My first listen through of this album was like the first time I met my best friend. As a 44 year old dude, this brings back so many good vibes from coop and basement shows in the 90s. Every song feels like I've been listening to it for 30 years, yet they're so fresh, and so wonderfully resonant in their message. To anyone reading this: I love you.

@austinpetersdrums2 жыл бұрын
I feel weird replying to a comment but I get a rather different read. I don’t know how much these songs are about romance or relationships. I feel like No Surprise is definitely about broadening your horizons for sure, but more so as like a letter the listener. They dropped this record around the time that they were also hopping on huge tours and festivals, playing in front of a lot of faces that, outside of punk and hardcore/some metal and pop punk, had never seen the dynamics of a hardcore/metal/extreme music show. I think the live aspect of turnstile, and really all hardcore bands, is the main attraction. They just so happened to also make a record that has a ton of really ear-worm choruses and beautiful production and dropping at a time where the cultural conversation around rock music is general becoming more positive. “Under ground, swinging and we’re missing with the lights off“ is a local hardcore show mosh pit wrapped in cute little lyrical bow. As someone who plays in bands, and thinking about the grind that this band has been on, TLC feels like a thank you to the audience. The thrill of seeing people jump off stages and knock each other out to your bands and sing every word you wrote back at you with more intensity than you is a feeling that fills you with more gratitude than you can imagine. Really makes you remember being the one in the crowd. Those last lines of TLC are a rip on a old sly & family stone track but to me really feel like they see themselves in us. They see the hardcore kid at the local show they were when they were a kid and it’s what allows them to be Turnstile. Idk maybe I got a completely wrong reading on it but that’s my take

I can imagine that it is not easy to put out something like this. Especially after some of the mixed reviews on the last album, it would have been understandable for them to go back to something more "traditionally hardcore". I respect the hell out of their decision to move forward to something even more "untraditional", not only sound-wise but also in the visuals here. I'm super excited about this and whatever comes next.
@BigWorldx3 жыл бұрын
@@wyattgillis7708 i just checked again to make sure i'm not talking nonsense, but pitchfork gave it a 5.4 out of 10, the guardian gave it a mixed review as well and fantano also gave it a 5 lol. i also remember a bunch of people complaining under their yt videos. honestly who tf cares about reviews anyway, good for them for doing whatever they want, that's how it should be.

tfw when you rely on reviews to enjoy art. reviews matter if a project/art/output is made for commerciality. as far as i am concerned, turnstile did it for the love of the music and the community, not to please some outsider ears aka the guardian and pitchfork or whatever.
@BigWorldx3 жыл бұрын
@@moveforwardsidebyside did I say I rely on reviews to enjoy art? No, I said the exact opposite. I just wanted to express that it would be understandable for a band to go back to a more traditional approach to hardcore after receiving some backlash (from critics but also fans) and I commend them for not doing that, because music isn't about catering to expectations, be it from critics or fans, it's about doing whatever tf you want.

Some of the freshest hardcore I’ve heard in years. And the perfect antidote to the past year. First song - the band is separated and each performing alone. Found out about these guys while working as a vendor for Adjacent Fest, this band was my favorite, with Blink/Paramore…and they’re MAJOR headliners. Everyone was going BATSHIT nuts when these guys played. Don’t think I sold a single food item when they were live 😆 Was dope that I found a new band I like in rock cuz it’s been a while which sucks. Hope to run into these guys again, they killed it LIVE. They got the stuff, fo sho.

@@kidinPJs exactly what you’re hoping for. It was a fucking blast. Chetta is a great stage performer for how small his popularity is, Shakewell gets the crowd moving and bumping. Germ? Well Germ is Germ that’s all I need to say lol. Ramirez is a classic I’ve seen 2 times this year never disappoints. Night Lovell was awesome too his energy is unbelievable. Lemme tell you I’ve been listening to $B since early 2016 and I never saw them in concert till last week and it was amazing. They put on such a great atmosphere and energy for both hype and chilled songs, and always try to leave the crowd on a better note with the world which is great.

It's definitely can fun but it can also be so light that it gets pretty forgettable. Nothing they did here was truly amazing and honestly alot of it was just filler lo-fi beats or interludes. Entertaining to watch, sure but to say it's groundbreaking is a tough sell. Watch it, enjoy it a bit and move on. It didn't really provide anything outside of that for me.
@ourielzeboulon3 жыл бұрын
In a scene where most bands have become blend and generic, TS manages to refresh their sound at every release. Their music is very contemporary in the sense that they don’t treat their music as being hardcore music,, they treat their music simply as music, without limitations or barriers. On another note, they know how to bring positivity back into their sound, something that disappeared off the radar since the 90’s in hardcore music. It feels good and refreshing. Sorry if you didn’t fully appreciate what they’re doing here.
@RockyPondProductions3 жыл бұрын
@@ourielzeboulon If you truly analyze and critique it outside of being a fan it just does not hold up to the standards that this comment section is giving it. The fact that they are exploring things past hardcore and probably don't want to be labeled as hardcore anymore is fine. There are many sounds out there that are fantastic that are not hardcore. It's not an issue of "oh they are not hardcore enough anymore" it's just that the whole idea of them doing something super innovative and unique is totally off base. They are not the first band to come from a small core scene and groom their sound into something more palatable and different, they are not even more fun sounding than a lot of other bands. Nothing here is jumping off the page as something totally unique and for some reason people forget the countless times bands have gone in this direction (not 100% sonically but definitely in spirit & ideology). Honestly, there is probably 5 to 6 min max of music in an 11 minute ep. It's nearly impossible to say something is so pivotal at this length, there just is not much here. Like I said, it's fun, entertaining and worth giving a listen but it falls short on aspirations of being some sort of pivotal piece of music like this admittedly biased comment section believes.

Such good vibes from an amazing hardcore band.
