I bet the transmission fluid change made the biggest difference in performance today. I know from experience that a transmission service should be a priority when you get a used vehicle that you want to keep. It's almost a phobia for me to drive one without doing it within a day or two, but I've had a couple of 300,000 - 400,000 mile GM 90 degree V6 with automatics last longer than I owned them after getting both of them around 200,000 miles. I believe it was religious fluid changes, temperature vigilance, and those near perfect drivetrains. One was a 3.3 liter with a 3 speed, 91 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra and my favorite of all time, 4.3 liter 4 speed 2 door 2WD 90 JMC Jimmy. I used to pretend it was a race car that could pull a trailer and drive off road too. The only thing that I would want more is the "Typhoon" version. Tyler Hoover's old one is still the driving device I dream about owning, if I could own just one vehicle in the world for the rest of my life.
@Canthus133 жыл бұрын
Really? I'm terrified that a fluid change will kill it by removing the grit that's keeping the clutches from slipping too much. I'm pretty much resigned to replacing the trans on my old Dodge B20 in the next year because it already slips when you first start it.

Old comments but.. yeah, since my Park Ave has been having a few probs, I've been looking at them on YT. By "some probs", I just mean I had to replace the alternator (and battery) a couple or three weeks ago and then I had to get a MAF sensor yesterday. I remember reading in the manual 20 years ago that the Park Avenue (non-Ultra) called for transmission fluid changes every 50,000 miles OR every 25,000 miles if primarily driven on "windy and hilly roads". I have always remembered that because I read "windy" (as in wind up toy) like "windy" (it's a windy day with that wind blowing so hard). And for about 20 seconds, I stared at that word thinking "how are roads 'wendy'?" So, yeah, that memory must have its own wrinkle in my brain :-P I'm at 120k miles on this 2000 Park Ave and I've changed the fluid and filter at least 3 times, maybe 4 times, I can't remember. It was my grandma's car and she was all about keeping her stuff in good working order and I was all about doing free labor for her. Remember being in your early 20's and having that kind of energy? That thought hit me a little while back lol... I was talking with someone about how we always used to wax our vehicles and then wax our family's vehicles just for fun. Now I barely wash my car 😞 Anyways, I do believe in servicing the transmission sooner rather than later. That's because "later" is usually because something is already slipping or acting up. Once something is acting up, a fluid change doesn't fix anything. It may help it out for a little bit, but the damage is already done. There's some rare cases like in the Ford 4R70W transmissions with torque converter shudder that a fluid change to Mercon V actually was the permanent fix, but yeah, I want to say OVERALL, waiting until you have an issue to change the fluid only masks the problem for a short while whereas vigilant fluid changes prevents those issues altogether.

Just took my Buick Ultra on its first road trip from UT to AZ. Best recorded mileage 33 mpg going 80. For the first time I used pure gas (no ethanol) which is supposed to burn hotter and increase mileage. All I know is for a large vehicle, that mileage is amazing. Great highway car. Honestly, it was easy to creep up close to 90 and not be aware of it. I had to catch myself multiple times easing back. The car accelerates like a bat out of hell, smooth, quiet ride and when my back got a bit tired just turned on the heated seat which also cover my lower back and it was great. throw. However, I may it up for s put it up for sale because I just don't get the use out it deserves. It needs the love of someone who appreciates what it has to offer.

Did the accumulator spring kit on my 98 Grand Prix GT back in the early 2000s. Don’t remember what company it was from but they gave you three different options. Mild, medium, and bang-screech. I opted for the medium setting. Cold shifts were a bit harder, but once warm if driving normally it wasn’t very noticeable. Get in the throttle and wow what a difference. We watched shift timing on the tech-2 and it was shifting at around .9 seconds. Very nice!

Great job. The very next job on that car is to add the heaviest duty auxiliary transmission cooler B&N makes. It is rated for 21,000 pounds. That fluid is a disgrace. Back flush the transmission, then install a new filter, and get the cooler in. Then you will have a transmission that will work. My 89 Grand Marquis with the 5.8 litre had one from the factory as part of the towing package. It also had a factory shift kit in the heavy duty AOD. Ford never advertised the upgrade to the transmission, but having had 3 Trailer Tow III cars and 3 regular Panthers, believe me, the difference is very noticeable. After all, the power of the engine is useless if you can't get the torque to the ground

So you went from a 3.4 to what? I had a SSEi Bonneville with intake, exhaust and a 3.4 modular pulley on a stock tune. I had a 4T60E-HD due to being a 96. So the vacuum reference on the side of the trans had a small Philips screw I could tighten and increase fluid pressure and thereby firm up shifts.

Jeepers it looks like there was a murder in your garage with all that ATF on the floor. I don't have any automatic Saturns left, but I did my share of changes of fluid and filter, as well as some magic tricks to try to fix an endemic sticking reverse. But those had something called a "valve body". Never opened a transmission for anything larger than a miniature riding mower.
@marknelson87243 жыл бұрын
The valve bodies will stick if you never change the fluid. If you wait until the transmission starts to shift a bit "strange" and then change the fluid, filter and all the valve bodies, it is like a new unit. But don't wait that long. And don't waste time checking which valve body is bad, just change all of them while you are in there.
@rpavlik13 жыл бұрын
@@marknelson8724 that makes sense. I did change the fluid and filter before the strange shifting, but a "reverse slam" is a well known problem with that Saturn automatic transmission. (It's always and only reverse, used relatively infrequently but requires much higher pressure to actuate I guess) Now my only Saturn left is manual, and the other car is a Subaru with CVT that's programmed to pretend it has shift points which drives me slightly crazy. 😁
