Seeing the DOS version here, the gfx is indeed nice, but: Our hero looks different than the original (and his helmet is flat!), the scroll is buggy, the audio is is a bit distorted. Having come to the platform rather late in life after being an Atari boy (and passing through Sega consoles and PC along the way), I've found it rather disappointing that, for all the crowing about the superiority of the Amiga sound system, the majority of its soundtracks are complete arse and mostly consist of talentless hack composers throwing a load of samples at the player and going Look How Clever We Are (whereas the ST - and C64 - gave you some very basic waveforms and left you to live or die on your own talents). Which kinda would have worked in the 80s and early 90s, but falls pretty flat now. Turrican, however, is a clear exception to that general rule. There have been at least a few titles I've run across inamongst the mire which actually do sound better, and this definitely counts, much as I already rated the Yamaha reinterpretation. Maybe something to do with how they employed a composer who had already more than proven himself on the 64...

Not gonna lie, when I only had my Spectrum +2A, I had a lot of fun with the Spectrum version and the rendition of the Level 1 theme which serves as that version's title tune was top notch. Obviously it's pointless when you have an Amiga, ST or C64, but run-and-gun games that were actually halfway playable were a rarity on the Speccy in those days so it was a welcome sight.
@danmcdaid4 жыл бұрын
I loved the Speccy version - though it handled poorly and the scrolling was slow, it had a lovely mystique about it. You really didn't know what was coming next. And those colours! How did they get all those hues out of the humble Spectrum? To my mind, a handsome and atmospheric experience. Do Navy Seals!

TBF, it is a bloody good game when stacked up against other ST platformers, even if it doesn't quite reach the Amiga's dizzy heights. I can just about make out the reduced colour depth, for example (on the sprites and scenery - the sky is a bit too obvious, seems no attempt was made to even raster-dither it like on the Amiga, and AFAIK no STe version - which would have fixed that - was ever made), but they hid the lack of registers and their lower resolution extremely well. And of course we were always hurting for sprite-wrangling and smooth scrolling ability (again, if only there'd been an STe version...), the fact that almost the entire screen (albeit 320x200 not 320x256) is in motion at somewhere around 17~20fps with so many simultaneous sprites is pretty miraculous. Shame that, like the sky fade, no attempt was made at producing sampled speech effects, but on the standard machine that probably would have eaten up just a few too many CPU cycles (...ditto). As I recall, the controls and timing were pretty damn tight, too, very responsive, which made it _feel_ faster and smoother than it actually was, and if you didn't have an Amiga racked up side-by-side it felt exceptional.

