Hi, don't mind me, just recycling some milk cartons!
In this video I am finding out whether or not you can recycle your old milk cartons into (usable) paper at home!
This video is in no way affiliated with Oatly. (Even though I love them)

the plastics from the paperplastic looks like a cold laminating that usually used for making the printing last longer. that is a very thin plastic and you can write on that. maybe that's the reason the paperplastic worked well... also the paperplastic looks pretty good for a wrapping paper :D

Hi! Loved the video, here in Brazil we also get milk boxes/cartons to build dog/cat houses!!! We just use the box as a brick, and it works pretty well with rain, since its coveres in a thin layer of plastic

@@katesutherland6088look up eco bricks!! You can reduce waste by putting your trash that won’t decompose and other plastics inside until it’s all filled up. It makes the box sturdy like a brick and it’s helping less stuff go into landfills! Good luck with whatever project you’re doing❤

I wonder if you could cut the carton into larger pieces before separating them. Might cut down on work. Also those plastic pieces would make a really cool paper lamp shade! Loved the video and impressed with all the hard work you put into it!

I would try to soak the plastic and aluminum layers more time until the cardboard is soft enough to come of by just rub it with your fingers.

Ok, the foil can be grated with the back of a knife or spoon the plastic paper i got It by finger! If You keep 2 big Pieces of tetrapak you have a nice big shape of alu remaining that can be used for food covering

Lisa, thanks for doing the experimenting for us. I liked both the first and second sheets of paper. The ones with plastic looked very artistic, like you planned them that way. They would look good as a background in a frame or maybe the background of handmade cards. Also, I would cut the carton open and leave it intact before you pour boiling water on it. Then you can peel off large pieces of foil or plastic. Beautiful video!

the stickyness is likely the glue and it probably working as a kind of sizing in the finished paper. you might be able to get the plastic layers to peel in whole sheets if you cut the edges and soak it for a day, letting the cut edges wick the water in to break the layers apart. I used to do something similar with pringles tubes. you could also use a stiff bristled brush to scrub the printed side and the aluminized liner to remove nearly all the pulp from them.

I love this video... the color of the paper made from the cardboard parts is just beautiful and the one with plastic looks surprisingly artsy, it would be nice as a cover of a notebook or a box or something. Your determination of trying even feeling "unsafe" feels very inspiring to me! I've watched a few videos about making paper and this one really made me want to try it out, since I'm a big recycling enthusiast. p.s.: the sponge was doing it's job so it's more than okay haha Cheers from Brazil💖

Lol, next time you know to soak the boxes before you cut them! I would also suggest taking some steel wool to the plastic and foil layers to separate the pulp after soaking. The stickiness is probably and adhesive or binder.

You could glue 2 of the caps together by the insides so the caps open on the end, maybe put a divider of some kind in between. Then you have a little 2 sided container and you could even modle clay to all the parts so they still separate and make anything.

Hey you could have tried letting the diluted plastic mixture sit. Plastic coating would have floated but pulp would have settled down. Removing plastic from top and then agitate the mixture again and let it sit. Repeating this process would remove most of the plastic from pulp.

Thank you for sharing this! I’ve been really into watching paper making videos and would love to try paper making. You gave me an idea what to do with my milk cartons next time. By the way, do you think it would be easier to soften and peel the milk cartons and separate the layers if they were not cut into small pieces? Since u struggled in 3:27 of ur video I just want to confirm if it would be easier if they’re not pieces by piece 😅 Lastly, I’m so thankful for this vid! ❤️

This is great. Very informative. Thank you! I appreciate that you show the failures as well as the successes of doing this. After watching your experience I’d probably try cutting the carton into four large pieces to soak them, then try to preserve the foil for another project. FYI for people who don’t have a blender: I’ve made some decent paper using an immersion blender. I put the soaked paper pieces into the bin, with plenty of water, and blend it in there. Worked fine.
