Turning Pallet Scraps in Beautiful Piece

I make this pencil holder with scraps of pallet and a piece of Jatoba.

With that grain orientation is much better to try to scrap in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation as possible, doing it in the way is shown in the video is to fight against the grain all the time, to cut is better, but deciding to scrape that is the way to go, while the technique used would have been correct with wood grain oriented parallel to the axis. I disagree with you my friend, not a good way to use the scraps given that grain orientation, and the tear out demonstrates it.

I've been wanting to try some hollow turning and was thinking I'd need to find a way to fit a drill bit to my shifty lathe to hollow out the forms. Never thought of just locking the spindle and using a power drill.

It is dangerous to not cut off the corners to take the sharp edges sticking out there. It increases the chances of it flying apart. It is also dangerous to do what you did without a tail stock to put pressure on the right side. This increases stability. Given the size of the piece, even if it flew apart it may not cause much damage. I'm talking from experience. I had a piece fly apart and I totally did not expect it. It hit me in the face. What saved me? I had a dust mask that was heavy material and a face shield. It hurt a bit but there was no blood. The piece you made did turn out great. It is very beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I have had this happen but the piece flew into my chest. No blood and I was wearing a thick apron, however it left a good bruise. I guess I usually have to learn the hard way!
