Are you a teen feeling overwhelmed by school pressures, social media, or the next big test? Or a parent worried about your child’s anxiety in a world of school shootings and nonstop digital input? Join Dr. Marc Brackett on Dealing with Feelings as he welcomes Dr. Lisa Damour-New York Times bestselling author of The Emotional Lives of Teenagers-for a deeply honest conversation about what today’s kids (and their families) are really facing.
Topics we cover include:
-Realities of Teen Anxiety: How constant school shooting headlines amplify fear
-Healthy Coping: Simple self-talk, savoring positive emotions, and strategies for guilt-free rest
-Parenting Pitfalls: Balancing empathy with high expectations-without shutting down kids’ feelings
-Shifting Perspective: Why “uncomfortable” isn’t always “unmanageable”
-Looking Ahead: Creating a more compassionate society through better emotional education
Dr. Damour also shares her personal journey-studying under Anna Freud’s legacy, working on Disney Pixar’s Inside Out 2, being the co-host of Ask Lisa podcast and offering clinical insights on how to manage fear in an uncertain world. Whether you’re a teen, a parent, or an educator, this conversation is packed with actionable steps to handle the highs and lows of everyday life.

Thank you Dr. Marc and Dr. Lisa Really enjoyed this one, quite cheerful and calming to listen to :) My top 3 take-aways: 1. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory is underrated, i only learnt about this in postgrad studies. I think it would have helped in developing a healthy sense of self earlier - had i learnt it in high school 2. The framing of the 'input/output' problems teenagers face, was fascinating terminology for this. 3. I am going to be more mindful regarding who i surround myself with - healthy co-regulators or activators of heightened reaction... Thank you so much for another wonderful, informative episode!

13:12 Discussing emotion regulation... Music and other strategies in Dr. Lisa's words... there are some "highly adaptable ways kids are coping .... they might not get celebrated" as healthy coping because they don't look recognizable- this is an eye opening revelation for many that might sometimes believe music is used as an escape from emotion regulation... Another awesome session Marc TY and Lisa! IMO...we need to keep music more top of mind in the school curriculum with the essential recognition that it is valuable for helping with emotional regulation.
