How do we decide the turn is offside or nearside ?
@mareksicinski37262 жыл бұрын
They give examoles, but the proper way to do it is turn offside to offside unless there is a sign saying otherwise
@hjx015 жыл бұрын
Saw you mentioning nearside and offside turning in one of your other videos. This is something I wasn't taught on my test, and although I passed first time with no faults the idea of having two ways to turn with no "right" way confused me. I guess offside to offside is more natural on larger junctions.
@OH-pc5jx4 жыл бұрын
My suspicion - although this isn’t the sort of thing I’d say in a driving theory test - is that nearside is a more efficient position if nobody on the other side turns right, so people tend to assume it when they think the other side is clear and assume offside when they know someone opposite is turning right. Not entirely sure though, still getting used to this concept myswf

I always try to teach nearside and offside, whether pupils will come across it on their tests or not, but we don't always get the time (for example if someone gets a short notice test). Annoyingly, the vast majority of crossroads I come across are nearside to nearside, and, also annoyingly, the vast majority of these junctions either don't have arrows/guidelines, or they're too faded for people to see properly. Once I was waiting with a pupil, and the arrows used to say nearside to nearside, but all that was left were a couple of tiny "V"s, one either side of the junction. A van came up and forced us to go offside to offside with him, but with another junction in a neighbouring town, so many people just cut across when they're supposed to be turning offside to offside, and I've even had a police car cock us up there. If one is coming off the main road there and turning right, it is nearside to nearside, just to confuse people even more, but at least there are lane markings. Just after this junction there's a 7 foot width restriction, and 10 times in the last few years I've come across cars smashed up there, as it's got high kerbs and bollards. Twice they were instructors' cars.

Had the same situation as in the video with the red car, everyone just stopped not knowing what to do, I was doing nearside and she decided to do offside. when do you know when to do nearside and offside and who’s at fault ? As some crossings have road marking to take the turn but most still don’t.
@OH-pc5jx4 жыл бұрын
I think one thing the driver in the red car could have done in the scenario shown in the video is look at the positioning of the opposing car, and vice-versa. Not always easy to do, but that would be my first guess at ways to avoid this kind of situation

Junctions that have painted road markings are near side to near side and the most common is offside to offside

Thank u so much for this video. Today one car turning right crashed into a car going straight whilst I was on the junction then the lights went green on the other side but I was in shock and didn't move off straight away and it could have been a lot worse thankfully one car let me pass. Now I will make sure to always stay behind the line if I'm not certain I can make it regardless of the t*ats beeping!

2:06 if you have a green filter arrow you won’t get any oncoming traffic but be careful because you might still get oncoming traffic coming towards you who are also turning right.

Hi. I live in London but I see from your video it's little be difficult Junction in your video than road in London although I can do deal with it. But still difficult and danger special in night time can not see road markets on road.

It doesn't surprise me that most of the drivers flouting the rules or being aggressive/ignorant are "Private Hire". The acceptance rules are so lax that these days anyone can become a "Private Hire" driver serious criminal convictions included.

Better than the other videos on this subject, i hate this aspect of driving the most (Oh and roundabouts), why there isnt just 1 way of doing it i dont know? And making eye contact with the other driver in this situation does not help me... What am i looking for exactly? A squint? A blink? A raise of the eyebrows? Facial expressions weren't covered in my highway code. I've actually already passed my practical test 3 days ago but i still am unsure of certain things.

1:21 obviously, with a lane of traffic next to you on your left there’s no way that you can turn offside to offside in that situation.

Hi this is really helpful! Just a quick question. If the car in front of you is also turning right do you always stay behind the white line if it’s taking too long for them to turn right. Because if you follow the car behind you and it takes a while for them to turn right then that results into the other lanes lights turning green and you being stuck in the middle and therefore causing a hazard. So is it always best to stay behind the white line if you are unsure? But if that is the case then are you allowed to do that if the lights are green? Wouldn’t the car behind be frustrated? I’m so confused! Please help!
@ashley_neal7 жыл бұрын
+Sana123x Thanks for the great question. I would never enter the junction unless I was 100% sure I would be able to clear if the lights changed. If I wasn’t sure I would wait behind the white line. For me, 2 cars in the middle is enough on most junctions; I wouldn’t generally be the third car. If the first one hadn’t moved up far enough I would wait behind the line, as I would also if a large vehicle was in the junction in front of me. Also never let anyone behind pressure you into doing anything you’re not comfortable with. Thanks for watching my video and taking time to ask a question. I hope I’ve stopped a bit of your confusion. Ashley
@Sana123x7 жыл бұрын
Ashley Neal thank you so much, honestly, the video in itself is really helpful! If the road is smaller and narrower would it just be better to wait behind the stop line and let the first car in front turn right? But if I am waiting behind the stop line would I not be holding up traffic if the lights are green? That’s what worries me! Because if I’m right behind the first car turning right, waiting to turn right too then the other lanes lights change to green and then I’m stuck and they start beeping!

If there is not enough room to turn together just hold back and work out who's going to go first. Don't be put off by anyone behind. See whether this helps any? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXa8eoWGr7-gg9k Ashley
