It would be a faux pas for the industry follow suit as it would only invite unfavorable comparison. I can almost understand GTA6 being $100 given long development time and smaller current gen install base; however, yearly releases don't even make sense at the current price. There's too much non-creative financial overhead in this business. This is an industry where the parasites are bigger than the host organism.

If they deliver a GTA as dense and detailed (or more) as RDR2, it will absolutely be worth $100. I prefer not to pay that, but I can't be more critical when yearly releases cost the going rate. I hope consumers look at GTA and realise "if that's a $100 game then these other AAA games aren't worth the $70 I payed for them."

I could justify paying $100 for a game as exceptional as RDR2, but I probably won’t, simply because I don’t feel Rockstar deserves it. Their mishandling of RDO was a major misstep, and it’s hard for me not to hold a grudge against them. That said, I still plan to get GTA VI, though I won’t be the first in line on release day, and probably not for a hundred bucks.

@@MattSimmons-ys3mv What are you on? RDR2 was one of the last AAA games that had an amazing story line, probably one of the best storylines in gaming. Granted, online was definitely lacking and should’ve had more time for development. They definitely could’ve added a lot more features to RDO. I’m not sure if it would be worth any AAA game at this point, since they’ve gone downhill in quality over the last half decade now. I’m worried about how GTA6 will be especially since R* has been getting rather lazy with GTAO for the last year or two with updates, and RDO has been left to drown for a few years now. I’m not convinced that GTA6 will be worth buying unless they put it on sale for a decent amount after a while, especially if you’re on PC since they’ll probably keep it from those of us that are on there, again. Given how GTA Definitive Edition was an abject failure, especially when it released, that it got so bad that R* disabled refunds for it, if I remember correctly. That is definitely a scummy thing to see them doing that. Just going off of how the old guard AAA studios have been performing and how unoriginal they’ve been, it wouldn’t be surprised if GTA6 is half baked, over priced, or a broken mess at this point. Hoping for the best, expect the worst with modern games. Hell, look at how many indie/small time game studios have came out of nowhere with games that became popular for a while, but fell off because people have the attention spans of fruit flies at this point thanks to social media.

I don't believe in actual reasons for inflation. To me that's just an excuse for "we've decided that we haven't been taking enough money from you lately and so we're inventing problems to just do exactly that." I heard people talking about its being slow and tiring to go A to B cause fast travel or other mechanics were not being told well. But I disagree RDR2 was both gameplay and storywise even online while it was still being maintained was absolute gems and they were great. Saying Rockstar's games are not great saying like Valve didn't shape the gaming industry or Steam is a terrible game platform. Great watch and discussion as always Cat! For me I think they will charge regular pricing. Even tho GTA 6 is anticipated as all hell I think the same way they did for GTA V and for RDR 2 the standard version will be regular pricing then where they will make their extra money is via deluxe editions and ultimate editions AND then micro transactions. Because they already tested the battle system using RDR2 Online Outlaw Passes so what they will do is just battle pass some online content in order to make people who don't wanna grind be able to access the content faster so shark cards will become even more valuable this time round so an extra monetary system that doesn't just give you direct cash as we saw them implement in Red Dead Online but this time with the content levels that they gave to GTA V. So if you combine those two aspects then their micro transactions will print money for them. Same way that EA still leaves FIFA at regular pricing but then makes billions from Ultimate Team with people buying packs.

"Swelling video game costs" is literally due to tossing around buzzwords and pointless decisions that the end user doesn't care about. They are only for investors and ensuring they get more money. I honestly don't know a single person who wants to play 8k games. Literally 1080p is fine in most cases. 4k I understand if you have a humongous screen. And they are focusing on niche politics to pay consultants insane amounts of money. These games can barely hold 1080p60fps on semi modern iron so why the fuck are they stuffing features like 8k and ray tracing everywhere, trusting DLLS and other stuff to compensate for the incompetent optimizing. Nobody cares about your game having 15 top Hollywood actors as voices and faces either. Diversity hires in pretty much all industries raise costs too. Unskilled employees make product take longer to produce which in turn raises the cost of production. I have a hard time justifying a 70€ purchase especially these days because games are incomplete messes with forced unnecessary fluff anyways. As a low-income housing we don't have much money to go around already and the big shots want me to gamble a few week's food on a product that might be plagued with infectious cancer that they paid influencers to ignore. No thank you. It doesn't matter that the prices have not been adjusted to inflation - neither has the income of the average end user. 70€/$ was a lot 15 years ago and it's a lot now. Extra stupid thing is the developers get paid duck all while the investors and CEO's get bigger and bigger slices of the pie. I'm not gonna even touch in-game micro(actually macro)-transaction purchases in this rant holy buck. In the end I'll likely wait for a hefty sale before buying the game because I just don't trust R* to deliver a game worth 70€/$, let alone more... Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

If you look at the hours of entertainment provided per dollar, video games have been cheap for a long time. A 2 hour movie ticket near me is $12, that'd put a 12 hour game at $72. Most all of the games I pay $70 for give me way more enjoyment than 12 hours. I would happily pay $100 for GTA for that reason, but it's an aberration in the industry because other games do not provide hundreds of hours of entertainment.

Just today on Monday morning, more articles started coming out with this rumor. Honestly, I can see this happening. Take-Two Interactive were the first ones to raise the price from $60 to $70 so for their next gen games so I wouldn’t be surprised. Let’s not forgot that this game is reportedly costing Rockstar over $2 billion dollars (don’t know if it’s actually true) but let’s just wait and see. At this point, I'm not even interested in it. GTA has only gotten worse since San Andreas, and 5 was the worst of all in addition to what they added online to ruin their universe, they also think graphics are a substitute for substance. I hope it's good and y'all enjoy it, I'd love to be wrong because they used to be a great studio.

I'm an indie game developer and people have no idea how much more expensive it is to make games today compared to 10 years ago. The equipment and software I need to create my games cost a lot more today. Hiring artists etc... costs a lot more. Cost of living has increased for me and my family, my kids need food on the table. I need to raise the prices of my games so that I can afford making games, otherwise I will have to quit and find another job.
