They both look excellent, well done. Glad I am not the only one who has sewing fails. My biggest fail was my own engagement party dress, got so frustrated with it I drop kicked it across the floor. Thankfully my lovely mum picked it up and finished it beautifully for me, that was 38 years ago! Good on ya mum!!

I’ve been sewing for many many years and I learnt that if you’re not quite happy with a garment you’ve made you need to alter it straight away as you end up never wearing it, so full marks Janelle for redoing yours after all this time 👏🏻👏🏻🧵✂️🪡

I have only just watched this video Janelle and I love how the dresses turned out especially the 2nd dress after altering. The fit is absolutely beautiful. I have been sewing for so so many years and I think it's great idea to redo any sewing fails to enable us finishing and wearing the pattern that we wanted in the first place. It's definitely an extra effort. So well done. Great job!!!

Great idea to fix up these dresses. I have sewn for years & learnt a lot. Main comment is i would line up any checks or stripes. Fussy cutting uses a bit more fabric but much more satisfying finish. I sewed a frozen dress recently it had to be lined up as the princess Elsa was in rows! Also did my granddtr a gingham dress for xmas. Always a learning experience. Happy sewing!

I love the alterations you made! For sewing buttons by machine, all you need is a zig-zag stitch, lenght 0, disable/lower the feed dogs, attach a button foot and choose the right stitch width for your button. There are loads of tutorials on it, and it made my sewing so much enjoyable, because I really like those button-up dresses like your first alteration.

Great job on both! My high school sewing teacher, back in the 1970's, required us to always match up plaids and stripes at all seams, so that all the lines and squares were continuous with no mismatches. It was a painstaking experience laying the pattern pieces out, cutting, and sewing. We had to use lots of pins so that there was no slippage. Otherwise, we would not get an A, lol. Needless to say, we avoided choosing stripes or plaids for our projects.

Vast improvement on that second dress! Looks great! I'm in the process of fixing a knitting fail. I really hated a choice I made by adding an odd purl row near the bottom of my cardigan. I had basically finished the whole thing. I ended up weaving some yarn through on each side of the "mistake" to hold the stitches and then I just cut the sweater pieces in half. Then I took out the offending row and actually added some length while I was at it. Then I joined the two halves back together using the kitchener stitch. Thankfully there are some great tutorials on youtube. I just finished reknitting the back piece and getting my knitting needles lined up. Now I have to weave it back together. Then block everything. Then seam it. Then learn how to knit the front band with buttonholes. I've actually never gotten this far before with a cardigan! LOL

I like the remodel of the brown check dress. The maxi length is perfect but I feel it lacks some detailing. The addition of a couple of long, 4-5cm wide ties to the back of the dress (tied loosely in a single knot) could really amp up the vintage vibe and finish it off.

These transformations worked out so well. I know you are glad you took the time to remake the dresses into something you will definitely wear. In looking at the first one, although I do like the new skirt style, I think it needs something to break up the overall fabric design. Maybe a sash of sorts sewn into the side seams that ties in the back. Although it would still be made from the same fabric, the sash and bow would help to break up the almost monotone look. Or maybe several small buttons sewn from the neckline down the center front. Just a thought.

I would love to make my own clothes as I can't find much now in my style ( the style you create) or it is so expensive you can't afford it. Maybe soon I'll just go for it and give it a try. Hope I don't waste good fabric? How would you go about selecting a starter/ easy skirt pattern? Right now it seems intimidating to me. Oh how I would love to do this. Thanks for sharing your talent with all of us. You are genuine and kind.

Aw thanks so much lovely! I recommend getting your hands on some second-hand/thrifted fabric if you can (bedsheets especially!) as it’s an affordable way to start and won’t seem as daunting to cut into. As for a good beginners skirt pattern, you could try my gathered skirt tutorial. A lot of beginners have made it with success, and it is just made up of rectangles of fabric 😊 kzbin.info/www/bejne/gae3oWyGrceMfaM