If it would have been existed an Amiga GS this game could have competed against Mario and Sonic in an amazing way. Turrican, for me, the Amiga mascot by excellence.
@markpenrice62535 жыл бұрын
That's what the CDTV and CD32 were, mate - and as demonstrated, the games were just fine, definitely 16-bit console quality, but didn't really make much use of the CD hardware - not even a streaming soundtrack, which would have freed up the Paula to play lots of sound effects without clashes. They literally just slapped the floppy image on a CD (much like the data may have gone into a half or 1MB ROM cart), possibly did a slight tweak to make the background fade a bit smoother (as the CD32 was AGA based), and left it at that, with the only real upgrade being a near-HDD loading speed (even a 1x CDROM can load the entire contents of an Amiga disk in about 5 seconds, vs the minute or so the original machine took). It's just a shame they didn't make a cartridge based one earlier on, like what was originally planned... But the computer itself sort of filled that gap, is the thing. It wouldn't have taken enough off the price to remove the keyboard, floppy drive and maybe half of the ports and RAM to make a consolised version very much of a success - much of the cost of the thing was in the main chipset. Kinda how the ST was less than half the price at first, despite otherwise having much the same silicon and other specs (...now a consolised version of _that,_ especially the STe, could have actually been affordable, done a reasonable job if it got established before the other 16-bit consoles came along, and possibly saved Atari... but they were too hung up first on pushing the 7800, then spending forever and a day making the Jag...)
@TheSuperPlayer7075 жыл бұрын
@@markpenrice6253 I usually thought the possibility that Commodore would made an Amiga GS in the place of that garbage that were the 64 GS. Back then, in 1998-9 commodore planned its first attempt to get in on the videogame industry. There's two projects that were proposed: an Amiga GS (that would been used cartridge versions of the hard drive versions of its games, just as you mentioned) and an Commodore 64 GS. Commodore finally decided to make the 64 GS, because it was a cheaper project, but if they have chosen the Amiga GS in its place the history could have been way different. An hypothetical Amiga GS planned in 1998 would been released in 1990, and probably the First Turrican could have been its flagship title (in the same way that they planned it for de 64 GS), but the thing is this... If they launched the Amiga GS in the 1990 Christmas they could have been anticipated to Super Mario World and Sonic The Hedgehog, building a notable reputation so was actually happened in real life, and the console could have dominated the European markets absorbing an important market share. The Amiga GS might not ever leadership the American and Japanese markets, but I'm convinced that would competed against its rivals decently, and most probably it would have won in the European countries. The good situation, eventually might have crashed in the moment that they potentially planned something like the CDTV in response to the Sega's Mega CD (because in real life they created the CDTV based on the Mega CD) and the thing would ended with the eventual failure of the CD32 (created to be a competitor to the 3DO, like it was in real life), and commodore would had crashed like it happened in real life. ¿What's the point in all of this? Well, the thing is: if the things had happened in the same way I told, the history could have been different, and Turrican could have been remembered as a third important mascot of the early nineties, along Sonic and Mario, and in my opinion Turrican could have been a synonym of gaming, because in real life his games were so good that made school in level design and music. Sadly the actual history is different, and Turrican is poorly remembered, something unfair considering the impact that had in the nineties. If the history was the same that I told, the Turrican's impact in gaming would have been greater, and could have been better remember nowadays. Now, talking about your Atari ST mention, yes, I think the same as you, Atari would done its glorious comeback if they launched that planned Atari STGS instead of the XEGS. And the history could have been different, so as I mentioned before about commodore. The both companies didn't planned so well in that time, the both had in that time some of the worst CEO that a company could gotten, and this is a shame considering the potential of the projects from both companies. Nevertheless and also that I told with commodore, Atari neither would have maintained it's supremacy in the gaming business, because the competition in that era was very chaotic, and they could have taken bad decisions, and its final crash would happened anyway because of the monster... The PlayStation... Thanks for reading, I liked your comment so much, and I hope that this comment has also been to your liking. Good bye!

MS-DOS gaming lasted for about 15 years. PCs got hundreds of times faster over that period. First PC XT machines with CGA were utilized quite well, with support for CGA composite mode popular in games. Making them on par or superior to 8-bit computer of the 80's. PC AT with 286, EGA and Adlib that were supposed to compete with Amiga 500 and Atari ST just couldn't do it. Later 286 with higher clock and VGA cards were finally on par with Amiga 500 graphics hardware, but no one really knew how to use VGA hardware scrolling, split-screen etc. When programmers started to use VGA to it's full extent, 32-bit 386SX become the lowest supported CPU. Not faster than 286 with same clock, but fully 32-bit internally with groundbreaking for x86 flat memory model. Turrican 2, Super Frog, The Lost Vikings and few other games are such examples of how to get smooth animation on MS-DOS PCs. It wasn't long, when programmers realized that 486 + VLB graphics cards were so fast, that they no longer need to use VGA hardware tricks. They started to simply redraw whole screen every frame. At that time PCs were totally superior to any Amiga home computer (68030+ Amigas were able to keep with early 486, but they weren't meant for games). Amigas never really changed during their commercial life. ECS Amiga with 1 MB of RAM was the target since 1985-987 till it's end in 1995-1998. Amigas with AGA got very limited support, mostly quickly done ports of ECS games or bad ports from PC or 16-bit consoles. This is why Amiga games are very even in quality and MS-DOS games are ranging from really bad 8-bit-ish ports to PSX level graphics, with some definitive ports like Tomb Raider with 3DFX support, with best graphics at 640x480 resolution with 30+ framerate. MS-DOS just can't be threated as a single platform. It evolved from 8-bit era to something that was between N64 and Dreamcast. Then games started to run in Windows 9x only.

