There's actually a big reason why Ray in the cartoon is only known as Ray AND why he looks so different. Originally the episode was going to have Ray Fillet, but Ryan Brown, the owner of Ray Fillet, whom was very attached to the character, didn't like the script of Rebel without a Fin (particularly Ray being a villain) and didn't allow the cartoon to use Ray Fillet. Thus Ray Fillet was redesigned for the cartoon and lost the "Fillet" part of his name. Its interesting to note that in Rebel without a fin, Ray was unusually reluctant for an evil minion in the 1987 cartoon, some speculate this was a failed attempt at compromise by taking the edge off of Ray's villainy? It would've been nice to see the regular Ray design in the cartoon, I think. Your thoughts. Also Triceraton and Ray appeared in the Sega Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters, whilst Wingnut appeared in the SNES version.
@brendansrambles94642 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting, and makes a lot more sense. He was definitely more reluctant and "not into" the evil plan than most villains from it who were often just as evil as evil can be. I never quite got why every single character, hero or villain, in the cartoon had to be introduced as a potential villain first. I understand it makes for a good chance for the turtles to firsthand see how formidable the character is, but I think they overdid it. Shame we never got the real Ray Filet, but good on his creator for protecting his character.

His huge axe was so unique. He was one of my favorites, too. I actually called him "Panda La", for some reason? as I could not read well when I got him and something was lost in translation from my parents. In my battles, he was always one of the strongest ones and his axe could knock down multiple enemies in a single blow. For an added wrinkle, he could throw the axe like a tomahawk. With most of these figures, I didn't know the backstory/attributes and just made my own.

Yes! This wave was the golden age of that line! It had so many of my all-time favorites: Ray Fillet, Wingnut, Mondo Gecko, Mutagen Man, Muck Man, Triceraton, Pizza Face, and my favorite of the entire line, Slash! I was the other way around--a total sucker for the "evil twin" gimmick! Ever since Venom, it would get me every time. :) The only thing I didn't like about Slash is how Playmates outright lied about how big he was going to be--I remember the back of the card showed him scaled twice as big as the turtles, then when the figure came out he was actually shorter! That would have been the only way to improve on him. When Super7 [finally] gets around to Slash, I'm betting they'll right that wrong!
@brendansrambles94643 жыл бұрын
I agree, I would love a bigger Slash. I noticed most of the figures who were meant to be wide and hulking, big guys often had smaller figures, like Slash, Groundchuck and Leatherhead. I do hope Super 7 pluses them, and their Leatherhead sneak peaks seem like a good indication they will.

I only ever had one TMNT figure; the original Michaelangelo. And my brothers had Leonardo and Donatello. I guess that, to us, they were seen as similar to Masters Of The Universe, in that we only had a few. The '80s had so many new toylines to choose from, we tried a lot of them, but only collected a few. Transformers and G.I.Joe were the big two, but we had a few examples of Sky Commanders, Centurions, Cops 'n' Crooks, Dino Riders, M.A.S.K.. I guess longevity was a factor. Most of those franchises lasted from 1 to 4 years, but Joes and Transformers outlasted my childhood.
@brendansrambles9464Ай бұрын
I had some Joes, but for me the big two were Turtles and Masters, especially Turtles. Always cool to hear who had what, though, as there were so many to collect, everyone has different stories. I had a point where I was very into Dino Riders too!

how possible is it that playmates will realease a retro rotocast pack of some of these figures like they did with the sewer lair and mutant module pack
@brendansrambles94642 жыл бұрын
I'd say it's somewhat likely now, honestly. They have been rereleasing a lot of the vintage toyline recently, like the party wagon and movie turtles (though the Shredder and Splinter in that line were not the originals) and with Super 7 and Neca making characters like Muckman and Wingnut big names in collecting again, they might see a profit in doing so.
@bigvis4972 жыл бұрын
Never understood cartoon Wingnut, especially since they barely changed his design. The superhero costume made no sense, neither did the alien origin. It would have been so easy to just say he's a mutated bat. Does anybody know the story behind this?
@brendansrambles94642 жыл бұрын
I always thought the same thing. It never made sense. My only guess would be the cartoon writers had their scripts ready, but didn't have an episode with Wingnut and Screwloose, and Playmates told them they had to, so they just reworked some alien invader script they had for the season at the last minute. That's the best I can come up with.
