The "If it's western, then why do I like it?" line is perfect. I remember one writer speaking of her parents "earnestly dancing the tango." As a duty, not because they enjoyed it.

I am a Greek living in Toronto. I have many Turk friends. They are as good as I, maybe better! We all agree this video is a masterpiece. Great music, terrific actors, fantastic idea. Turkish government has never banned folk music. What they have banned was the ottoman and arabic music. Some of the actions had to be taken in order to create a new nation from a collapsed empire. That empire was one of the largest empire in Human history, so you can't expect a smooth transition. Turkey also was the one of first country in the World to give full political rights to woman in that sense. So you can't judge those days with your current glasses. Some actions had to be taken.

the name of the initial folk song is "gesi baglari". it is over 100 couplets long and is thought to have been formed collectively by various folk singers over time. historically, it has been known and sung since around 1890's and is a very popular folk song

In 1936, Greek dictator Metaxas also banned the Greek folk songs "Rembetika" for the same reasons. Every ban on people is unnatural. People should be free to live their lives as they want to, in every way. A big salute to my Turkish brothers on the other side of the Aegean....

thikramone, the song you are referring to şs the last song on the clip. the turkish version is called "kalenin bedenleri" and it's greek version is also known as "ciftetelli turkiko" (ni-na-nai). the one i was referring to was the first pieces they were playing. there are many folk songs of anatolia which were sung in different languages by the different ethnic groups sharing the land and some are popular in all their different versions.
