Seeing the money making potential of turning "junk" wood and scrap parts into something everyone wants.
In this video, I'll be showing you how a little creativity and an artist's inspiration transformed a slab of wood that was set aside to be burnt, into something useful. You may ask why someone would burn this In the lumber industry, when sawing boards from slabs, you can only get a board as wide as the narrowest point of the board in between the bark. This slabs crazy odd shape made it "worthless"... that's why I chose it.

UPDATE: Ready to get deep? After reading so many awesome suggestions for names I kind of put several ideas together and came up with “A Minute Past Midnight”. So like most artistic projects, everyone sees something different (proven by the hundreds of great ideas and reasonings). Some focused on the hourglass shape or the fact that it was a “cull”... others the pinched corners, the look as if it had been pulled and slim in the middle. The Cinderella theme was on my mind from taking something seen as “ugly” and “useless” and turning it into something useful or beautiful… But after thinking about it… I loved the slab just as it was before I touched it… it caught my eye as unique and I could see the beauty it held. No, it didn't meet “standards”... yes, it was misshapen, different, and twisted… but it was… perfectly imperfect. So the name… Society pulls us in so many different directions wanting us to be and look like it wants us to… It pressures us to race against time… be more productive… squeezing us for just a bit more…. It points out our flaws instead of focusing on the positive… and before you know it, a distorted version of yourself appears… the version you think they want to see… and only after the day is done (the midnight hour)... you allow yourself to be the TRUE you… the perfectly imperfect version of yourself… the version that if given a chance its real beauty would shine. So the message here is, live your life in your “minute past midnight”… allow the “Spell” to be broken and be your perfectly imperfect self ALL OF THE TIME… and the ones that deserve you will notice and love midnights version of you… the real you… and if people don’t like you without the distorted show… then they don’t deserve to have you in their life… so, your midnight hour may seem dark at first… but only in the darkness can people see your stars…

"I wanted to take something considered worthless and turn it into something useful" This is my approach to most things in life, especially people. So much waste and disregard in this world.

I kind of liked what you said in the second paragraph, referring to the “midnight hour”. You could etch a clock in the center, striking midnight. Maybe the hands on the clock could be a glass slipper. Some may never get it but those who read this, here, will completely get it. Thanks for the kind words and direction. I’m 63 and still forget this at times. ✌🏻🤍

What a great project, I love how it turned out! If I was naming the bench I'd call it "pressed for time" the hourglass, the pressure marks on the corners and the Cinderella story all fit. You are such an inspiration! Although I haven't really done any real woodworking projects, yet, I hope to be able to one day just have to find the space. Meanwhile I will watch your videos to keep me motivated.

I stumbled upon your post. I have a wonderful workshop with all the machines and tools that anyone could wish for. I have made things that are awesome and perfect for everyone else. From toys to bee hives, couches to bedroom suite, benches to jewellery boxes, always for family and friends and a few commissions. This is my hobby and not my vocation. I am retired and spend my time in my workshop. I have recently been depleted of ideas and inspiration and lack motivation. Seeing this post has spurred me on to make something for me. Thank you for the spark!

Your comment about taking the time to look into a person , instead of at them , was an example of quiet wisdom . It transcends the ordinary evaluation ! You took the time to see potential in a piece of wood that others would have burned ! Your finished piece is innovative and beautiful ! Thank you so much for sharing !

Years ago, I read that two of the definitions of redemption are "to liberate or fulfill". When I was a kid when you were having a confrontation, someone might ask "You wanna make something out of it?" Later, I learned that by transforming found objects into art, the answer is YES. Yes, I do.

Cinderella turned out beautiful! The "legs" were the "glass slipper" to this project. Your inspiration continues to amaze my hubby and myself. We will be in the shop tomorrow morning as my son in law brought us a bunch of barn wood. Our kids are amazed that we have found a passion in wood working. We are living our second childhood after all these years. 😉 Big thank you Matthew!

As a new woodworker with very limited money to buy materials (in Denmark wood is very expensive, and hardwood 8-10 or more times more expensive than in the USA) I find this channel is THE best to find inspiration for my tiny workshop There are many "how to use basic tools" channels, and to build jigs, furniture, etc. but I've not seen anyone so creative and with so many opportunities to build things to sell or for myself, with tons of possibilities to change these to what style I prefer. Thank you SO much, Matt

Really cool piece! As for the name, what popped in my mind right away, "Father Time" because of the hourglass shape. Also, the clamps applying that pressure look to the wood makes me think of how a diamond is created... pressure & time. Thank you for sharing this amazing build with us!

“ Pinched For Time “ outstanding job and for the mind as you are right. We must follow what intrigues us and step out of the day to day. My wife and I rescued an antique make up table adored with carved mirror keepers and drawer faces. It was a wreck. Swollen from moister top missing chunks of veneer and separated. She loved it and I love her so there ya go lol. It was missing one carved piece so I made something I never would have tempted to before. Again you hit it on the head. Copying the shape was easy but carving the design with highs and lows with pitches and dips was challenging. Had every Drimmel bit in shop out including my pocket knife lol. Turned out great and was a real sense of accomplishment. Now she’s found an old bar stool and I’ve converted it to match complete with all carved adornments plus 2 small draws with same faces. What a trip. She’s worth it. Great video man.

If you remember, in the original film, Cinderella first met Jaq and Gus Gus because they were caught in a trap.
