I have always thought the Sierra was a much better minimum choice. The slimline is.... to slim. When I am making a pen I want a turned section big enough to show off the beauty of the wood, acrylic, laser cur or segmented blank. The slimline is only about 65% of the Sierra's diameter. Your pen was gorgeous!

Hi Bob, That pen turned out really lovely. If I get a fingernail after applying a CA finish I use a sharp scalpel to carefully remove it. I also use the lint free cloth cut into small pieces to apply the CA to avoid any possible issues with using paper towels. Cheers, Huw

you can reduce the chances of tearout during drilling by adding a scrap to the bottom of the blank before drilling using thin ca. also if the bottom piece(walnut in this case) is glued on with the grain going the length of the pen, that helps too

Hi Bob, Happy Easter weekend! Can you post some links to some of the new tools, etc...you use in this video? Also, do you ever use a reamer to square the ends of the blank? That is how I was taught but I like your sanding wheel technique. Where did you get that jig?

Beautiful pen Bob. You mentioned that padauk bleeds into the other woods. Did that happen with this blank? I noticed the center of the chevrons appear to have a red line.
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
There were some gaps I believe due to not enough clamping pressure during the glue up. Any divot on the wood can collect sanding dust so it is entirely possible. Regards, Bob

Hi Bob, Great video. You do a great job of explaining your process. How long did you wait between coats of medium CA glue? After applying the CA glue, how long did you wait before sanding? Thanks, Peter
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
The medium took about 10 to 15 minutes to dry. It depends on how thick you put it on. I just leave the blank spinning and only touch the bushings to test if it’s still tacky, never touch the blank. Even if it’s a bit tacky you Can apply a fresh coat over it. The critical coat is the final one. Sometimes that one can take a long time to fully dry depending on time of year and weather conditions. If it’s taking a really long time, still tacky after 25 minutes or more, I will use activator on the final coat only, never any of the other coats. Regards, Bob

Bob, that is, indeed a beautiful pen! I have gotten to where I really like the Sierra kit as well. May I ask an opinion? I am trying to design a special pen from 4 wood types. I love the Gisi pattern but instead of the chevrons, have you seen anyone do a cross? I'm trying to find an example as the 4 woods are from 4 different churches and I'm wanting to out them together in a real classy way. Thanks!

Wow. I think this is the most beautiful pen that you’ve made to date. You’ve inspired me to try and make this pen 😃 I have a few questions before I start. What speed do you run the lathe when you apply the CA glue? Do you use accelerator for the thin CA? If no, how long do you wait until you apply the next coat. I created the no stick bushings and I noticed that my blank isn’t centred. So it wobbles a little. Do you have the same problem? We’re do you buy the lint free paper towels? Thanks Peter
@RJBWoodTurner5 жыл бұрын
I run the lathe at the lowest speed it will go, otherwise it will throw the C/A everywhere. I avoid accelerator at all cost and never use it on thin C/A. It usually takes about 30 to 60 seconds to fully dry. I do have the wobble if turning between centers but it really doesn’t hurt anything. Regards, Bob
@petrusscott30385 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I put 5 coats of thin CA and I noticed that the finish isn’t perfectly smooth. So I was thinking of doing a light sanding. Did you ever experience this issue? If yes, what grit of sandpaper did you use. Thanks, Peter
