No hate, but don’t ever waste money on mint. It will grow like crazy in pots, the mulch bed outside your apartment, or some random part of a park that no one uses. Like one seedling and you’re good for life.

It’s handling this crazy hot summer so it’s probably fine. The mint here has survived years without taking care of it. It’s gone through over 100 degree weather and close to -20 degrees. The weather in this part of the us is all over the place and mint handles it all just fine.

Started trying this method for a few different things yesterday! Chamomile, Rose Petals, and loads of spearmint. The rose cheong is already more liquid than anything else and it’s absolutely beautiful. Smells divine and tastes even better. I’m convinced it’s magic. The chamomile hasn’t done much yet. I pressed it down a bit more today just to see and it is starting to dissolve the sugar just very slowly of course. Smells bitter than the normal sweet apple smell which is interesting. The spearmint has lots of syrup already as well. Smells even stronger than it does if you massage a leaf between your fingers and also tastes near overwhelmingly minty. Very very concentrated flavor which will certainly make it last longer. I do want to try the pine needle one too but I’m not sure what’s edible here yet. I want to try to make a pineapple pork and pine dish with that. Not sure quite what yet but it sounds tasty 😋
@katefernoliver
@katefernoliver 2 жыл бұрын
Next time I make mint syrup I’ll massage the leaves down a bit more to bruise it. Can fit wayyyyy more in the jar that way and jump starts the sugar dissolving. I started with 1 large jar and 2 little ones with the mint syrup and was able to fit them all into the one large jar with plenty more room after they’d softened up naturally.

Mint is essentially an aggressive weed. We planted it one time in our garden and over one season we had it take over the 4x4 plot and spill into the grass. Put it in a 3 gallon pot and keep it watered and you will have all the mint you need or could ever use.

In Korean Natural Farming, this method is called fpj. The plant hormones are drawn out of the leaves and then they syrup is used as a foliar spray to encourage more vigorous plant growth. Of course that's a super generalized description but it's very interesting. All of the knf inputs are edible (tho some are nasty) and it's super interesting to see this process being used for consumption

Grow mint in a container, it’s super easy! Buy a small plant at a local nursery and put it in a larger pot immediately and it will fill the pot over time. You can cut it back over and over and it will keep growing back

Put a few of those stems in some water ..in a few days you should get roots along the stem...Plant it in a pot with some good potting soil,plant outside when it stays warmish at nights in a semi shaded protected spot that gets filtered sun or morning sun.Cover your bed with some finely shredded mulch (About 2-3 inches,and don't allow the bed to dry out) it will spread by "runners" underneath the mulch and you'll have your own mint growing in no time.It may die back in the cold,but it will come back if you add extra mulch after the dieback or cover on sever cold times with an old quilt.

I live in an apartment with a balcony and I've grown Spearmint, Chocolate Mint, Orange Mint and Peppermint consistently for 6 years. You can grow it super easily and if it seems to not be growing, give it full/partial sun, water weekly sometimes more(the leaves will curl when they're dehydrated), and prune the shit out of it. My mint produces so much when I pinch off all the bigger leaves leaving the baby sprouts under them growing on the vine.✨

Best thing is to grow herbs yourself. Coriander, mints, garlic, curry leaves all are very convenient and less area consuming plants(at least in my local climate) . Just have to water them that's all and can be grown even near a window with natural sunlight. It has more fresh and strong flavour than store-bought

My family is using older and traditional ways of both storing and preserving stuff again. Because you know... _inflation_ and the recession that's about to get *much worse* . You can make flavourful oil with garlic or heirloom onions (the tiny ones) in olive oil just becareful as the oil soaks into the meat of the vegetables it tends to release what I can only describe as "carbonization" so having a tight latch jar or "burping" the jar for about one or two days after jaring/caning. You can also do it with eggs for almost an entire year if you use about a table spoon (about a gram and a half or so) of lye in a stonebound/ ceramic jar. It's so crazy the many things that families and relatives used to use to make food stretch even just 50 or so years ago.

I'm amazed by the price you consider cheap for mint! In my country this amount would cost no more than 2.5$ But, pineapple will cost around 10$ so I guess every place has its own benefits :)

Do you guys have farmers markets in Australia? Produce is quite a bit cheaper when you buy straight from the farmer or gardener... Or grow it yourself.
