Nicely done! That spoon chuck holder is awesome! Great idea!

creative idea and well executed. This is why I spend a few minutes on KZbin everyday. Not sure that I'll ever make kitchen spoons, but I learned some good techniques, read some helpful comments and will be a better turner as a consequence. Many thanks, for sharing. Cheers, Gord

As a new wood turner, I absolutely laughed out loud at your "at least they didn't end up in the fire pit" comment. Man, I can relate. Nice video; nice project. I think if you were to upsize these spoons, they'd make really beautiful self supporting soup bowls!

Grady, A well done video on a well done project. I just discovered your videos and am enjoying them. Your craftsman chisels led me to comment. Those are the chisels I learned on and I think they have a valuable learning curve. They are unlike other spindle gouges in their shallow profile. I think of the chisel I see you using as a hybrid skew/spindle gouge/roughing gouge and by mastering roughing and finishing cuts with it you gain valuable insight into skew, roughing, and spindle gouge concepts that others may miss. Keep up the good work. Good wood selection, project planning, and design sense

They turned out beautiful. You could make salad utensils like this by cutting one scoop into a fork too.
@BobBlarneystone3 жыл бұрын
For the first operation (to avoid bandsawing), instead of gluing the wood pieces directly together, place a piece of kraft paper (a brown paper bag) between the pieces. Then turn the piece, and when it's done place a sharp chisel at the paper layer and strike it with a mallet. The turning will split perfectly in two.

You can get a better idea of a more graceful spoon by taping two pleasing shapes together at the point where bowl meets handle. Arrange them to be symmetrical when viewed from the side, trace that onto a template. Turn your blanks to that profile and saw them apart as you did here, but add cuts in the bowl area to remove wedge shaped bits like what came from your handle. This will make for a more swoopy shape. Augmenting them with some hand carving will make a huge difference. I second the comment about off axis turning, though I think you will still end up finishing with knives and chisels to get what you want. Inspiring video. Thanks!

I'm not much of a woodworker, but I think the problem with your band saw, is too much pressure being applied when you're cutting a piece. Our shop Teacher taught us that an easy way to tell if you're pushing too hard is if the blade twists or warps while cutting. the smoke can also be caused by pushing too hard, because the more pressure you apply the more friction you create. I think if you just go slower and let the saw do the work, things should work much better for you. Great video and nice spoons, I especially like the color contrasts.

I think that your spoons are awesome. I have been watching a lot of turned bowls and such. I notice none are coated beyond oil of some type. I would think an epoxy seal or something to seal the project would be nice. Any insight as to why I don't see that done?
@PracticalEngineeringChannel8 жыл бұрын
+walter mccue I just don't think epoxy looks that nice. There is a small concern about food safety. Generally if you buy a wooden utensil from the store, it will only have an oil finish, if any finish at all.

Hi. From what I can see, you have the same (or very similar) bandsaw that I have. Taiwanese, branded 'elephant' here in South Africa. Mine cuts very well (after some tweaking.) Perhaps I can help you with some of its idiosyncrasies.

This may be a bit of a profane question, but have you and the other KZbin woodworkers thought of creating a marketplace for selling items like those showcased in videos? I always end up thinking "I want one, but I don't have money or space for a woodworking workshop". Obviously the pieces would be expensive, especially in cases where people only make one of a kind. But maybe some KZbinrs would be interested in making several with the intent to sell them. And yeah, I guess you can use eBay, but I've never seen a woodworker on KZbin plug his eBay page ;)
@PracticalEngineeringChannel7 жыл бұрын
Good question. Most of my projects are gifts for others, but I do know a few youtubers who also have Etsy pages where they sell their projects.

You had some good ideas in this video. Any lady "should" be proud to show them off. A side note. Wander if a piece of flagging ribbon would show up being tied to the handle? That would be a legitimate reason to get a roll of (Police Investigation Do Not Cross) ribbon. Always wanted a roll.