Personally I prefer Turrican 2 on the C64 slightly more than the Amiga version. The reason is that the levels seem to be designed with the area-wise scrolling (esp while jumping) in mind, which makes discovering secret areas or hidden objects a bit more rewarding. The other reason are the shmup-stages which look and feel more dynamic compared to the 16bit versions. Hard to tell which version is best at the end of the day. The lack of ingame tunes still is a big loss.

I guess how good the MS DOS version was depended very much on the hardware that you had? Was it a VGA only release, or could it be played on the CGA? And did it require a sound blaster, or could it be played without? It also seems to have been released up to four years after the Amiga debut, by which time the Pentium class processors had started to supercede the 486DX CPUs.

ZX has jumpy scrolling, but there is no way to do it differently if the game is not totally monochromatic, due to attribute clashes. If they put more colors on the screen, it has to jump by 8 pixels at the time. I would put CD32 version at least 5 slots lower, cause they didnt use the machine (AGA graphics) and have copied the OCS Amiga code instead.
@markpenrice62535 жыл бұрын
Looks like they made the sky colour fade a bit smoother, maybe using the same screenmode but with the expanded AGA palette? But other than that... As for the Spectrum one, I'm actually fairly impressed. Naturally it's not a patch on any of the others (even the C64), but given the hardware limitations, by god they seem to have tried hard to deliver as much of the experience as possible within that, to what would have still been an extremely large audience... there's lots of little details that they didn't strictly need to bother with, and aren't common to other Speccy platformers, but they're still included. I wonder even if we're seeing the 48k version, and there's a 128k one that includes a YM soundtrack (IE, borrowed from the ST), which would not only sound better but probably free up an extra couple of percent CPU (as it's no longer having to run the beeper) to make everything else run a bit smoother?

The ST version is actually the first one I ever played and I think it is a superb version. Differences onviopusly from the Amiga but it is a superb game. I owned an Amiga and played this game to death although I was never any good at it. As a former Spectrum owner, and one who still has a lot of love for it, I agree that the version for the Speccy is terrible. I wonder how much of it was down to the limitations of the computer and how much was down to the programmers themselves. I would like to think a better version could be done. The music was sublime; a soundtrack that you can listen to (as i have) without playing. And you are right about the Spectrum version - i am a fanboy for the speccy but what the hell were they thinking!!? Turrican 1 on the speccy was better then 2 - they actually made it worse (hmm Target Renegade and Renegade 3 comes to mind). And of course they should have provided a CD soundtrack (seeing as the actual soundsystem hadn't really been improved much, especially if you were using standard 15kHz video output). The A1200 might not have got the benefit of the latter unless you hooked up an external CDROM, but it could have had the enhanced graphics at least. Even though i had/have the CDTV i never had Turrican 2 for it. Nor did i know that a specific CDTV version existed but i don't agree with the choice to put it below the regular Amiga version just because you expected more. The CDTV was pretty much just an Amiga 500. It looks just like the Amiga version and looks and sounds better than the DOS version.
@moomah59292 жыл бұрын
Played it on my brother's C64 back in the day, together with Turrican 1. My thumb still hurts, because faster clicking = faster shooting! xD (Competition Pro joystick) Also got the DOS version (released quite late in 95) in my collection now. For Mega Drive I only had and still have Mega Turrican. One thing I never liked about the Turrican games is that dying didn't reset the timer so you could easily die twice in a row with the second death being time out. Turrican levels were nice and big but the time limit ruined the enjoyment of exploring them quite a bit.

