with time with this types of projects as the wood is very thin and with the change of temperatures/ moisture it might change shape or crack, would this be a possibility and how could you prevent it?
@woodworkscoracles6540 Жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, sorry I missed this comment! As someone who eats exclusively off of woodware I can tell you that it is very unusual to experience much movement of the pieces over time, when you have started with properly seasoned air dried or kiln dried timber. Of course if you are working with green wood then you can expect to have loads of movement as it seasons after turning, which is why a lot of greenwood turners employ a two stage turning and drying process. Again though, once it has become seasoned, then it should remain fairly stable. However these statements do assume that you aren't abusing the bowl, and also there can be a lot of variability between timber species, so it is worth getting to know the properties of your local trees. From my limited experience with the UK palate I've found ash, oak, sweet chestnut and sycamore/maple to be very stable. Cherry is a bit of a wild card and I have some lovely bowls which have lasted decades, whilst other bowls have cracked within a few years. Beech was historically used extensively for tableware but is also renowned for movement in service. I haven't used it enough to form an opinion. Hornbeam famously takes a long time to dry, but once it has finished I think it is pretty stable. Elm is another with good historical precedent, but not one I've had much opportunity to try out. As already mentioned though, it is important to use them sensitively, for example narrow/deep bowls are not great with hot liquids, and if you carelessly soak anything in water for hours during cleaning, or put in a dishwasher, then you will be creating the optimum conditions to achieve maximum distortion/cracking. Conversely with broader, shallow bowls I regularly reheat stews and the like in the microwave without mishap. In summary I would say it can crack, but it doesn't have to. If you are mindful of species selection, moisture content, cut of the plank/grain orientation, avoiding the pith, wall thickness, using shapes appropriate to the food type and cleaning and storing sensibly, then you'll be able to have long lifetimes for your wares. But if you ignore the fundamental basics of how wood functions in the environment, and treat it as an inert substance that will behave how you tell it to, then you will likely have a lot of frustrations, split/cracking bowls and disappointment.

You will need a woodturning lathe with a capacity large enough for that diameter you wish to turn. The heavier the machine the better to absorb vibration, or have it on a leg stabd that is bolted to the floor. With thousands of brands in the world I can't recommend a particular machine, but the more you spend the better it will be. I prefer having variable speed and a rotating headstock, although this machine (which I had about 8 years ago) did the job perfectly well.

nice vid - The blank you used looked dry - turning wet is very rewarding because of the cost of the material - but it also is far easier to turn. Drying oak is a killer so if it is turned thin and allowed to warp naturally the final product can be far more interesting. If you watch your technique it can be remounted for sanding when dry. Again, nice.
@woodworkscoracles65406 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments :) It is dry wood that I'm using here. I prefer air dried but mostly use kiln dried blanks these days as the wood is so much cheaper. Whilst on paper green wood is theoretically less of a cost since it is often free, there is a lot more work converting it into blanks which then need to be sealed and carefully stored, and as you have already mentioned there is a high tendency for the wood to warp after turning. If you are planning to make unusable art works this might be an agreeable feature but it is not really desirable from a practical perspective - after all how often do you see pringle shaped plates for sale in department stores or when you go out for a meal? I don't consider £2-£3 for a blank this size an onerous expense when I can fit it straight onto the lathe and have a saleable item less than 10mins later. Your method sounds a lot more unpredictable to my ears, and when I have an order for 60 bowls I want to be confident that they are all going to stay flat when they are finished! As for the ease of turning, well again I'm perfectly happy having a finished bowl in 9-10 minutes kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmSwqp-wnJWEnJY. Agreed I'd sharpen less often if I was turning green but the waste shavings and offcuts would be less usable, I'd still have to dry the pieces before I could sell them, and if they didn't stay flat they might not sell at all.
