Part two of the casting repair for Leo at Sampson Boat Company. In this video, I will show how I turn bronze bushings on an expandable mandrel on the metal lathe and then press them in place on my arbor press.

21:40 Hopefully you swapped the direction the rods were originally installed so you will have less slop. That's until you wear out that section of the rods in the next 50 years.

Hi Keith, You do really nice work. As a 76 year old Tool & Die Maker, let me assure you I never was very good at Brazing Cast Iron. Pain in the butt to keep it from exploding. I'm very impressed with not only your work, but your extremely first class workmanship. Kudos to you for helping out the kid. I'd make him give you a ride when Tally Ho slides into the water! Once the die engages the stock, he should be alright. The slop will be divided up.

@@dennisdownes9319 Yes, on this type of machine, the die stock floats so that the machine isn't dependent on perfect mother stock.

This fix is gonna be good for at least another hundred years. It was so satisfying watching Leo's team thread those critical bronze fasteners (there are hundreds) so effortlessly with the newly fixed machine. A lot more wooden ships will be built over the years using this machine, I bet!

Thank you for helping Leo !!! I have watched YOU for years, but THIS is the First time I have seen your working for another UTuber that I also Follow!!! I have done Both WOOD (including a Kayak, why I am watching Leo: Water & Wood) as well as some commercial metal work. I had the honor of brazing Trombone Valves for the man who invented the First Brass Music Valve (Patented) since the late 1800’s. Mr. Ora Ed Thayer. His Trombone Valve is used Internationally, and by the FOREMOST BANDS of the World, including the Presidential Marine Corps Band! I also machined certain Brass & Bronze parts used on the valve, One weighing only 4 Grams was turned on his only lathe, a Seven Foot bed with a 12” swing: I drilled for a 4 40 brass screw! The lathe was powered by a Three Phase Converter, as his area did not have 3 phase commercially available power. I felt it such an honor that he accepted my machinists skills, I had mostly done only jewelry casting, smithing as well as hobby working on a TAIG Micro Lathe & TAIG Micro Mill.

I've been following Leo for while now. Great stuff. Had to see how the machine shop rebuilt the threader. You do have some fancy tools. Especially that double tapered mandrel and that adjustable reamer. I really enjoyed watching your video. Thanks. Press fitting .001" Wow. There is just something mesmerizing about watching a metal lathe take off shavings. Glad that are still people around who can do this.

Kieth, turn your tool upside down and run the lathe in reverse when cutting brass or bronze.This will keep the chips from spraying all over you and the shop.

Like you, I also follow the Sampson Boat company project, but I wanted to let you know of my appreciation of the work and projects you perform at your workshop and demonstrate in your KZbin channel. I grew up in my Dad's welding and repair shop where he undertook farm machinery repairs, often making similar repairs as you, although never making castings like you. But he did employ his blacksmithing , turning, welding, forging, and other creative skills almost daily. Keeping aging machinery and tools alive and operating was critical to his farming and rural clients in the 1950s,, so I saw and later learned, when I got to be teenage, to braze castings repairs as you completed. He forged, turned, and welded many diverse projects for himself, and his patrons. It is nostalgic to watch your show and kudos to you for keeping your well-demonstrated skills in front of a camera and your viewing audience. I also enjoy your verbal and visual skills employed while crafting your video. It's a relief in this no-repair era, sometimes due to the product design of the manufactures' designers, whereas old machinery is most usually repairable by existing and learned skills such as yours, along with the use of the equipment you've assembled in your workshop. Thank you for your work and skill.

Comments was very funny. I have had the motorcycle in the living room, bushings in the freezer, heated ABS for forming and metal for normalizing in the oven. Useualy with my wifes foreknoweledge and reluctant approval. She is a good sport.

Nice job Kieth. One thing, pick one...either heat or cold for inserting bushings. If you have access to dry ice or liquid nitrogen that’s the way to go, but most people don’t have that option, so heat is most commonly used. Putting those bushings in the freezer didn’t make much difference at all because as soon as they touched the hot material they warmed up so quickly any dimensional change was lost. The heat you applied done the job, not the cooling of the bushings. Keep the videos coming.

I have seen Leo's video. The repair seen here works perfectly. Leo had to sharpen the dies so that they would cut. But the rails work fine, there is no meaningful lash, and Leo has threaded a lot of bronze bolts on his repaired machine.

Greeting from “down under” OZ, what a way to watch this video. Started off watching “Bus Grease Monkey”. SO, A guy from Australia contacted Scott, because he is refurbishing a Steel Trawler in Sydney, with a Detroit diesel in it, same as the greyhound busses Scott repairs in the USA. Followed the guy’s u tube channel “ Danker Marine” back in OZ, to see how he got on, and then relayed on somehow to Wooden boat building restorations with “Samson Boat Co” and because of a Brocken Threading Machine, “Vintage Machinery” and Keith Rucker. And I’m a retired Electrical Mechanic, Go Figure?