They should have stuck with the first team and engine for the Spec version. If they'd have taken that as a basis, added some AY jingles and improved performance, they would have had a winner. Shame it wasn't to be.

I'm 100% agree with your toplist and I guess that the C64 version (already a masterpiece as it is) with some Sid miracle would have been surely the winner. The Ms Dos main sprite is horrible and so in all the other versions except the Commodore and ST ones in which Turrican looks cool as it was intended. That 10th place... even the Vic 20 could show something more decent.

Why did you expect more from the CDTV? It's just a stock amiga with a CD drive, it's the cd32 version that should be held to higher standards maybe, but there wasn't a CD32 version of this game. You shouldn't even have put the 'CDTV version' separately from the amiga, you got the exact same game at place 3 and 1.
@oldstylegaming3 жыл бұрын
Yeah thats right the cdtv is just an a500 with a cd drive but the fact it was on cd meant that they had way more room to enhance the game but didnt ...the just put the a500 game on a cd. Its marked lower as really this is a missed opportunity

The C64 and DOS versions are my favourite, the Amiga is perfection but they improved the graphics and speed on the PC, it's a pity that I just can't get 16-bit sound to work on DosBox to emulate it properly. But both 1 & 2 are such iconic excellence for the Amiga and C64 platforms.
@oldstylegaming5 жыл бұрын
I would gladly play them all except the terrible spectrum version
@elmariachi51335 жыл бұрын
The DOS version has more colors of course, probablz the typical 256, giving it a sligth technical advantage, but not siginificant. I never found 256 colors looking significantly better than 32. But I think this slight advantage is really lost because of an horrible art style I think. The DOS Turrican looks way too cartoonish for my taste. It's silly, especially tha bulky head.
@perge_music5 жыл бұрын

The MS-DOS port is really good, and I do like some quirks such as the bosses actually being much harder and more patternized but GOD the enemy A.I almost makes it bad, some enemies like the flies, underwater enemies and others really hinder it a lot and your hp drains much faster, and world 3's bosses are absolute garbage, and powerslide was made needlessly harder

@elmariachi51335 жыл бұрын
Well, that DOS version shoudl be one below th ST. Scrolling stutters, the scratching sound quality is hurting the ears and Turrican self looks like a teletubby. The CDTV didn't have much possibilities vs the Amiga, besides it could have had sound from CD of course.

I'm sorry but I totally disagree. The C64 version is by far the best. Yes, Amiga has more colors and Huelsbeck's music.. BUT.. -Manfred Trenz programmed it on the C64, and he declared it's the original version. -The Amiga port has less or no parallax -The Amiga port has less secret areas -The Amiga port is missing the water effect -You can't duck and shot 360 degrees in the Amiga port -Boss fights are a little different and generally inferior on the Amiga. -The Amiga port is missing that little amusing cutscene, where Turrican is starting the spaceship engine like it was a car. -The last level is missing the jetpack, replacing it with moving platforms: simply horrible. The last boss fight is everything but epic on the Amiga. Apart from these objective facts, I can personally say that I prefer to have no music during gameplay. As much as I love Huelsbeck's technical achievement on the score, I find that in the C64 version the overall sense of solitude and exploration is gratly emphasized. And I find that Markus Siebold's music in the intro and outro is simply the most epic music I've ever heard in a videogame, much more fitting with the theme than Huelsback's cheesy techno music. But that's just my opinion. I'm really tired to hear that the Amiga version is the best, it's a great game but nothing can surpass the original!
@turrican38393 жыл бұрын
While the Commodore 64 version is graphically and design-wise superior in most aspects, the Amiga does fall in a few aspects, but hey atleast this isn't like the goddamn MS-DOS port where they cranked up the enemy A.I by 11, (although the bosses in that port are actually quite good with the exception of every boss in world 3)
