Absolutely beautiful! So much details. I've wanted to do this with PCBs too... but now I realise I just don't have the wood skills but maybe I can do something simpler!

After the planning the tough part is 'actually starting' and then once you've started forcing yourself to stop. There is no such thing as a 'final finish.' Like you I really wanted to start building my own furniture. In my case I wanted to showcase the grain on the local hardwoods available to me here in Singapore i.e. rainwood, angsana, mango etc. However, there was a massive snag. I'd never done any woodworking before AND I live in a small apartment. Also, I don't have a shed/garage/workshop and no one would rent me space. However, it didn't stop me I found a lumber yard that would cut my project boards to the correct approximate size and with battery powered tools I could carefully work them into the required shapes then put them together with woodglue and clamps to create the carcasses. I've built most of my stuff with a jigsaw, a power drill, a dowling jig, a router and a random orbital sander. I'd never done anything like this before but I worked at it and got some great results. I wish I had started doing this years ago. If you want to get started pick something simple for your first project that you will use in your home and take your time. You will be glad you did.

great video. I love that kind of diy stories, there's always a lot to learn. Besides, i wouln't go myself for such an table for two reasons: first, i'm not a friend of epoxy at all, second i am convinced that a plain, homogeneous table surface on a workstation is very advantageous for quickly discovering small objects.

One thing I wouldn'd do is embedding LEDs. When they fail and they will, you will have them directly in front of you bothering all day long. But other than that, desk looks amazing.

Very cool. But how easyli it's makes you scratches during regular work and how it's looks after year or two?
@buildxyz
@buildxyz Жыл бұрын
Time will tell, if feels hard like glass. It’s easy to apply a quick polish. A river table with dishes and pots on it would get a lot more scratches and folks make those all the time :)

Looks great! The only gripe I have, if the led strip or the magsafe charger breaks, if you switch to an android phone or Apple decides to introduce a different wireless charger that's not backwards compatible, you would need to throw away a huge resin brick...
@buildxyz
@buildxyz Жыл бұрын
%100 and why I went with the best wireless charger that works with Android devices too. But yes it could break which is reason I didn’t bury more active electronic components. It’s not a resin brick though imo. It’s all really just cosmetics and the charger will look cool forever.
@Blizzard4242
@Blizzard4242 Жыл бұрын
@@buildxyz ah I didn't catch that, good foresight! Definitely, although you won't be able to use the wireless charger if it breaks, would've been cool if you came up with a design that would allow to exchange it. The only thing that would be unfortunate is when the led strip breaks or simply wears out (led's don't last forever, especially if they are not heatsinked as in your case), where it would be quite difficult to impossible to replace.
@buildxyz

When I see projects like this, I always wonder if people take epoxy seriously enough, and when I saw that right, you were not wearing a respirator while pouring the epoxy. Especially when you pour significant amounts of epoxy, this stuff is toxic. During sanding, I saw one, but not during pouring. But enough complaints. The project itself is fantastic. It looks really cool.
