If you want "free" metal filings for filling in gaps, just use your catcher bucket at the bottom of the grinder. Get a very fine sieve of even a cloth filter (tshirt or something), and filter the water out from the filings. You can use that to fill in gaps when trying to amalgamate nails or other pieces during forging. I've done it a couple times, and it's a decent alternative to steel powder.

Making steel powder involved specialized equipment, it's much much finer than you're imagining. He can make forgescale and metal shavings, but he cannot make powder
@twilightsparkle752 жыл бұрын
@@GiraffeFlavored idk i think the grinder that turns metal into dust requiring you to wear a respirator would do pretty good at making metal into a powder. dust is pretty close to powder.
@GiraffeFlavored2 жыл бұрын
@@twilightsparkle75 Like I said, it's finer than you imagine. The finer the better for steel powder, the grinder makes something more like sand while steel powder is like flour. It doesn't seem like a huge difference but the amount of air that gets trapped in an irregular shape like grinder scale is massive. Plus, it's all going to be oxidized and basically useless for anything quality. Steel powder needs to fill in the gaps in a billet and add strength, random rusty scrap dust is going to make a poor quality rusty piece of junk

I expect there would likely have been a sort of woodgrain looking pattern to it, as the surfaces of the nails welding together would have caused a slight differentiation in grain structure
@VTRAddict3 жыл бұрын
There would have been a pattern, but it would've been very faint. Similar to cable Damascus. Not the distinct black and silver you'd get with 1084 and 15N20.
@Novur3 жыл бұрын
@@VTRAddict the black and silver is down to how you finish it; 15n20 still blackens in etchant, it just doesn't corrode away as fast as 1084, so after an acid bath the 15n20 sections are sticking out of the surface, meaning they're touching whatever you're polishing it with before the 1084 sections. Both materials come out black. That said, when you weld metal together it affects the properties of the joining surfaces. It's subtle, but you can still get the welds to show up on the surface etching in the same way you can with dissimilar alloys. Alternatively, if you take it to a high enough polish, the light will catch the different grain structures, in much the same way that japanese smiths finish their swords

Alec Steele - You needed steel dust but you have a plethora of it, take a magnet into the grinding room and just get a bunch from where you grind, including the water bucket.. that would give you grand dust to work with (it might require some time to dry since you have it in water, I suggest rinsing it with acetone and then drying) get yourself lots of dust for the next box weld item you try! (I think this would be a cool re-use of the grinding dust and small fragments you have .. bits from the mill, the grinding wheel, the drill press etc)
