Warning Spoilers. So I, a 28 year old guy, really resonated with Turning Red. Like, so much that I've been having to work through a lot of messy emotions it brought to the surface. I had a protective mother, maybe more so than Ming. I was a "gifted" kid that could never really live up to the expectations. Especially once my ADHD got worse in my preteen years, which the panda reminded me of a lot. In fact the scene where she's beating herself up and begging it to just go away hit me really hard because it was almost exactly the same as my reaction to my ADHD getting worse. "Why am I like this? I wish this would just go away!" I also realized that the "cure" has parallels to ADHD medications. "You can cut out this problematic part of yourself to better conform!" (Note that back when I was diagnosed the medications available had some nasty side effects, so I never used them. They've come a long way since then.) So the ritual scene, with her struggling over the choice and the visualization of ripping yourself apart to fit other people's idea of what you should be, hit me pretty hard too. Top all that off with the "I'm not going to regret this... Am I?" Since I chose not to use the meds I've had a lot of struggles. I wonder sometimes if it was the right choice. So just... Yeah. A movie hasn't caused me to reflect this much in a long time. Basically I found it super relatable and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites.
@chatnoir60609
@chatnoir60609 2 жыл бұрын
Ohhh wow, the parallels between both are so many. I'm sorry you had to go through that. Now that you mention it, I loved the movie because it can work as a metaphor for so many growing pains situations. It's brilliant.

@@chatnoir60609 Thanks for the sympathy. It's part of life though, we all have struggles growing up. Like you said, it's great that the movie can feel relatable to so many people with so many different growing pains. It's important to realize we aren't alone in it.

the scene where Mei's mom finds her drawings was excruciating to sit through because it partially happened to me. well not the embarrassing af confrontation part but just the discovery and asking "WHAT IS THIS" part 🤣 she once came across my deviantart page and forced me to close my account because she thought it was full of shady people solely based on the website name. also occasionally she'll find my sketchbook while looking for something to take notes on (BUT WHY MY OWN NOTEBOOKS? I think a lot of us had that 'helicopter parent' point in this time period where they were snooping in every damned thing you did, and there was also the risk of something embarrassing being found. I'd like to think that, for those of us expecting to be parents of teens someday, we'd treat any accidental discoveries of 'those drawings' as "Oh, they are starting to feel stuff! I guess it's time for The Talk."

My stepmom ripped up my drawing and said it's my fault for not doing my schoolwork. It hurt more that she threw it in the kitchen garbage where it cannot even be salvaged. I don't know if that hurt more or getting a manga I got from a friend as a gift being ripped in half in front of me.

Btw, yes it actually is in part about getting her period. The jokes weren't coincidental.. Gross red monster. The way she's walking stiffly when she's in her bedroom? I can confirm that's how we walk when we're trying not to move too much to prevent...an "accident". "Prevent any accidents." Curling up in the fetal position because it hurts. You can even make a case for the extreme emotions thing, cause a lot of us can attest that extreme emotions tend to make it...worse, let's say. And the friends neutralizing the panda? A way to show that having friends around to help you through it when you have an "accident" can make it less embarrassing.

Even though some dumb reviewer thinks the movie isn't relatable for those who aren't from that culture, that the movie is just for a certain niche, I personally found myself a lot in Mei-Mei. I was not a little girl in the year 2002 (even though I was 15), it was only recently that I finally understood my trans identity and accepted my femininity, even if I did not leave the closet to my family or my friends for the moment. So the part of Mei-Mei that hides who she is or searches for herself, 100% relatable to me. The part of her that draws sexy things too, at the same age as her. And even though I wasn't a fan of boy bands, I was all for Spice Girl at the time. So there you are, I'm not a 13yo little Canadian girl of Chinese origin going through puberty, but the 34yo French trans woman that I am can only recognize herself in her.

Where did they find a box of baby kittens? They showed stray cats hanging around the temple. Yes, Priya is an icon. Few people notice she has already started her period. Dad always had a gentle word for her, and he was the only one who noted she was unhappy about giving up the panda. I think Jin was actually kind of into panda: "She was...incredible." I'm a 70-year-old black man, and adore this movie. My daughter was a young teen in the early 2000s, so I related to this much more than I did with Encanto.

Honestly, I would freak out if I saw Jordan Fisher in concert, as Mei Mei and her friends are when they see Robaire in 4Town. I honestly didn't think I would like this movie, because it seemed like a silly plot and thought "Over the Moon" was better. But I actually liked it better than I thought I would. They're just different. I loved Mei's friends and her dad is probably my most favorite character in this movie. And it was funny when my brother and I watched this because during the scene where Ming shows the box of pads to the whole class, it was awkward for both me and my brother. Being a 59 year old Caucasian dude, didn’t really connect with the characters. I did however live in Toronto in 2002, so I connected with and greatly appreciated that aspect of the movie. You’re right, it’s not often you see a Canadian perspective in a high profile American made film. And they got most of the details right. So nice to see the Skydome demolished, as opposed to the Golden Gate Bridge or Madison Square Gardens. And it’s rare to see the fundraising and repair efforts afterwards. That’s so very Canadian…

I'll be honest. The first act bored me, but by the end, it got so adorable!

Is this what the world has come to? Kids relying entirely on social media to rule their lives? How about you watch it and make up your own mind??

i think you should give it a chance. most people that i've heard saying they don't like it usually point to the cringe and secondhand embarrassment as the reason why, but story wise i think it's pretty solid. if anything, it will let you see into a culture that's not often portrayed in media.
